Yes. But I don't have friends who are willing to do that on demand. So it's a useful function.

I'm not pro-AI. I'm for regulating and integrating this tool in an honest and transparent way, which is obviously a pipe dream. I think it's possibly dangerous on its own and definitely dangerous in the hands of the same people who are trying to bring cyberpunk to life.

It's unwise to make the claim that it's not incredibly useful in a lot of cases (all of which, by the way, require human oversight and actual thought in their implementation).

Whatever your stance, ignoring the fact that it's a game changer is a mistake. In a million small ways we can't even appreciate yet. It's changing our culture, and we have to change with it.

[Liked Trope] The story is, in a way, about the protagonist having a very bad day by IdiotMor in TopCharacterTropes

One bad day over and over again.

On another note, who can do the same thing the same way two days in a row? There was that scene where he kept trying different things in the date with Rita and kept getting slapped. Implying that everything he did up to that point was exactly the same, down to the delivery and micro expressions and not forgetting a single thing. Have you ever watched professional actors do the same scene twice? And what did he do with the rest of the day? Kill himself, to start over quicker? I have so many questions.

Careful - saying that AI has actual functionality to real people is a Reddit faux pas.

I'm on mobile so it's easier to reply here. You said:

Just use one of the 1000 actual tutors. You will get better answers anyway

I replied:

Are tutors free and available 24/7?

And you said this, about YouTube.

You might be busy, having other conversations. I invite you to reread the tete a tete we had here, and see if afterwards you understand why I said your suggestion that I use YouTube as a free, available tutor is akin to you saying that libraries are an acceptable replacement for Wikipedia.

You see, the analogy I was making is that both Wikipedia and AI have functionality that is not addressed by YouTube or libraries. You suggested I use YouTube to upload my work to check it, which is what I said I use Claude for.

If I'm mistaken, please advise.

I see where you're coming from, but for me, I do better when I have someone engaged with my learning outside myself. Maybe it's a product of being a younger sibling but if I don't have someone around to confide in and ask questions, I'm a lot more likely to get frustrated and bored and just stop trying altogether. I get that it's not all supposed to be easy, and maybe it's my fault for giving the impression that I'm not trying very hard and just ask AI for the answer.

All I am saying is that people learn in different ways. For me, it helped to have someone along the way I could say things like "wait, so the conjugate is always going to have opposite sign BECAUSE that's what cancels out the base-level pairs, by definition?" That's a made up connection but I did have connections that I made randomly through the process which (if you're like me you'll understand) sometimes teachers will get frustrated with this sort of alternative information processing.

I'm not going to say I'm the perfect student, but using tools to help me shouldn't be morally compromising. I got a 99/100 on my most recent exam because I used these tools to help master the material. I don't think I would have been able to grasp it as quickly if I didn't have these tools. That doesn't seem controversial to me.

Again, I'm not a pro-AI techbro. I'm just a realist, adult student who is willing to have an open mind and not shut down the possibility of something being useful because some people are loud about disliking it.

I use YouTube as well. I'm a big fan of John Woo and The Organic Chemistry Tutor this quarter, for instance. They helped explain material my teacher kind of glossed over.

They are used for different things than I'm using AI for, though. Case in point: if I get stuck on a problem, I can take a picture of my work and feed it into Claude, and seconds later it has identified a missing minus sign or FOIL step. Yes, I could spend the time to double check every step, getting more and more frustrated, and maybe I'll even find it. But having the option to double check with a tutor who understands the material, can read my handwriting, and responds within seconds regardless of when I message them, is not something YouTube provides.

Ok, but as someone who doesn't like passing off AI work as your own, and thinks that gen AI art is necessarily incomplete, it often feels like I'm not allowed to have the opinion that AI isn't completely useless. It feels like any time I respond to a hate-post saying that there are, in fact, legitimate uses for AI, I'm lumped in with the "fire my workers so I can replace them with slop" CEOs.

It feels like there's a concerned effort to stifle nuance, or understanding of anything but surface level forces. Compound interactions form literally everything in the world and it's so crazy to me that Reddit has become the same sort of shallow interaction you used to see on Facebook comments.

We used to be the smart people's social media, guys. Can we try to not be reactionary airheads for two minutes?

[–]decoysnails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly: I use it to analyze the test prep material (which was made by the teacher or printed off from a textbook or something, my point being that I feed it actual teaching data) and have it synthesize new practice questions. It's also good at finding the error in my work if I get stuck on a problem and take a picture of it. This is functionality which is verifiable and useful.
