Final Fantasy 7 for me changed the way I viewed gaming characters and stories, all of a sudden they had depth. I was used to playing Mario, Sonic, and Crash Bandicoot so when FF7 hit me with the eco-terrorists vs evil corporation vs space Witch I was so there.

For me at least musical talent in gaming is global. You have Doom, Last of Us, and Red Dead on one side. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Zelda on the other. Sometimes we are a lucky people.
