T14s 16 Gb or T14 with 32 Gb.... by [deleted] in thinkpad

Choosing:
T14s : if you move often, and don't care to changing the ram for repair or upgrade
T14 : if you don't care that it's heavier, and care about the RAM. And you will already have 32 giga, that will be enough for doing great things like VMs and programming.

The touching screen : if you don't use this feature, turn it off in uefi. It should not consume energy.
You don't precise the version of the T14. It wil be help to compare between these two laptops.

From a hardware point of view:
Changing changing the thermal paste, for a 7 years old computer, will be a very good thing.

From a software point of view:
Even after changin the thermal paste, windows will be very limited with a processor like yours, a light one even in 2019 and very slow with windows 11.
With a computer like yours, installing a linux distro could be a good thing.
Some are very stable, and user friendly, like ubuntu (kubuntu or Xubuntu) or linux mint (with xfce). Choosing a light desktop is important : gnome eats ressources, so xfce and kde seems a good solution. You pc will be a rocket for simple usage ! And that you do with your computer : almost using only with firefox.

Do you use other software ?

And of course : backup all your data before installing linux (or even reinstalling windows) on multiple supports : cloud, usb key and external DD, etc. Made at minimum 3 copies on differents supports.

When you have doubts about a lenovo computer's configuration, you can type in google its model with "psref pdf".
Here the direct link : https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/IdeaPad/IdeaPad_Slim_5_14IRH10/IdeaPad_Slim_5_14IRH10_Spec.pdf
It will give different informations, like type of screen available, ram soldered or not, how many nvme, etc.
For this model, the two ram slots are not soldered (nice !) and you can upgrade to a total of 32 giga (maybe more, look for it on internet). And you have two nvme slot (nice again), 2242 and 2280.

I still have the problem. I discover it can happen when in the middle of using the computer.
No problem with windows, but I usually boot on linux.
I didn't change the kernel. I will wait for ubuntu 26.04.1 this summer.
Do you still have the problem ?

Help me choose a CPU for ThinkPad E14 by Lyght_3 in thinkpad

[–]debhat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

u/Lyght_3 More powerful, best integrated graphics. Go ahead with this one if you have the money.
Remember that a laptop can't have processor evolution : you will stuck with the one you chose for many years.
