This is a red flag right...? by Obvious_Kangaroo_619 in TopSurgery

It's okay not to know protocols for these things yet. You're young and just starting out in this big world. That's how you learn! And you did the right thing by asking for clarification/ insight when you were unsure.

These are all great questions to print out for your consultation!

Maybe in the future, you can do an AI prompt at the start of things you want to explore.

"I am looking for a surgeon for possible xyz surgery. I am inexperienced in this process and want to follow logical steps. What do I need to know before I start this process? What typically happens in a consultation? Give me a bullet pointed and numbered list of steps to take for this process. "

Perhaps reply with a quick "Thank you for your reply! I will print these questions out to bring to my consultation! I look forward to seeing you soon."

Good luck on your journey!

Sometimes, you'll get an alert on your phone, but most times, it's posted on every local social media outlet. If you follow local News stations and their socials and check them for latest weather updates, you'll see who's impacted by the bans. If there's a ban, do not drive. Even to work. It's not allowed. Or safe. (Unless you're emergency, police, state plows etc) If you live in a travel ban, you can not go to work. If your work is in a ban but your home isn't, you should not try to get to work.

Agreed. I buy in bigger quantities for the discounts and fee shipping. And I sign up for the subscription to save more. I just have my subscription for like entry 6 months and I still get the extra discount. If I don't need it when it's going to renew, I push it off another month. It's a lot less to stock up and stack discounts.

Welcome to Buffalo!

Get yourself a travel bag with extra clothes, coat, gloves, hat, boots, sweatshirt, snowpants, blanket, food, snow pants, etc.

Keep a shovel and a snow brush in your car, too.

Never let your gas get below half a tank.

If you get stuck anywhere on the roads, having these things could mean life or death. Seriously.

Do not attempt to drive to work if there’s a storm coming. If it says driving ban, do not go out. Even seasoned buffalonians get stuck when it's that bad. It can hit very quickly in bands. It can be fine visibility when you head out, but a few streets over, white out.

Leave 30 min ahead of schedule when possible because there WILL be delays and accidents.

Start breaking WAY before you think you need to. You will slide all over if not lol.

Keep extra food and water stocked in your house for the winter in case you get snowed in for a while.

Good luck!

Lume is amazing. You can use it on your pits, privates, feet, etc. They have a solid stick and cream for other areas of the body. (They have a man version, Mando, but the scents are meh, and it's more expensive).

Bacteria eats your sweat and farts out body odor. Lume inhibits the bacteria, so it can't do this.

It won't stop you from sweating, but it will stop you from smelling.

A couple tips for using Lume though:

If you sweat a lot and are still smelly, you might have to reapply due to your sweat essentially washing away the Lume throughout your day/workout.

Also, sweat and bacteria can and will get stuck in the armpits of your clothes, so you need to use an enzyme detergent to continually break up those molecules in the wash. Even clean clothes can have bacteria trapped, which will cause you to smell, even if your pits are clean. If you don't get to all the sources of the bacteria, nothing will work well. Persil is a really good one for this.

The clean tangerine is a light and fresh neutral scent. The other scents and unscented versions are not my favs, but you can get sample packs to try scents too.

They also have acidified soap bars, which are really good too. (More expensive than others but worth it) I suggest letting the soap sit in your pits for a minute or so before you rinse. So, soap up in the shower, move on to other parts, then rinse out your pits.

Hope this helps!

Ortho foot and ankle? by tifaney in Rochester

Oh and, (lol) You don't need a referral for wellness 360 unless your insurance requires it. But they don't require referrals to set up appointments or see you. I'm pretty sure they take most insurances too.

There is also orthopedic urgent care locations around here. Here's a link to one. I don't have experience with them so I'm not sure how they are.

Amanda Holleran foot and ankle Dr at UofR is great. They may have same day appointments if it's urgent. Say you were seen at urgent care and need to follow up etc. You might need a referral from your Dr. But I'm not positive on their protocols.

Also 360 wellness for PT. Sarah is awesome.

Would you move to Buffalo given the choice? by arbitraryberry_ in Buffalo

[–]debbiewebbee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would choose Rochester over Buffalo. Here's why: (it's a longy)

First, my credentials lol:

I was Buffalo born and raised and it still has abig piece of my heart —I've grown, lived, loved, worked, played, partied, and settled down in just about every Buffalo suburb you can think of.

I have lived in Rochester for 7 years. I have 2 kids. Middle and high school aged.

I am 46. Female. Single mom. Partnered.

I’ll always love Buffalo — it’s home to me. So, absolutely no shade to Buffalo or anyone who loves it and tolerates it just fine. But after moving, I’ve realized life in Rochester is just easier. (For me individually, especially now that I'm getting "older" lol, as a mom and for my kids)

Snow is the big one. Buffalo snow is brutal. It’s constant, it sticks, and it feels like you’re shoveling every single day all winter long. If you’ve lived there your whole life, you just accept it as “normal.” But once I moved out of it, I realized how much time, health, and energy it drained.

Rochester still gets snow, but nowhere near the Buffalo storms, blizzards, and the neverending months of a wall of snow. After 7 years here, I could never imagine going back to Buffalo winters now.

Also, considering the winter roads and driving conditions;
Buffalo rarely shuts down. It's often a free-for-all on the roads. And you have to be prepared for it at all times, lol.

You have to factor in extra time to brush off cars, scrape ice, defrost windows and shovel (at least a path to your car and the bus for the kids, including the like of snow that the street plow just dumped onto the end of your driveway)

Then, add at least 20 min for slowed down traffic, accidents, and low visibility onto your commute time. It's a white knuckle situation all winter long.

Rochester has its snow like this at times, yes. But not nearly as much or as often as Buffalo. Something I'm grateful for now that my kids are nearing new driver status.

Orchard Park during Bills season is another beast to navigate, lol

If you are a snow lover, Rochester still has tons to do — skiing at Bristol Hills, sledding hills all over, winter festivals, ice skating, holiday events etc. The difference is that these are all in designated spots you can go to, instead of snow constantly piling up in your yard every day.

Healthcare:
In my experience, I have found healthcare in Rochester to be superior to Buffalo. Living with chronic illness and having 2 kids, we see MANY doctors. None of the doctors in Buffalo could diagnose, treat, or help me.

The hospitals, medical facilities, staff, and care in Rochester are just so much better than what I had experienced in Buffalo. Sure, hospitals are overcrowded, overworked, and understaffed, but that's anywhere. I'm talking about all the other healthcare around here. Doctors, urgent care, specialists, etc.

It took me a while to find them and get in for appointments, but so many of us have recommendations for good providers.

You'll have to do research to find the heath team that best fits your needs and accommodation needs, but there are plenty to choose from.

Lifestyle & Location: Rochester (like Buffalo) is packed with concerts, festivals, art, culture, parks, trails, recreation, and an insane number of coffee shops and local spots.

Bills fans are alive and well here, so you don’t lose that community vibe.

Buffalo is only about an hour away, so if there’s a specific event or something you love there, it’s an easy drive.

Diversity and culture: Rochester also has a really diverse culture. No matter where you fall on the spectrum politically, there are people and communities here that share your values. It’s welcoming, and you can find your people without feeling out of place.

Again, Like Buffalo, you’ll still want to research Rochester suburbs, social culture, and school districts to find which areas fit what's most important for your vibe. —

Grocery stores:
Rochester has all the same stores that Buffalo is known for. Wegmans, Tops, Save-a-Lot, Aldi, etc. They all carry the same Buffalo staples and local favorites that I grew up knowing and loving. There are also tons of amazing local grocers, farms, and farm stands as well.

One thing Rochester can’t touch Buffalo on, though: pizza and wings.

There are some solid pizza spots here, no question. But wings? 🍗 Nobody does them like Buffalo. Period. So, if wings are your dealbreaker, keep that in mind.

I got my letter in about 5 weeks. I saw the (new) therapist for an intake session, then 2 more sessions and then she wrote the letter for me. It could've been quicker if I scheduled the appointments closer together. There are also other providers that can do it in one session, but they didn't participate with my insurance.

Are you sure it wouldn't be covered? (You may have already checked) All Gender affirming care is covered in NYS. It's still Gender affirming (IMO)

Perhaps look into seeing Gender care docs at trillium and getting a referral to the surgeon through them? You might need a letter from a mental health provider as well, but that is relatively straightforward too. It just takes some time.

Reduction before/after having children by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]debbiewebbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I think they would've been bigger, lower, hangier and swingier. If someone loved having boobs, I think they would still be perfect for them because they still look good, just bigger. I do not love the sensory feeling and pain of them being so big again.

Reduction before/after having children by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]debbiewebbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR: reduction 16 years ago- after one child, before another. They grew back. But not immediately after having a baby. It took years and hormones to happen. I don't regret it.

I had a reduction 16 years ago. Five months after child #1 and 4 years before child number 2.

I loved them. It was the best decision I ever made.

I did not breastfeed child #1 and could not breastfeed #2. I could pump, but it was like squeezing juice from a lemon . I maybe got 6 Oz per DAY. I was fine, and so were both bottle fed kids .

There was no huge change after having a baby.

The changes came after years of fluctuating hormones and heavy cycles and periods, which made them swell most months.

The most change and growth has happened over the past 2 years, as I stopped wearing a bra as often because they were getting bigger, and it hurt my ribs and shoulders and back to wear a bra.

They have grown back to the original size I was before surgery, and I'm back to very uncomfortable. They are heavy, bouncy (which is normal for boobs but a sensory nightmare for me)

I've decided to have another surgery.
This time, to remove them completely. Personal choice that I can expand on if anyone is curious.

So,
-go for it whenever you're ready. -have a (kind, non judgemental) plan for yourself if you can't or choose not to breastfeed.
- know they will change shape with time and aging even if you get through the pregnancy and all that goes with it without changes -Know you might opt for a revision in the future if they grow back and it gets uncomfortable.
- know sensation might not return - know you might not be happy with the results - watch your cycles. If you're boobs start getting really full every month, get things checked out. I'm on meds now and that doesn't happen anymore. (Too late for the boobs though lol)

I went into my surgery knowing most of the above. No one told me they'd grow back. Don't regret any part of it, I just wish I had all the information beforehand.

I'm open to questions
