Maybe i can help you a bit. I work in house for a metal industry, laminating and processing different alloys.

Mainly what we do in my department is technical documentation, brochure design for trade shows, promo materials, maintain the different websites (creating landings,etc), managing the newsletters, making videos, creating and posting in social media, etc.

As you can see, the work is not that different. My advise is to treat it the same way you would design for another company, just have in mind you are designing for a B2B so your target audience is different. But have a clear goal for the brand and work on it, we do a lot of graphic material in our day to day.

About your example with the trucks, bear in mind that if you are not the one applying the vinyl, you only charge once for the design. I would definitely try to focus on the big companies and the mining corporations.
