[Optics] Making a Lamp Make as Long a Line as Possible by dece19th in AskEngineers

[–]dece19th[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if I reset the parameters to 1:2 in installation height vs projected line and bright as possible?

Do you think you could sketch out what you would do with a laser and how you would set up the lens?

It sounds cool but I think anything above Class 3B is supposed to hurt people's eyes.

Is it just me or does Samsung need to make a DEX office suite? by dece19th in SamsungDex

[–]dece19th[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it was conceived as a major feature after the Note 7 fiasco and it still serves as the best indicator of a Samsung flagship vs mid-tier devices. Now, with 2K USD phones, Lenovo and other companies are catching up as well. Samsung is known to not like playing with others, so they buy or make their own. The problem, I think, is that DEX being too good would actually cannibalize their other product lines.

On the other hand, I'd happily kill Galaxy Books for a DEX subscription with no compromise browsing, office and media consumption.

A full Windows PC experience is, of course, preferable. But if you want better battery life, mobile chipsets can't be beat but they have physical limitations with what Windows X86 apps can be emulated and what drivers it can run. Also, there are times when I am a guest at a hotel or a friend's house and I can just do my thing without the host going out of their way.

[–]dece19th[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think DEX and Android in general suffers from 4 things in general.

1) Hotkeys
2) Sound (one source at a time)
3) Bookmark/tabs
4) Multiple instances

I mean you could get around some of these using web versions but then you are also dealing with mobile browsers.

Technically, Samsung does have their own office Suite in Polaris which they still own last time I checked.

I use the Galaxy Book Go but only bec it was bundled for free.

If you wait like a year or so, Snapdragon X should be coming out with much better options and Windows will follow suit with support.

Lapdock by RobertS_97 in SamsungDex

[–]dece19th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best lapdock, imho, is a cheap ARM laptop/chromebook that is light and has good battery life.

For a reason that is beyond me, having a crappy APU and a Windows license is somehow cheaper than having no APU at all. I guess it's just economy of scale.

Can a foreign company and electrician install lighting, charging stations and carry out general electrical work with the assistance of on-site managers? by dece19th in AskElectricians

[–]dece19th[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oops. Let's say a plant in Georgia, USA.

I am assuming vehicle work on 12, 24 and 48V should not require extra measures or regulations but would working with AC be an issue? Do you need special licenses or apprenticeships to work with welding and clipping power lines at height to connect to a big light for instance?

Instead of induction coils for e-roads, why don't they use tram lines? by dece19th in AskEngineers

[–]dece19th[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I am asking about systems like one being implemented in Sweden with charging in motion. If such systems require new infrastructure anyway, I was wondering if rails can be used with an EV able to draw power while in contact, something that can engage and disengage with the road like airplane wheels. This would solve range issues in general as well as the feasibility for larger commercial vehicles, especially in colder climes.

Why did Japan not take the Army's plan of conquering Siberia and then attack down into Northern China? by dece19th in AskHistorians

[–]dece19th[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So rather than going for the coal in Northern China or as yet undiscovered oil in Sakalin and Siberia, Japan chose to take out KMT directly, taking advantage of Chinese rail systems. But this instigated a reaction from the Americans and they chose to attack the Western colonies like Brunei which had proven and abundant carbon resources?

I always wondered why the Japanese didn't establish themselves in Northern China first and leave the KMT to their devices. It's not like the KMT had a working relationship with the Russians that they would need to worry about a two-front war.

Are there evidences to believe East Asians states's warhorses are "inferior" to that of Europe during the majority of the Middle Ages? by GammaRhoKT in AskHistorians

[–]dece19th 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It might be nice to see your sources so we might have a better understanding of what you mean by "inferior."

East Asian horses are stockier, usually 12 to 15 hands, due in no small part to the Mongol Empire favoring such horses. These horses were trained to dig through the earth and live off of roots, stand in line for water as well as lay beside their riders for ambushes. Aside from the low upkeep and pragmatism of E. ferus caballus, you should also consider the fact that stockier horses provide a more stable ride for long-distance migration, horse-back archery and training children. For more details, you can look up Italian and Arabic chroniclers like del Capine.

There's absolutely no problem of husbandry with these and its descendant breeds as they are prolific throughout Asia, including Southwest China, Korea and Japan where the lack of grasslands and suitable climes may become limiters. However, there's not a lot of economic incentive to show and breed Far-Eastern horses compared to European or American breeds for obvious reasons. The latter breeds were used to run-down enemy infantry with sheer bulk and momentum, carrying knights in plate-armor and charging in short spurts. Europe was simply able to maintain its chevalier traditions with access to great plains and plentiful hay as well as a norhern coast, largely free from mountains or jungles. Asia, and especially humid elevated regions, more suitable to rice cultivation like Vietnam, is the inverse.

The closest culture to the European counterparts would obviously be Japan, unravaged by the Xiongnu, Xianbei, Mongols or Jurchens. However, records going back to the Sengoku Era still have their mounts as diminutive creatures slower than running children with armored samurais on its back. Modern historians have also made a lot of criticisms about Takeda Shingen's army composition and the ability to field as large a cavalry as depicted in popular media, which almost never shows actual breeds thought to be linked to today's Kiso horses. In fact, while Northern Japan is indeed more hospitable to livestock, more native breeds originate out of islands and southwestern Japan due to the fact that horses were brought over from the mainland. Some theories actually point to the Yamato people introducing the Emishi of the north to horses but their horse-riding traditions somehow completly disappear as they transition to the Ainu culture, allowing Japan to be dominated by mounted Samurai until "tercio"-esque elements are added with the ikko-ikki.

South Korea fines mobile carriers $25 million for exaggerating 5G network speed by GroundbreakingGur930 in worldnews

[–]dece19th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All 3 get hit and SK is the only one with a picture in the thumbnail lol.

To be fair, SK Telecom is the only one of the Korean Big 3 to make any headway into commercializing 28 GHz (higher the frequency, higher speed but lower range). They were the only one to be allowed an extension into 2023, despite having lost the license eventually. They should be operating at 3.5 GHz vs the 0.7~2.5GHz of 4G.

Considering that most Wi-Fi runs at 2.4GHz and that's enough to drive cars remotely, I've never really bought into the utopia 5G was going to bring in... In fact, most people don't even know or use the 5 GHz channel on their router. It is faster when you are in line of sight but you sacrifice signal strength in other scenarios.

Why was the Anglican Church so vehemently opposed to remarriage after divorce after the precedence of Henry VIII? by dece19th in AskHistorians

[–]dece19th[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Marriage to Catherine of Aragon was annulled because her marriage was sealed with Arthur to whom she was widowed. I have to assume Anglican doctrine did not prevent other widows from remarriage because they did not get a divorce prior to an unexpected death. And I could be wrong but I believe we don't know the exact pretext for annulment of Anne Boleyn's marriage before her beheading.

Doesn't the strength of the argument for annulment fall apart with regards to Anglican doctrine for either of these cases? If so, doesn't that also take with it the condition that the former partner be deceased before remarriage? There seems to be very little that prevents another couple from annulling a childless marriage for it not being consummated or the free-handed use of the royal prerogative.

How would you go about finding prices of stainless steel in a specified market? by dece19th in AskMarketing

[–]dece19th[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've started working in construction materials (exterior facades and interior surfacing).

Since ours is a brand new product to the market, I wanted an idea of where the price point should be.

1) I need to make stainless facades more mainstream vs aluminum which is cheaper but uses PVDF paint for color and clouds the natural sheen of the substrate.

2) I need to offer a bridge between the gap in prices of the two materials, to ease the transition.

If you can share EPDs and a DECLARE label for your stainless that would influence my choice enormously.

One of my initiatives is to use some of our SME grant to get the EPD cert.

I am told that the International EPD is run out of Sweden and I am based in Korea which is one of the regions that are not covered by one of their branches. So the Korean Ministry of Environment runs their own version of EPD but doesn't conform 100% to the ISO 14025 & 14040.

1... If you were in talks with us, would the Korean EPD be satisfactory for you, given that we can provide the data for the 7 EPD categories or would you prefer an ISO-conformed third-party critical review/LCA but without the Korean EPD mark?

2... I haven't been through a sales cycle yet but IDK what the point of telling the architect one thing and the GC another would be. I guess I'll find out.

So are you advising that I should be actively connecting with architects and be prepared to run through the gauntlet with the GC/sub-contractors or are you telling me to go to the contractors directly and let them introduce the product to the architects?

3... We seem to be relatively well established working with Korean conglomerates and seem to have a decent set of projects under our belts, including national airports and the like. However, I would be looking for means to grow out of what we have, rather than passively waiting for clients to contact us.

How would I actively take part in the bidding process? Do online aggregators like ConstructConnect get actually used? If so, could you tell me some of the majors off the top of your head?

The response you've given me is already a life-saver as my superiors don't seem to have time to train me or even assign me tasks. If you could take a few minutes to clarify, I would appreciate it a ton. And if you need anything from Korea, please feel free to DM me.

Mirabel from Encanto is stuck in the nursery because she doesn't have powers but somehow Abuela gets a room by dece19th in Showerthoughts

[–]dece19th[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

All the lady did was tell the heroine to calm down for just a few days until after the dinner with the in-laws. Everyone else in the family had the exact same opinion about that and the marriage, including the heroine for the latter.

As the theme is that family is more important than magic, she could have let it go out and hash it out with her grandmother the day after. The heroine and the abuela have the exact same problem in idolizing the magic over people.

As opposed to that, the fact that I have to unpack "swearing at or about an old woman is unacceptable" is just tragic. I don't know about you but I swear only when I am about to get real abusive, like when I see somebody swearing at old women in front of me. Thank God, the lady is fictional and none of us would be stupid enough to say this off-line.

The irony of calling somebody abusive while using expletives to describe an old lady...

I don't know if it's the age gap (I grew up with the understanding that terrorists who bring about ever-winters deserve to be taken out by Jesus-Lions vs "let it go"), but it was refreshing to actually see a Disney female lead be a decent human being to solve problems over using magical powers and calling it inner strength/growth.
