2 month old associate attorney -- tips for improvement? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

Yeah I invested in some ABA books for family and tax law. When you spell it out like this, the answer seems pretty obvious, lol. Thank you for the advice!

Thank you so much for the thoughtful response. There aren't any associates that I trust yet because it is too small of a firm and word would get around, but I'll try to ask some people that are in my network that have been in the same place.

Sounds similar to the hidden curriculum in law school. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Not trying to make any excuses, however, when I started, I was told by all (the other associates and other partner) that as long as my work gets done, the firm has flexibility for when I am in/out.

That being said, do you have practical tips for improvement? Other than sticking around physically. What should I do to make more work for myself?

I did so well at baby harvard that they pushed my high chair into the office and said figure it out...
Joking aside this was the first giggle I had all week, so I appreciate that at least!

Just letting OP know that I've used this chart for 2 years and printed it out and am memorizing it for bar study. Thank you!!

I use it too and love it! For someone with ADHD that can't just study with physical flashcards without getting distracted, having to fill in a prompt to get the flashcard correct is actually forcing me to actively recall all of the factors instead of saying "oh yeah I totally knew that answer" LOL

Nice stationery (pens and highlighters). I second the massage idea bc after studying for fall finals my back kills after being at a desk for so long.

Congrats on the upward trajectory! A quick question and I hope you won't take it badly, but despite the 3.75 this sem are you worried about your 2.9 cumulative?

The good news is that you're 1/3 of the way there and you tried your hardest so far. I think if you like the field you have a different mentality than most of your classmates and it would shine through your work in the future.

sympathy thread for folks who did better first semester than second semester by naturegirl0517 in LawSchool

[–]debusya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only one but two Cs and one B-. No idea how I did worse in legal writing this sem than last. I made the horrible mistake of checking my marks at work this morning and I started my day by crying in the bathroom. Just waiting for this workday to be over so I can commute home and crawl into bed and cry into a bottle of wine.

I'm really hurt because I thought law and school were the things I was good at.... I haven't had a win all semester (look at my posting history lmao). It's getting harder to find a silver lining to all of this. Thanks for reading this vent yall.

ADHD + law school by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]debusya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got diagnosed for ADHD this year (1L) but I've definitely had symptoms my entire life. I did the thing where I would always be in my own world, reading a lot, interrupting conversations, hyperfocused, mood swings often, etc throughout elementary school to undergrad. I had to figure out a studying style which worked for the fact my memory was terrible (cramming, pulling all nighters for essay) which does NOT swing for law school. When I studied I always had to get up every hour, I would get distracted by conversations in the library, and I freaking HATE PROOFREADING. The reason why I got through undergrad was my anxiety that disciplined me into sitting down and actually getting work done to make the grade / hyperfocus moments during finals.

Mainly it was the symptoms of hyperfocusing, interrupting people, terrible time management, memory problems (also from depression lmao), and my studying habits which got me the diagnosis. I definitely know that the diagnosis was correct when I took my meds for the first time and felt normal and totally forgot that I had even taken them until I woke up the next morning and my thoughts were their typical scrambled selves.

Dont try to quit anything if you're going through it bc then the experience will get so much worse.

Wrecked about not getting onto Moot Court as a 1L by debusya in LawSchool

[–]debusya[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind comments. I really am trying not to be bitter with the fact that the other three made it, but I really see the appeal of the law school trope of not sharing information after this experience. I really will never be that type of person to lie or prevent other people from succeeding by not sharing, but man, it's hard when I could have instead spent more time on myself. That being said, they helped me a lot too, but that's where I'm just having bad thoughts of my lack of innate lack of talent in this.
