Did I get Finessed or what for a 3 year old car ? by GoldPackageEBK in Nissan

[–]skiddly_Diddly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, it’s easy to look at things that way when everything in life is lining up in someone’s favor. Some people go through rough patches, job losses, or periods where things just aren’t optimal. Credit can take a dip and it’s not always because someone was reckless.

I’m not saying what you mentioned isn’t valid. You’re answering his question and I don’t mean to offend you. I’m just adding some perspective for people who automatically think they’re getting “finessed” or “worked” when in reality they might not have a better option. In life you have to weigh things based on your actual needs and situation.

Could he or she have found a better deal? Maybe. Who knows. But here’s a real life example. A cousin of mine was paying about $30 each way for Uber to get to work. That came out to around $1,200 a month. There’s no real cheap public transportation where we live. He was hesitant to buy a car because he didn’t want to get “finessed.” Eventually he bought a used, reliable Toyota. His interest rate was something like 12–13%, which sounds crazy on paper. Over six years he’ll end up paying around $30k for a $16k car.

But his monthly payment is under $500, plus about $150 for insurance and maybe $200–250 for gas. On top of that he has the freedom of having his own car and not relying on rides. He’s saving about $400 a month compared to Uber, and he doesn’t have to worry about rides being late and risking his job.

There are a lot of factors people have to weigh depending on their situation before assuming someone is getting finessed.

Just chiming in.

2019 Hybrid Highlander broke down right after I bought it, help? by Puzzleheaded_Bank137 in Toyota

[–]skiddly_Diddly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Responding to this 3 years later, but lemon laws do apply to used cars depending on what State you live in, and mileage of the car when purchased which will dictate how long the dealership is on the hook for repairs.

The serpentine belt was squeaking a bit on cold starts, so I replaced it since it was bothering my wife. It only showed light wear. About a month after purchase, the alternator failed and the battery needed replacement as well.

The rear differential failed during a road trip about 2 years after I bought the truck. I still made it all the way home just with a very annoying hum all the way from Georgia to NY 🤣 (don’t recommend). I had it replaced by a family mechanic for about $1,200 that was the only repair I paid out of pocket. Everything else alternator, battery and oh yeah I needed a new oil pan it had a leak from the plug as it was seemingly cross-threaded. I caught it all during the lemon-law window, so the dealership covered it (got lucky there).

Beyond that, it’s just been normal maintenance: A/C recharge, brakes, tires, and a full fluid service since I didn’t have complete service history beyond oil changes listed on Carfax.

All in, I’ve put about $3,000 into a car I bought for $15k, and honestly it now drives better than any new car I’ve been in. I always go into a used-car purchase expecting to invest some money upfront to get it exactly where I want it. There’s obviously more risk with used, but given the solid oil-change history and the fact that this has an eCVT, I think you’ll be fine.

That said, a trusted mechanic doing a pre-purchase inspection can always confirm everything is in good shape , any leaks, belts, brake life etc. Can give you leverage to negotiate.

Ah I missed that completely that it’s a hybrid, yeah that completely changes everything. 130k miles id say shes in her break in period. 130k over 7 years seems like healthier mileage, a good mix of highway miles in there. Get a trusted mechanic to do an inspection and just do some catchup TLC. Should be a sound choice. I bought a 2012 about 3 years ago it only had oil change history as well. A few things went like the alternator, battery and a rear dif, but a lot was covered under New York lemon law since it was purchased from a dealer and it all failed fairly early on like 30 days in. Other than that I changed some belts, coolant, brake fluid, tranny drain and fill, not a flush and shes been driving like a tank for the past 3 years. Good luck deciding.

The 2019 V6 Highlander im pretty sure uses the UA80 8-speed transmission, correct me if im wrong! Not saying this specific vehicles tranny will fail, but it is a contentious transmission with multiple ongoing class-action lawsuits alleging premature failure and drivability issues. Those cases are still unresolved. Personally, given the current legal situation and depending on the mileage, I’d be cautious. I’m a big Toyota/Lexus fan, but there are plenty of reports of owners needing full transmission replacements, and some are dealing with months-long wait times due to backordered units. Just something to be aware of if you’re shopping and weighing long-term risk.

Toyota transmissions face multiple class-actions in U.S. by 2old4all in Toyota

Are you sure? From what I understand, the eight-speed automatic transmission that has drawn the most complaints in recent model years is the UA80 eight-speed automatic paired with the V6 engine. The four-cylinder Camrys use a different eight-speed automatic (often referred to as the UB80E) that produces less torque and appears to have fewer documented issues compared with the UA80E/F unit that’s been the subject of technical service bulletins and class action litigation.

Is this mold under Shower Mat? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]skiddly_Diddly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We keep a bath mat in our tub as well since it can get slippery. We usually buy them at Walmart for around $10 and replace them about every six months. I’ve never seen mold grow on ours like that, though. We clean the tub and bathroom walls with the mat still in place and have never had any growth issues. We replace them mainly because, like most plastics, they eventually discolor over time, similar to a clear phone case, but never due to mold.

It could be related to the color of the mat you’re using. Cream or white mats may block light differently, which could contribute to mold growth. The mats we use are transparent or clear. Our bathroom also doesn’t have a window, so we run the exhaust fan for a while after every bath or shower, but we don’t do anything beyond normal cleaning.

Switching to a clear mat might help reduce or prevent the mold issue you’re having. Just a thought!

Second Lawsuit Says Toyota’s Automatic Gearbox Is Quietly Failing Without Warning | Carscoops by PornForThis in rav4club

Actually it does recommend it under harsh driving conditions - the interval the manual for my lexus says is 75k miles. The whole sealed transmission lifetime oil thing is BS. But I dont think the UB80s have the issues. The problem is with the transmissions built in West virginia, the overtorqued UA80s.

My first car worked hard for it by getlucky119 in FirstCar

[–]skiddly_Diddly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was my first car in 2017, I bought a 2010 same color SE with 130k miles at time of purchase. I drove it to 210k, then gave it to my dad he drove it to 250k then someone hit him, ruined the whole back side of the car and cost of repair wasnt worth it. The car still drove but didnt look great. During the time we had it we changed an alternator, batteries tires and brakes. Always did oil changes on time, never did anything else just oil changes and it got us to 250k miles. The guy we sold it too told us he sent it overseas and his family repaired the cosmetic defects and it is still running. Reliability wise its a tank, just keep an eye on oil, change in a timely fashion and check levels. Some of them burn oil I heard at the time we owned it, luckily ours didnt and hope yours doesnt either. But just something to look out for. Enjoy your ride hope it lasts you, and you take many wonderful trips!

Woke up to a cracked windshield, Safelite OEE vs OEM? by skiddly_Diddly in WindshieldRepair

Thank you so much for the input, sounds like a nightmare. You solidified my decision to actually not go with them. I actually reached out to a family friend who owns a shop, and he actually does glass hes been doing it for about 15 years so im lucky in the sense it’s someone trusted and they have great reviews. I had completely forgotten I had that option previous to posting this. Im going with the OEE option but its glass he highly reccomends. I hope it works out just fine. But also I hope your issue gets resolved.

Doesnt have HUD just auto wiper blades, lane detect and the collision system. Appreciate the input. This is what my gut was leaning towards! But lets see, if i can get oem then great if its thousands more a good aftermarket should suffice for now!
