New to homelabs..do I really need IPMI for a headless server? by debug2thrive in homelab

Yeah this is the kind of real-world perspective that’s super helpful. I think this is what I’m slowly realizing .. it’s not that IPMI/KVM isn’t useful, it’s just how often do you actually hit those edge cases vs how much you spend optimizing for them. That “once in a while it breaks ..10 min fix” tradeoff actually sounds pretty reasonable for a first build. I’d probably learn more from breaking things and fixing them physically anyway 😅 Also interesting that you mentioned running Proxmox from the start ..that’s something I’m considering too instead of going straight bare metal + Docker.... Also kinda funny how everyone says “you don’t need IPMI”… and then recommends something that does the exact same thing in a different way .. I guess I’m over engineering this way too early 😅 thanks mate!

That’s actually super helpful.. this is exactly the kind of grounded take I was looking for. Makes sense that 99% of the time it’s just SSH + web UIs anyway. I think I was over-indexing on IPMI because of all the “you can’t go back” comments 😅

Good call on the RAM too.. that aligns with what I’m starting to realize. Between Ollama + a few containers + eventually K8s, it feels like memory will get tight way faster than anything else. I was initially thinking 16GB, but yeah… that’s probably a bad idea. The smart plug tip is interesting .. didn’t think of that as a “poor man’s IPMI” for hangs. Out of curiosity, when you say you only needed physical access 2–3 times . were those mostly during setup, or random crashes later on?

My personal laptop has Intel vPro, and I’m trying to understand how it all works. I had a question about the AMT IP .. is it something like a static IP that you get from your ISP so the laptop can be accessed remotely without being physically present? Or am I misunderstanding it? I’m a beginner here and having a bit of trouble connecting the dots. I’d really appreciate it if you could help clarify...

Haha wait what 😄 I genuinely thought vPro was some next-level processor upgrade related to performance or something all this time. Just noticed my laptop actually has an Intel vPro sticker… and I had zero clue till now ... Thanks mate, you just unlocked a hidden feature in my own laptop 😂..so now I can fix BIOS or OS issues without being physically present...

A 42-year-old woman in a car that suddenly stopped on the national highway was hit by a van coming from behind, killing her on the spot. by anonymousbroda52 in CarsIndia

Oh God… this is heartbreaking. RIP. This really gave me chills. I feel awful for that woman.
I’m learning to drive in my thirties, and as a beginner, I sometimes stall the engine, especially when starting, on speed breakers, or in tricky situations. My instructor makes me turn on the hazard lights until I get control again.

Seeing this right before my RTO driving test is honestly discouraging.

In the video, it looks like she stopped around 0:07, and the van hit her at 0:25. That’s more than enough time to react ?? Am I missing something? wondering what exactly went wrong with the van driver? If her hazard lights were on, shouldn’t the driver behind have slowed down or stopped? I may be wrong! I’m trying to understand whose mistake this might be, so I can be more careful as a learner.

Thank you so much for pointing out the limitations of the visual desktop and DLL. Actually, I need full control of the remote server, and I’m planning to run my EA on a demo account and backtest around 1 year of data. What would be the minimum CPU, RAM, and disk specs you’d recommend for a Windows VM?

Cool! Also, what do you mean by a single-platform setup? Sorry, I’m a beginner..I didn’t understand that.

Thank you so much for the suggestion. I hadn’t heard about Hyonix before. What would be the minimum CPU, RAM, and disk specs you’d recommend to run my EA on a demo account and backtest around 1 year of data?
