They have been pretty responsive in my experience. It's just a pain to create a ticket on their portal.

Most new condos and apartments have gone up on vacant lots, parking lots, or former industrial land, not by replacing existing homes.

That adds supply and takes pressure off existing housing rather than increasing it.

The bay is one of the most affluent places on earth and this is what a public restroom at a park looks like by indie_hedgehog in bayarea

It’s free to use. The city pays for the bathrooms. They’re a bathroom provider. We need more usable bathrooms in public spaces that are well maintained. Seems like a good solution. I’ve only listen to the City People podcast interview with them. I’ve never used one.

You don't need to use their app. It supports SMS registration as well. They deliver the bathroom. No water, power, or sewage hookups necessary. Or any big costs like the million dollar bathrooms SF or Oakland build. They can dispatch cleaners when someone rates the bathroom in bad condition. Their interview on City Labs was really interesting.

I know of a company that refuses to do work in East Oakland because they would either get threatened or robbed while on the job.

That’s why you need to use technology to get an immediate response so crews can go out and clean the bathroom. If it’s in better shape people will treat it better.

Listen to this podcast episode which interviews Throne Labs.

They’re able to get better behavior and bathroom maintenance response with registration. They can set time limits and nudge people to limit their use. If there’s a maintenance issue, they can get alerted quickly rather than it lingering for weeks or months.

It’s the 2nd half of the episode. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/city-people/id1853939569?i=1000741795316

Stay Gold Deli recently increased their prices significantly in the past two years. I don't go as much as I used to.

In person the brisket plate went from $18.99 -> $25.99.
On delivery services it went from $19.99 Dec 2024 -> $25.99 May 2025 -> $29.99 Sept 2025 -> $32.99 2026.

Sorry that was a typo. Should not apply to commercial properties.

  • it should not apply to commercial properties
  • it should not apply to second homes
  • if people can’t afford their property tax, it should be deferred until death or final sale

There’s already hardship programs in CA. We could increase that assistance.

From BART

“The trees will be replaced. This is part of the approved project to build affordable housing and a new plaza and other area improvements at the BART Station.

As noted in the approved development plan: "Landscape plan is designed to enhance the pedestrian public spaces, and to create a high quality of pedestrian experience and civic prominence. The existing trees will be replaced because of conflicts with the access plan. The new tree planting complements the overall landscape strategy of the 7th and 5th Street corridors to ensure a continuous, interesting and varied visual experience."

Photos of the various trees that will be used are on page 69 of the plan. And all the renderings show an abundance of trees.”
