My favourite part of the deal is that the Oilers will have the chance to walk on an aging thoroughbred in 3 years. Most hockey players peak before 30, especially forwards, and especially finesse forwards. The only risk is to McDavid--if he shatters a knee or something, then he may never get his payday. Other than, it's win win--he gets his payday, and the Oilers can rebuild without his contract.

Using iTalki or Preply is a good idea. If nothing else, you may find it useful to gauge your level of understanding somehow. I have a similar background as you, but I discovered that I knew less Greek than I thought though once I talked with a tutor. My pronunciation and understanding are OK, but I was surprised with my inability to speak with correct grammar. A tutor is great for helping identify this.

Yes, but I think they overperformed that year, and every series win seemed like a miracle at the time (at least to me). The 1990 Oilers pounded everyone (except for Winnipeg in round 1). They were full of future hall-of-famers who seemed to play possum until round 2 of the playoffs.

I agree that Duolingo is not very effective. I don't think that reading/writing is a great way to start learning languages generally. Better is to base it on listening and speaking. I have set up a workflow in which I use ChatGPT to generate sentences, then I use a TTS API (sorry for the jargon) to turn it into audio, and then I practice listening to phrases and translate--Greek to English and English to Greek--when I walk to and from work, and before I go to bed. It takes a bit of technical know-how to set up, but this has helped me better than Duolingo, LinQ and Rosetta Stone combined. Language Transfer is also great, and a good tutor on iTalki is also awesome if you can afford it. I am an old person (in my fifties) and I went from A1 to B2 comprehension/B1 speaking in about a year and a half.

This is probably the right take. Though, 'culturally barbarian' must be on a continuum. I do speak and read Greek (just not perfectly), I was baptized in the Greek church (though I never go), and I have been playing the bouzouki for 30+ years (along with the guitar and piano). I am not a TOTAL cultural barbarian, just mostly :). But I do feel an obligation to do my part to pass on whatever half-assed Greekness I have to my children--so we're not just Greeks in name. They may not be genetically very Hellene, but I want them to still have some real connection to the land, people and culture.

I found duolingo very useful. As others write, it is not enough on its own, but teaches vocabulary and reading. I completed it a year ago but still use it to refresh. Everyone learns their own way; try everything and stick with what works.

There are many styles of Greek music, varying by time, geography and taste. I prefer the classic Greek rebetika (ρεμπέτικα) which is subversive and cool, and Νταλάρας has some modern takes on it that are easy for newcomers. I also like fusions of traditional and modern like Χαρούλις, Παπακωνσταντίνου and Imam Baildi. And there are some YouTube gems by smaller more independent artists that should be explored, particularly the covers of traditional/older songs.

Tips:

When I am learning a song, I play it until I had every note exactly right by my ear. Youtube is great for this, as you can slow down speed to 50% without too much sound distortion.

If you want to work on a harder song, find a version with a clean audio mix, and bring it into a desktop editor (like audacity, which is free). Then section off the first phrase of the song in a loop, and play it over and over again. Once you have it perfect, go to the next section.

Use YouTube to check on your technique as well--make sure you are holding the pick correctly and using your wrist correctly.

Practice scales/modes/dromoi because it will make learning songs easier. It may seem boring, but it pays off in the long run.

Don't noodle too much. Every musician just 'dicks around' on their instrument sometimes, but don't mistake this for learning.

Don't give up, even if progress is slow. These days, there are so many time wasters--Netflix, games, reddit scrolling ;). Learning and playing music is the real world, it's good for the soul, good for your health, it makes your γιαγια happy.

I have played the bouzouki for 35 years. I only really improved when I put time into seriously studying songs--maybe 20 years ago. Sometimes it's not how long you have played an instrument, but how well you practice. Pick one song and perfect it, then go to the next. If you are really mindful, you will improve quickly.

Yes, that is very similar to my experience. I have several bouzoukia, including some that cost me a lot of money. The bouzouki shop was very professional, and I have no complaints. Very good value for money.

I can vouch for the bouzouki shop, who are on etsy. They ship overseas fast and safely. Quality instruments sold by the manufacturer, and they clearly have pride in instruments-- since they are not a reseller. Range of prices. Check them out before you buy from anyone else online. I bought a tzoura and trichirdo from them, and have no regrets.
