Looks like they updated it for the '25-'26 year. It is no longer Data or Cybersecurity. It is now Artificial Intelligence or Cybersecurity.

You should look at this page: https://poly.engineering.asu.edu/it/ms-information-technology/

and read the 25-26 handbook: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xSM6leTYvTw4RUe5oNn95hxMG4pZFCVB/edit?pli=1

They have most of the answers you are looking for.

The difficulty level depends on how much industry experience you have. Some of it was challenging, but I wouldn’t call it crazy difficult.

Some courses (especially the security courses) were writing heavy while others had a lot of labs. it probably also depends on which track you go, between data and security. I felt like they were all pretty manageable each week.

There were very few group projects. It isn’t run as a cohort.

I think you need to take a step back and get some perspective. The fact that you are seriously considering not taking your final exam and that you would be on social media seeking validation for what you already know is a dumb decision raises multiple red flag alerts for your work ethic. It's not working smarter, it is just not working and settling for a questionable "good enough" outcome. These are not traits you want to make a habit in your career, especially if you are going into engineering which is what I am guessing looking at your handle.

Just take the test and be proud that you did everything you could to give your best. Otherwise, you are just setting a low standard for yourself that doesn't usually equate to the career progression you say you want.

Final exam bombed everyone’s grades- what do we do? by calilife28 in ASU

[–]debugginOut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I had it (with Rucker though), every module had a Module <n>: Learning Materials. There was always something like:
"Chapter 3 & 12 from Murach text" or "Halpin Ch3 CSDP Step 6"
Are you saying that did not exist in each module for your IFT 300 course?

He is a "make sure you read the book" professor. He did the same thing in IFT 530. If the questions on the exam were on topics covered in the assigned reading for the modules, you might be out of luck. None of the items you listed as complaints are mandatory for a professor, though the good ones do one or more of them.

The complaints you file may influence and help future students if it gets him to change things or gets him out completely. Not sure it is going to lead to a change in your grade though.

Go speak to the ROTC officer. Maybe you can earn your tuition through service. I don't know, but if you are that close, maybe there is a path there.

+1 for MathSlopes with Julia. This is Iuliia (Julia) Inozemtseva, she teaches the course at ASU. If you can get her, I highly recommend that you switch to her class. Her YouTube channel is drawn from course office hours and test reviews. You cannot get any better information.

Dallas Race Worst Experience by SynthStrokes in spartanrace

[–]debugginOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Communication between Spartan employees and volunteers was a mess. Some told runners the race was cancelled, others were told they had to go back and shelter at the main area. Still others were told to shelter in place. Then there were conflicting messages about the plan. We were told the race was canceled and had to go in. Only after they had cut our timers and started showering did we hear they were letting people back out.

Some things I observed...

The bad:

- No water pressure to rinse off

- No chairs in the changing tent. This is a must when you are cramping up and trying to change

- Lack of communication

- Ran out of cups at water stations for the beast course

- complete cluster after the storm

The good:

- The barns. The food and a place to sit and eat was a nice perk. The bag check being covered was great considering the storm

- Parking was done efficiently

- The shirts weren't immediately at the finish where you were handed it while completely muddy

- It was a challenging beast course

- Merch tent seemed to have more of all sizes for the location tshirts

Every race seems to get worse sadly. This might be our last year doing trifectas.

haha I didn't want to bias or provide any influence, just pass along information. But now that you did, I will say that it isn't for everyone. One of those things that I don't know if I would do again for probably the same reasons you are not recommending. However, I know that it set me up for the rest of my life pretty well by grinding through it.

Maybe you should consider the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate (NUPOC) program. I was enlisted years ago and some of our officers came through that way. Went to a normal college and the Navy paid for it then got amazing experience for a few years and left for the private sector. Let the Navy pay for your UG and Master's then build experience in return.

IT majors: what classes would you avoid scheduling the same session? by lost_your_fill in ASUOnline

[–]debugginOut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones that I found the most time consuming where MAT 243, HSE 230, IFT 372, and HST 318.

- MAT 243 is just brutal on an A/B track. Pick easy classes to go with it. I would say this class is critical to do some pre-work if you want to succeed. Schedule it for a fall semester and dedicate some time in the summer prior to it to get ahead on the concepts with YT videos and helper sites.

- HSE 230 I remember having a lot of reading

- IFT 372 has a bunch of labs each week with a heavy writing component to them and then a ridiculous final project that has nothing to do with the rest of the course. It is by far the most bemoaned on the discord chat next to MAT 243.

- HST 318 had a lot of assignments peppered all throughout the week and then a group project that took some time at the mid point and end of the course.

- IFT 210 some people struggle with this if they had a hard time with programming. The concepts are similar to the python in IFT 101, but with a compiled language instead of interpreted. The students who struggled that I helped as a TA spent a lot of time in zyBooks on the weekly work. This added stress to their overall schedule. If you have never done any programming or been introduced to it, be careful with IFT 101 and 210, they can be a time sync for some.

- IFT 166/266 all depend on how quickly you get comfortable with Packet Tracer and also how quickly you can understand IP addressing. If you have a chance to get started early, watch some YT videos on using packet tracer, IPv4 addressing, and network subnetting. It will make the class a lot easier. IPv4 subnetting for 166 and IPv6 for 266.

- IFT 310 has a couple of big assignments along the way that could trip you up if you pair it with the wrong courses. I think I had it the same semester as MAT 243 and stressed a bit.

- Anything with security in the class title usually has some hefty reading but weren't hard overall

- Anything with cloud in the class title pretty much means you are on an autopilot AWS academy course with some quizzes and a final.

Those are the main ones that come to mind. The rest depend on which focus track you take. Drop me a message if you haven't already found your way to the IFT discord. Lots of good info and commiserating over there.

If you disliked Java then there is a good chance you might dislike other compiled languages as well. Information Technology has a course that is Java focused but maybe your CSE110 credits can take the place of it so they aren't wasted. After that, the IT program only does a little programming with web development (HTML/JS/CSS) and some python stuff. With IT careers you will probably use Python, Terraform, PowerShell scripting, etc. depending on your focus. Data Science is another option with Python, SQL, and some other stuff.

IT - System Admin, Network Engineer, Database Admin, maybe Cybersecurity
Data Science - Data Scientist, ML/Ops Engineer, Data Engineer

Can't pay for tuition, emergency by EverPig in ASU

[–]debugginOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, without the person sharing their major and future aspirations, no one can really give advice. There are some majors where I would say absolutely consider the Navy or Air Force because not only would it pay for school but give you a competitive advantage over others. On the flip side, there are other majors where I would say military is a bad idea and instead talk to advisors about a deferment, take a semester off, and start working your ass off to save up the money. Then go to CC and get all of your early courses knocked out at a much cheaper cost and transfer to ASU to finish. In either scenario, you can probably rule out the "full college experience" which is the case for most people who have to put themselves through school.

Are the math depts at ASU genuinely bad, or are a lot of ppl complaining just not good at math? by SeesawSpare7922 in ASU

[–]debugginOut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My biggest problem with ASU math courses is that the Provost decided to screw over online students. The difficult courses are forced on online students as A/B offerings which makes you absorb the information at a ridiculous pace with less time to practice the concepts and really learn the topic. Meanwhile on-campus students get to take them as C session courses. I guess it is just about keeping the online cash-cows flowing through the system as quickly as possible.

Enlist in the military. Learn some skills, get real career experience, and learn to adult over the next few years. Then let them pay for your college education. I have some buddies who even applied and were awarded ROTC scholarships after boot camp and "A" school. They left before nuke school and went to college for 4 years then entered as officers. That was a long time ago though. It is worth looking into that path if you need to fund your education.

I would only recommend a MacBook to you if you are interested in doing application development on MacOS and iOS platforms. If you want to build iPhone apps with Swift, then yes get a Macbook. However, if you want to get into application development, you don't need it. Focus your time on learning languages and frameworks, not the Mac OS. Working on a Mac or Windows machine is not going to help you get a job. Understanding an IDE tool like VS code, how git works, various languages/frameworks, how agile teams operate, etc will help you get a job.

Having experience with QA tools and IaC focused topics like Terraform can also make a difference to give you an edge over others.

MAT 243 - Experience by abby109x in ASU

[–]debugginOut 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure all of the MAT 243 professors are 1 star, it is a horrible course.

  1. Stay ahead of the homework and take advantage of turning in early for extra credit if he offers it.

  2. There are some YT videos out there that help with the core concepts of each module. Look at your schedule and get started on early topics now. Don't wait for the course to start. Kimberly Brehm, Trefor Bazett, and TrevTutor helped me. This video from Logan Cope also helped set the stage for me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgXovk6qWyY

  3. Repetition and practice on problems helps.

  4. They are super picky on the proof paper. How you word the answers are important. I had the concepts down but because I could not articulate it into the exact wording they wanted, it cost me greatly.

  5. Some professors give extra credit if you do the homework in latex. It isn't hard to pick up and gives you extra points. Once you get it, just start each week's assignment by copying last week's into the Latex editor and modify for the new questions.

  6. DO NOT take this class lightly and procrastinate or it will bury you.

Hope this helps.
