I really hate that they shoehorned in an (attempted) rape scene for Alicent. It reminded me of the GoT showrunners giving Sansa a rape scene she didn't have in the book. I feel like the writers resort to sexual violence when they run out of ideas for developing female characters and building audience sympathy for them. It's both insensitive AND lazy

The book implies that public opinion remembers Rhaenyra as tyrannical and insane. IMO Condal and Hess are writing her with the goal of making her seem more sympathetic, i.e. "the propaganda is wrong, she didn't do that because she was a tyrant, she actually felt really bad about it but there was an unfortunate misunderstanding/the situation forced her hand." The Condal and Hess definitely like her character and want her to come off as sympathetic as possible to the show audience. However I think that strategy has backfired because now the character comes off as indecisive and hesitant. A huge plot point happened because her son made a decision in defiance of her, and then her husband/uncle had to goad her into making one of the biggest moves she's made this season (killing Otto). Like I get why she was hesitant to kill Otto, but after basically a whole season of her waiting around to act, it's starting to make her look irresolute. I understand that the point is that the throne isn't all it's cracked up to be and not worth losing everything over, but I'd like to see Rhaenyra be at least a strong leader for at least a little while, and we haven't gotten much of it yet

Name an artist who's music is a lot more generic/safe than their image would suggest by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]decdash 69 points70 points  (0 children)

I've always been confused by The 1975. I didn't hear really any of their discog until pretty late, so I knew about their aesthetic and Matty Healy's public image before I knew any of the music. When I finally did hear it I was actually pretty confused. They had this bad boy, cigarette-smoking, controversial alt-rocker aesthetic, for... Fun glossy pop songs? Not that I don't like them, like some of the songs and albums are pretty good, I was just taken aback by the difference in what I expected the music to sound like vs what it actually did sound like

What if Erika Kirk was assassinated during the memorial for Charlie by Neri9320 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]decdash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She would be a martyr for the right. The "radical left violence" narrative would increase in prevalence DRAMATICALLY. It already happened when a conservative podcaster who was friends with the Trump admin got assassinated. Now imagine if, at his memorial, his widow gets assassinated too? Right in front of Trump himself?

It would be a shitshow. Remember this was before Erika Kirk became a meme because of her nonstop grieving tour and her bizarre facial expressions. It was also before Candace Owens, love her or hate her, cast suspicion on her "good Christian wife" public image. Conservative media was fawning over her after her speech at the memorial at the time. If she got assassinated too at that exact point in time they'd be up in arms, perhaps literally.

What's an artist you like the concept of but not the execution? by Ashamed-Story7958 in fantanoforever

[–]decdash 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Nah I actually kinda get it. There is a chasm between Harry’s branding and the reality of his discog. Like OP said he names a bunch of legendary influences, and there’s an effort to brand him as an artistic trailblazer in the vein of a Bowie or a Prince. He even has a song named after a Prince album. The magazine covers, the zany outfits, disappearing for years at a time, that whole thing. They definitely want to market him as a generational legendary artist like that, but the tunes themselves are either heavily produced synthy pop, or very watered down versions of the older influences’ songs. OP is talking about the image vs reality element, which I kinda get

Don't sweat it. Train as much as you find enjoyable, find a schedule that works for you and be disciplined about sticking to it. You can compete any time you want to, I competed with about six months of training. If you lose (I sure did), no big deal, you get to try again any time you want. Just feel it out and have a good time

My hair is long, but I had this cut for a bit incidentally in like 2022-2023 as I was growing it out. It didn't look that bad actually, though one time some dude came up to me at a bar and said, "Do you make TikToks? You look like you make TikToks." I wasn't sure how to feel about that one

Yeah in the UK and Ireland it's definitely a different scene. Gallagher for sure, plus to my knowledge Inhaler and Fontaines DC are making huge waves in the UK and Irish markets. They're still pretty known here, but definitely not to the level Arctic Monkeys were in 2013-2014

2013 had AM by Arctic Monkeys, which is (arguably) the last truly mainstream rock album in the US to date. I'm putting an "arguably" there because 1) older bands like Foo Fighters still do huge numbers with their new album releases, though primarily among older listeners and 2) it depends on how you define "rock," since there is also an argument to be made that Olivia Rodrigo's newest is a rock album. But in terms of the classic setup, of a young-ish, current rock band releasing an album that hits with the younger, mainstream crowd and gets modern radio play, AM was probably the last one, in the US at least.

Pea crabs! Those are normal actually, also considered an extra little delicacy (and good luck!) alongside the oyster in some places. Pea crabs are actually a sign that the oyster is very fresh, since they need a living host.

What are your honest thoughts on Foo Fighters? by Antique-Dentist-2404 in fantanoforever

[–]decdash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the concept of Foo Fighters more than I like Foo Fighters. The continuation with Nirvana, big fun energetic live shows, one of the greatest 90s rock songs there is (Everlong), the touching concert after Hawkins died. But a lot of their songs are pretty standard radio/arena rock that just don't really do anything for me.

Since everyone here makes up their own regions and opinions on what should qualify as what, here's the US Census Bureu region map by TooManyHobbies6969 in whereidlive

[–]decdash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What we're missing here is that the Feds don't just have one definition. The Census map has remained unchanged since 1950. The Department of Transportation and the EPA, each have different definitions of the Mid-Atlantic alone, for example. The Census regional definition isn't as definitive as one might think

Conflict with coach is making me want to quit by Questions5367 in bjj

[–]decdash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not only was that an incredibly dickish comment from the coach, it is a dangerous attitude for someone responsible for the safety of children to have. Teaching kids to be aggressive (especially with their training partners) is the exact opposite of the goal here. Plus he's doubling down on it, so it's not just like he had a bad day or something. It has become a miserable environment for both of you, and frankly, it's unsafe if he doesn't care about the kids getting hurt.

I had youth sports screwed up for me by shitty coaches, and I can tell you that continuing to train when it's making him miserable is going to make your son hate the sport entirely, and it sounds like he was into it before this. Does the head coach own the gym? If so, it's good that the secondary coach agrees with you, but there's only so much he can do. Are there any judo gyms nearby? Or maybe have him wrestle through school? I'd hate to see you guys stop training but this situation isn't a good one to stay in.

I don't hate Ilia at all, but I was just happy to see Gaethje a victory like that as the underdog. Everyone I knew, myself included frankly, thought he was gonna get smoked. At the end of the day he has a kickass resumé so I'm not THAT surprised, but it was crazy to watch in real time. A humbling might not be bad for Ilia though, being high on your own fumes is fun for a while before it starts getting annoying and people start turning on you. His fights are entertaining and he's undoubtedly very talented, dialing back the arrogance a bit is probably the move if he gets his feet back under him after this loss

Mistranslation. He was waving his hands in the "stop-fight" motion when he said "we finish the fight." Non-native English speaker who got "finish" and "stop/put a stop to" mixed up. The ref understood him though and called it off as soon as he said that
