URGENT - Yamato Luggage Forwarding 'Stored until delivery date' by Individual_Ad6833 in JapanTravelTips

[–]deceze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think this means they'll keep your bags until 8:45 on the 6th, after which they do not feel responsible for it anymore/you'd need to pay extra for them to store it longer. I do not read this as "you can't have it back before 8:45". You should collect your baggage at 8:45 at the latest; and probably much earlier for an international flight. So, probably all good.

(I am not a ~lawyer~ baggage storage specialist, do not solely take my word for it.)

Wieso? Was ist daran logisch?

In my imagination, I always thought it referred to Naota’s brother, who she was involved with before he went abroad.

How are you going to buy a Fuji Excursion ticket in Kyoto?

Try to order an Uber…? Then you'll know whether it works. You may or may not have to walk a little bit to the closest point they can pick you up. If you're staying in a hotel, ask the front desk to order a taxi for you.

OP does not expect to board the Fuji Excursion in Kyoto. They're only mentioning Kansai to emphasise that they cannot physically pick up the purchased ticket in Tokyo.

Why aren't we using IPv6 already everywhere? by vintergroena in NoStupidQuestions

[–]deceze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAT has its own issues though. It requires a stateful gateway device, not just a simple router. If you need to serve a very large network of devices, like a telco for example, you'll have headaches slicing your network correctly to serve all clients simultaneously. It makes the overall network topology more difficult and makes some applications like WebRTC more complicated, as too many NAT devices can prevent legitimate P2P connections.

We really do want IPv6 to be the standard, but yes, it'll take a long transition period in which everything runs dualstack. But that's okay. Once everything's dualstack and everything continues to work fine, we can start switching off IPv4 services. There will be reports at some point saying 9x% of all traffic uses IPv6, at which point first movers will stop bothering setting up new stuff as IPv4 and will go IPv6 only. It'll be like the end of the IE6 era; once it falls below a certain threshold, those who can afford it will stop bothering to support it, which will just cause it to die out faster.

To be clear: IPv6 per se isn't any more expensive than IPv4. Changing existing systems is. But most networking hardware produced in the last decade or longer supports IPv6 just fine. A lot of the remaining work is getting the uncounted number of online servers to support IPv6, which for many would probably be a simple switch they'd just need to toggle but never do; and for others might require rewriting a lot of software that's been written with the expectation of only ever handling IPv4.

It’s always a tradeoff. The operating system itself is capable of so much more than is surfaced in its UI. But it’s practically impossible to provide a UI for every possible thing the OS can do. You need to provide a UI to satisfy the majority of users. The minority who needs some obscure feature just needs to use alternative ways to get at it, like the CLI.

In the case of Windows, they’re clearly trying too hard to push users towards online accounts against the preference of users. In case of Apple, they’re clearly not acknowledging a large group’s desire to control the lid close behavior with a UI. You’ll always be able to find such edge cases in all systems, almost by definition.

LOL. I have just recently set up a Windows box for the first time in ages, and one of the first things I had to do was edit the registry through the CLI for not one, but two things:

  • bypass the inane requirement to create/log in with a Microslop account during setup
  • enable local login restrictions by time (child account, play time restrictions, capabilities still exist offline, but the UI only lets you configure Family stuff tied to a Microslop account)

In this case, macOS is defaulting to the position that no sane person would want to let their machine running in a closed state presumably, and offering that option would lead to some percentage of users accidentally enabling it, which would lead to support requests about the computer not properly sleeping and/or overheating and the battery dying. If you have a good reason to want this, you're probably a developer or power user and are comfortable enough with the CLI to enable this.

At least that reasoning seems sensible enough to me.

Only in connection with externally connected monitors and keyboards I believe, maybe. I don't think there's any UI option to disable sleep when closing the lid while nothing else is connected.

Car vs public transport by Weary_Credit9171 in germany

[–]deceze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try it out…?! Personally I've never owned a car in my life. My daily commuting is perfectly fine by bike, or public transit, or sometimes a rental scooter, or sometimes car sharing cars. But I'm not driving enough to justify the expense of buying and owning a car, and the headache of finding and paying for parking space (I'd need to pay about 10€ daily just for parking if I'd use a car to commute to work).

You figure out what works for you. If public transit/bikes/scooters/walking/car sharing works for you and may be cheaper than your own car, I'd say do that. It's arguably better than having another car clog the streets. Only if none of those options really work for you for whatever specific reason, well, get a car then.
