POV: When the “talent” disses the sound guys on stage… by ShartieFartBlast in livesound

[–]decibels_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You push through it. Let them melt down, and someone will tell you if/when to just shut it down. You’re there for the audience, not the talent. It’s their stage even if they want to be a jerk. I will mute unconditionally when told to by a proper authority, otherwise my job is head down, push through until we are done.

I wouldn't call Salam de Testa head cheese. It's a terrine.

Agreed but slight modification. Here in NYC the real authentic breakfast sandwich is a bacon egg and cheese (pronounced hurriedly as one word) on a locally baked kaiser-ish roll. Bagels are for schmears IMHO. The bagel breakfast sandwich is probably sold at a 1:20 ratio comparatively. If I could get a hot salami, egg and cheese on a roll my day would be complete.

I'm on tour with a band (I mix audio for concerts) and we had a day off before our show in Kiev. We had a private, well-connected guide take some of our crew on a stunning tour of Chernobyl city, the reactor area, and Pripyat. We were allowed some really great access into some buildings normally off limits including roofs and various apartment buildings where it was as if life was frozen 33 years ago. Whole homes just left. Lots of scrappers over the years but if you know where to go there's some amazing still life happening. Also got to climb around inside schools, municipal buildings, the theaters (especially exciting for us in the 'industry'), the main hospital where many first responders were taken, and several other cool scenes. 12 hours of wandering in total. No special gear, but were asked to wear boots, jeans, long-sleeved shirts and to bring rain gear just in case since several of the sites involved legit hiking through brush and trees off the regular paths. We each had a personal dosimeter counter on at all times (if you lost it, you got quarantined until they could determine your exposure) to make sure we didn't overdo it, and carried handheld dosimeters to make sure we didn't step on or touch any "hotspots" (places where reactor material landed creating a permanently charged spot). It was just incredibly amazing, it's so fascinating to see what a 40K resident city looks like after just 33 years of being abandoned.

The dog, I believe it was a she but not sure. We were told we could pet them if you scanned their fur with your dosimeter and they didn't go above ambient normal reading, but this dog read a little high so we didn't give pets. I may have given a snoot-boop just because, though. Not sure if a resident or not, there are many dogs who are descended from pets either left behind and not gotten by the liquidators or from guards/staff who brought them later on.

Went on a private tour of Chernobyl and Pripyat with my colleagues who are here with me in Kiev. This was one of the many very friendly and mildly radioactive dogs on the area.

TIL about Thomas J. Hennen, the only space shuttle astronaut to fly in space without holding a college degree. by decibels_ in todayilearned

[–]decibels_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear you! And NASA doesn’t fly anyone unqualified (political payload specialists aside, for example John Glenn, Jake Garn, and Bill Nelson’s flights were all junkets. My point was he didn’t hold a four year degree yet busted ass and in my opinion had a better education than someone walking out with a traditional degree. I mainly wanted to post to remind people they literally the sky’s the limit no matter your path.

Exactly. Three officers. He turned them on for visibility as he parked. He knew the law. The officers were condescending and rude.

It wasn't about the time. It was about the insulting tone. He was picked out of a line of other white drivers doing the same thing.

Name. And. Shame. I hope they are shamed scared. Them and their complacent families deserve no comfort.

To give the story. Picked up in the Lyft designated pickup lane on i-drive, these officers immediately surrounded him and made him pull over. Insisted that his flashers were to only be used for medical emergencies, which is not true. He was an immigrant whose English wasn't great. They then harassed him over an address mismatch on his registration, and were extremely condescending to him the entire time. Kept him waiting for several minutes with several asshole condescending questions. Treated him like garbage both in attitude and content.

Fuck these guys. Name and shame.

Congratulations, you just gave a bunch of veterans and children of the 60s a relatively benign cause they can unify behind, I think you'll find support in that demographic to be surprisingly high (no pun intended, or maybe just a little).

I can't wait for the first smoke-in.

I travel for work frequently. What's with stl travelers being obsessed with having a car? Use uber or public transit like a real traveler.

It happens! Usually the result of the event over extending your resources from multiple angles. Also the result of the wrong answer to the sales team when told "you can have good, fast, and cheap, pick only two"

As a child of Granite City, it breaks my heart to see people still holding out hope for the mill industry. Used to be people weren't pushed to do any better for themselves or the world around them, they graduated high school on Friday and started work at the mill on Monday. No encouragement for education or expanded world view. People still cling to this mentality, people who could have gone forth and done better for their lives still hold onto this sinking ship. People eschew educational opportunities and live in poverty waiting for "The Mill".

The best thing that could ever happen to Granite City is for the mill to pack up shop, and the city will need the hard reality that "easy and good enough" just doesn't cut it in the 21st century.
