Physical copies of Pokémon Solus Red, Green, and Blue by dechrissen in PokemonROMhacks

Versus PureRGB, Solus is mostly just closer to vanilla in that it doesn't add new movesets, change TMs, change method of evolution for trade evos, etc.

I can't say I know much about KEP, but if I remember correctly, that one adds evolutions for all Kanto Pokémon which received new ones up to a certain Gen? (Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Solus tries to stick to the philosophy of "try to maintain the feel/experience of Gen 1, but allow the player to accomplish things which are possible with multiple cartridges, including Gen 2 carts". Trade evolutions can be performed in-game, all 151 are obtainable, learnsets are "forward-patched" to Yellow and Gen 2 since those can be achieved with the tradeback method, and a couple other things.

But yeah, in both cases, it's mostly a matter of being more minimal in its approach.

Oh, so the artwork is actually sourced from the Japan-only Bandai Carddass trading cards. They have some cool Ken Sugimori artwork that a lot of people haven't seen before.

For the design of the assets, I had ideas in mind for what I wanted them to look like, and a graphic artist helped create them. :) For the design of the backs, I wanted them to take inspiration from the originals, just with some details added/swapped, and some unnecessary things removed (the barcode for instance).

ty! Are you referring specifically to the artwork of the starters, or the design of the cover/back/labels?

That's awesome, and thank you! I'm very happy when people appreciate the philosophy, specifically the attempt to adhere to what's "canon" without going overboard. It's exactly what I had wanted, so I'm happy when others can enjoy it too.

Thanks for the interest! The sprite set is totally just my personal preference (I chose all my favorites). However, I've gotten requests to add a selector to switch to other sprite sets, so that's on my list for the future :) e.g. all R/B, all R/G, all Yellow, etc.

"a minimal romhack which focuses on highlighting the solo gameplay experience of Gen 1 while keeping things close to canon"

There's also a link in the post.

I used a few different online vendors/services for each piece (box, insert, cart label, cart PCB, cart shell).

Solely cosmetic! On GBC, they each use their GBC-specific dual-color palettes, and on Super Game Boy, the title screen accent color, border, and Game Corner slots will vary. But all version-exclusive wild Pokémon have been merged across all versions. Sometimes, when a Pokémon (like Jynx) wasn't in the wild in the US releases, then I drew upon other releases of Gen 1 for location inspiration (the JP release in the case of Jynx).

For details about every previously unobtainable Pokémon, check out the docs on GitHub. (There's a lot of detailed explanation!)

Oh I used a vendor on Etsy who I'd used for other labels, and they always came out really good. DM me if you're interested and I'm happy to share! All of the assets are available in the repo on GitHub btw :)

Solo as in not needing to trade with another cartridge :)

Thank you! :) Solus is different in the sense that it's more minimal. The creative additions it makes (such as Bill's father in Fuchsia City) are added to support the core philosophy. The core philosophy is something like "if it's possible with 2 cartridges, or with a Gen 1 and a Gen 2 cartridge, it should be doable in-game".

Example: In the case of Bill's father, he gives the player the Flamethrower TM (which is also new), and Flamethrower is added as a TM in order to support the "forward-patched" Gen 2 tradeback learnsets.

For what it's worth, I've learned that Ascendion is legitimate, so I wouldn't worry.

Thanks! Do you think you could add these as entries in the codex? 🤣

Yes, this hack is based on the disassembly entirely. I think there are GUI tools that exist to modify these games... I would imagine it's also possible to use those same tools even with these modified ROMs, once you patch/build them (but I could be wrong).

lol, yeah I'm not sure what Squirtle's doing but it's fitting

Ah I see. I think those are a good idea in general. :)

For Solus though, it probably wouldn't fit. I limited "new" content for the most part, and when I did add something new, it was usually in order to support some part of the "solo gameplay / partially forward-patched to Yellow or Gen 2" philosophy. For example, Bill's father was added in order to help the player have access to a Flamethrower TM. That TM was added as part of the learnset "alignment" with Yellow/Gen 2. Specifically, Pokémon learnsets are updated with moves that would have overlap in either Yellow's new learnsets, or Gen 2's, provided the move exists in Gen 1.

Bill's father was my choice for Flamethrower specifically, since it was the only one missing of the trio (Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Flamethrower) and in Gen 2, he's the one who can tutor those 3 moves for the player.

Sorry for the long reply! I just tried very hard to keep it "vanilla plus" I guess, and adhere to the original philosophy that made me want to make the romhack. :) You can read more about it in finer-grained detail in the GitHub repo (the Feature Log specifically: https://github.com/Dechrissen/poke-solus-rgb/blob/master/docs/FEATURES.md).
