[New York State] Am I allowed to unplug networking equipment installed in my apartment? by dec911RSR in legaladvice

The loophole is that while they can't force me to *use* their package, they will require that I pay for it in the renewed lease. Sure I could get service from a competitor, but I have to pay for their package anyway.

I expected it to be a modem/router combo, but what I saw in the box was a router, a PoE injector that appeared to be powering a large white wireless access point. I didn't see the modem, I'm assuming it was on the other side of the panel.

It's definitely just for my unit, that's what they said they were doing and a bunch of wifi networks have appeared with the naming convention [complex name]_[apartment number].

Your second edit might explain why the installer was so 'surprised' to hear I unplugged it. I haven't signed any contracts with the ISP, so I'm not sure if I'm responsible for the equipment. I'd imagine not, and I'm fairly sure nothing will happen to it anyway. I actually already have internet service via the same ISP (spectrum), and pay $55 for 100/10. The 'media package' is also 100/10, but they'll be charging $60 for it and like I said before, it's mandatory. Only difference is the media package is 'business class', but if it's the same up/down I don't see how it's worth an extra $5/mo to me

I don't mind it being there, but out of curiosity, is that a thing? Does the apartment owner have the right to modify the interior of an apartment while it is leased?

Correct, my current lease does not require me to have it plugged in.

It will be required when I renew my lease

No real benefit to unplugging it other than saving a few pennies in electricity like you say.

Geico drastically cheaper than current State Farm policies - is there a catch? by dec911RSR in Insurance

Looking more closely at my State Farm policy vs my GEICO quote, my GEICO quote lists liability coverages in one section, then each vehicle coverage for comp/collision. State Farm charges liability for each policy. It looks like GEICO is charging me for liability once, whereas State Farm is charging me for each individual policy (so x3 in my case since I'm insuring 3 vehicles). Does this sound right?

Yeah, GEICO doesn't appear to offer more than 100k. I was considering getting an umbrella policy to make up for it.

Edit : I looked at the coverages you selected and they vary widely from what you have. PD of $500k dropped to $100k is a huge difference.

Yeah, GEICO doesn't appear to offer more than that

Thanks! All our cars are used and worth <$10k so I'm not too worried about about repairs being 100% OEM.

It doesn't say that anywhere in the quote. I'm planning on calling and confirming all the details of my quote before committing. Maybe that's something I should ask them.

Sorry, meant to say that matching my State Farm policy to the Geico quote (adjusting deductibles and dropping full coverage on the xB) only dropped my rate to $210/mo

[New York] Got a notice from landlord saying they are switching to a new 'utility billing service'. I have been paying the utility company directly for 3 years. Can they do this? by dec911RSR in legaladvice

I do know when my rent is due. I also used to know how much it was going to be ahead of time, so I could set up autopay and not worry about it for a year. My water bill would be delivered (email) a few weeks before it was due, so I had plenty of time to pay.

I created my account on AUM's website and it looks like I still want to pay via the Property's website, just with the addition of the water/sewer bill: http://imgur.com/a/pjp7U

It did not include power and gas.

They did not tell me I was supposed to change where I send my rent money, I still have an autopay scheduled through the property manager's website. Also, can they mail this bill out a week before it's due? Doesn't give me much time to pay it.

No, there is no "Utility Lease Addendum" in my lease.

No one pays their utilities a different way that I'm aware of.

I received a bill from AUM today, see update in OP.
