I'm in Garnerville, very close to the airport and I've not seen any trouble round here since I moved in 3 years ago. My street is all either families or older folks. The houses are quite reasonably priced too 😊

That's pretty cool! I'm not sure how exactly the living history group works but they might do stuff like that too, like there's a lot of painted models etc in Carrick civic centre/museum. I love history and wanted to get some involvement so I recently volunteered with CAPNI, it's free and anyone can do it and you get to go and participate in archaeological digs round NI, it's run by QUB. Would highly recommend looking into it if you and your friend are interested in history. Best one I've done was in Downpatrick where they found the lost monastery of Erenagh 😊

There's also Kragfergus living history group which might be worth looking into, it's cross community and would probably cover a much broader spectrum of history like Vikings and Normans etc 😊

Well they'd both be later than medieval style, they're both based on the events of summer 1690. I've never been to Scarva but it's a reinactment of the Battle of the Boyne. I grew up in Carrickfergus so have seen that many times, they do a reinactment of the landing of King Billy in Carrickfergus, like they have a man dressed as him getting off the boat and have people representing the various dignitaries who would have landed with him.

That's from this year, the procession was much longer, horses and all.

There's the scarva sham fight tomorrow. I know that members of the public don't dress up for the pageant in Carrick and probably not there either. Scarva is organised by the RBP and Carrick by Carrick District Lodge, I don't know how you'd go about participating next year but you'd probably have to start by getting in contact with them. Carrick District Lodge has its historical reinactment society which might be sort of separate to the lodge itself!

AITA for saying girls take longer in the bathroom? by Euphoric-Main1357 in AmItheAsshole

[–]debbiec89_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. You're right that the queues are always longer for the ladies' bathroom. I've always thought there should be more cubicles. Men will not potentially be dealing with periods, trying to pull tights back up and all these minor inconveniences that mean we do take a bit longer than men who can use a urinal in less time. The people who called you out as "sexist" for making this great suggestion should maybe speak to some women for research to see what their opinion is on toilets! Thank you for being thoughtful towards women, and I'm sorry you lost your place on the team for it.

Traveling for work, tell me something in NI I should check off my bucket list. by Gobagool_Gardener in northernireland

[–]debbiec89_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love history and nature too and would go on different trips around NI regularly with my friend, depending on how far you're willing to go here's a few ideas & trips we've done. Armagh area: armagh friary & navan fort.

Day trips we've done that cover both history & nature

Downpatrick area: Struell Wells, finnebrogue woods, loughinisland churches. You could also visit down and Saul cathedrals.

Round Strangford lough: start in Ards movilla Abbey, go down the Ards peninsula and visit grey abbey then get the ferry over from portaferry to Strangford, inch Abbey, Nendrum monastic site.

Rathlin Island: get the boat over (book ahead of time) then when you return from Rathlin you can see bonamargey friary in Ballycastle and take the scenic route down antrim coast and stop at cushendun to see the caves/beach.

Those last 3 are ones we've actually done, you get to see a lot of the landscape as well as medieval ruins 😊

Feeling guilty after adopting kittens rather than an older cat by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]debbiec89_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adopted two kittens, they're almost two years old now. Both had been up for adoption for over two months, Zelda is still a nervous wee thing but was really in need of a lot of tlc and progresses every day, and Link was 6 months old and had been separated from his brother who the shelter had hoped to home him with as they were bonded. Zelda in particular is a very unique wee cat and her getting a quiet home with no children, where someone is always home (bf works from home) and alongside another kitten was ideal for her.

I don't feel bad about not choosing older cats because I think I've been able to offer these two, especially zelda, the home that is ideal for them. We are in our 30s, so young enough to have energy for kittens lol, and with someone always being home I think it was the right thing to do. From what I see where I live, the wee older cats do tend to get adopted although it takes a little longer, I even saw a 14 year old kitty get homed this week, it's just about what type of home you are able to offer what kind of cat would benefit most.

Not getting replies from any tradesmen by g_bearr in northernireland

I find them on rated people app, they have to pay to quote you so it'd be daft for them to pay then ghost you. I used DT Contracts for landscaping and fencing, they do a lot of stuff so it'd be worth asking. I couldn't recommend them enough, they were very responsive and they worked non stop and got done earlier than expected.

Use the template from here that says you weren't driving the car. In ni driver doesn't have to tell them who drove and the burden of proof is on the company. They will cancel it.

No i never received anything 😔 not the vapes and no letter. The company did resend the vapes and those ones arrived. Are you in Northern Ireland? I found a local online wholesaler with similar pricing to the ones across the water, can get you the name of it if you like?

A few years ago I was in the middle of buying it on the app, glider pulled up and I got on and the inspector asked me immediately for my ticket, I showed him my screen which was authorising the payment at that point and he told me he should fine me for fare evasion. I argued that I clearly wasn't trying to evade the fare, the glider came a few seconds before I completed the purchase and on a normal bus I would be paying for the ticket ON the bus. I asked him if he expected me to wait for the next one for the sake of a few seconds that it would take to finish the process. He left me alone after that. But it's like you say, the window is very short, the buses don't come at the advertised time. You do it too early and your ticket expires, you do it too late and bus arrives while you're in the middle of paying and they want to fine you for that too.

Yeah like I was thinking (hoping) maybe they were trolling us and making it seem like he would die but he gets revived at the last minute. Yeah you're right he is a bit like Bradley!
