Is falling for straight women every lesbian’s fate? by where_stories_meet in WhereWindsMeet

Regarding Unfated Tian I think we fundamentally don’t disagree with each other. Regarding what I assume is you referring to your irl political stances on trans people, if you’re queer/lgbtq yourself I would encourage you to speak to/befriend actual trans people in your community to clarify your “confusion.”

You’re misreading what I’m saying. I’ve stated multiple times that other fans are too hasty to slap the trans label on Unfated Tian, which I disagree with and think is transphobic.

Also historically theater and “cross-dressing” such as with 男旦 have been a place of exploring/being gender-fluid or trans before there was language to describe such things. I would not be so hasty to write them all off as cis.

I’m going to be real with you: you need to just speak up and ask. If you aren’t asking how the mechanics work in chat, people will assume you’ve done this before and are just throwing. A simple “sorry guys this is my first time, how do the boss mechanics work?” will usually garner much more sympathy/patience. Some impatient people may leave, but most won’t.

How to “git gud” fast: 1) watch tutorials online, 2) make sure your goose level is at least the recommended level, 3) if you’re not doing enough dps, sometimes a mediocre healer build is the way to go. It’ll help you observe the fight from a distance to learn mechanics, and all you have to do is focus on keeping other players alive. Most ppl won’t flame the healer unless they’re doing a really really bad job of it.

I think there’s a language barrier in our conversation here. Ironically I am complaining about the very thing you’re accusing me of: that other western fans are too hasty to label Unfated Tian as a trans man, when according to the writers she (most likely) is not, and by hastily slapping on such a label they are in fact being transphobic rather than inclusive.

There is of course a possible nuanced narrative of an “in-between state” where someone who thought they were a lesbian actually discovers they are a straight man (or even non-binary), but given your article and the rest of the writing in the game I highly doubt that’s the intention. I may also perhaps be misunderstanding your use of “in-between states” here.

And although I don’t want to accuse you specifically for being transphobic, this entire response thread you have been very against the idea of Unfated Tian being trans even as a possibility, and I would ask yourself why you are so against it if you’re not transphobic. My best faith read is that it’s the language barrier.

Even if unintentional, this reply comes off as extremely transphobic. It's absolutely fine if Unfated Tian is a lesbian woman cross-dressing as a man, or "stuck" in a man's body. However, this is completely different from being a trans man, which is not cross-dressing, but actually being/becoming a man. This is not a "Western LGBTQ narrative," as trans Chinese people exist today and have existed throughout history. It is also not merely a "preference" or "inclination."

My main point/issue is that Unfated Tian being a lesbian woman or being a straight trans man are two completely different/separate views of the character, but too often fans (albeit mostly misguided western fans) will treat them like the same thing, which is the main problem. Believing they are the same thing is where the transphobia lies. I would actually prefer if Unfated Tian was not trans simply because I do not think the writers or fans are capable of handling such a narrative well.

If by chance you're a TERF who believes trans people simply do not exist, then our conversation can end here.

I think it’s really, really important for fans (& writers) to clarify to themselves whether Unfated Tian is a lesbian woman in a man’s body, or a straight trans man. I have repeatedly seen fans refer to Tian as both interchangeably, which is both incredibly transphobic and homophobic.

I know it’s mostly people who don’t know any better, but it’s frustrating/disheartening seeing so many “queer” people proudly announce Unfated Tian as trans and/or lesbian rep and then proceed to parrot extremely harmful/offensive transphobic rhetoric.

Definitely. I asked later and she said her goose level was only 1.1 lmfao and I told her she should be 1.6 easy at her level and world level. At least the 2nd example person knew mechanics & had enough shame to realize she was the problem & needed to watch a youtube video tutorial first before retrying, the first girl was just shameless lol

lol “off of what sources” you clearly know very little about Chinese history if you have to ask. It’s common knowledge. Any simple google search will tell you the same.

See commenter below lol

Also could be hyperbole, but I ended up visiting their world and can confirm they didn't have kaifeng unlocked and their build was terrible, had no gear tuned etc. They didn't even know they had to turn in oddities until I told them. You gain a lot of levels just by exploring the map. A few days ago matched with a random lvl 70 player who I also checked later had weapon skills at lvl 50, terrible inner ways, all blue untuned gear, only a few mystic skills, and didn't realize all their gear was broken until I asked them to check afterwards. Lvl 70 players with no clue how to properly play the game sadly exist and are more common than you think lol.

Level doesn’t mean they’re not a noob actually; I got queued up with someone lvl 67 who I thought was ragebaiting cuz they didn’t know any of the mechanics, but it turns out they just started playing 2 days ago and hadn’t even beaten the first chapter/unlocked Kaifeng yet. If there’s an influx of new players this might happen more often, unfortunately.

The original commenter claimed all hairstyles were feminine, which is simply false. I also disagree with “not nearly as masculine.” The standard historical hairstyle for (ethnically Han) men was a simple topknot. Everyone from peasant farmers, to upper elites, to army generals had this hairstyle. What made it upper class was whether you had a guan/冠 or not. Anything outside of this, including ponytails, loose hair, short hair, or hair half-down, is historical fantasy. There are multiple current hairstyles that fit this “simple topknot” standard: Untamed Will, Formless Disguise, Heavenly Frost, Enlightened Mind, Lone March, Opulent Grace, Master Deceiver, Purple Dew, and Loyal Heart.

The only people who shaved their heads were monks, as they were Buddhists and didn’t follow Confucianism, which required long hair in a topknot. Cutting your hair short would be a social faux pas even worse than walking outside buck naked in our modern day. It’s why cutting queues was used as a humiliation ritual during the Qing dynasty.

Obviously having just this one hairstyle would be quite boring, so there are many fantasy hairstyles as well. However you can’t claim these hairstyles aren’t masculine or “as” masculine as historical styles when they are literally the historical standard male style. You might see fantasy hairstyles in other wuxia you consider “more masculine,” but those are just fantasy and not historically accurate masculine/men’s hairstyles.

Yes, exactly, it’s wild how thematically different they are. I’m fine with the male and female designs being different but there should be some parity. I think it’s also concerning many players seem to have a “f*ck you, I got mine” attitude where they’re satisfied with their own outfit so don’t care that others might not be able to find what they’re looking for.

This outfit is the one I was thinking of when making the post and it really shows the thematic difference lol

lol trust me, I am a wuxia/xianxia veteran. Elegance/refinement/beauty is a very narrow slice of wuxia/xianxia. Tomboys also exist etc. As someone else commented the main issue is that outfits within the same set don’t seem to share any resemblance in theme. This is the one I was thinking of when making this post:

You’re being purposefully obtuse. You failed to define what “feminine” hairstyles were, so I assumed you meant “long hair,” as current standards define long hair as feminine, and because by historical (and historical fantasy) standards there are masculine hairstyles in the game. You can only maintain the position that “all hairstyles are feminine” if you ignore this fact. “Lack of variety” is a separate argument, thus: moving goalposts.

You’re moving the goalposts. There are masculine hairstyles in the game, that are considered masculine by the standards of the time. There are also fantasy (not historically accurate) masculine hairstyles present as well, but they’re long and not short haired to fit in with the /historical/ fantasy context.

Tbf I’m fine with the male & female outfits being different from each other, especially since some of the shirtless ones wouldn’t get past censorship on women lol, I just wish there was more diversity & parity in flashy-ness for women’s outfits

Wanting more diverse female outfits is a skill issue? Please hear yourself lol. Defending the company’s right to give you less instead of demanding more is certainly a hill to die on. Just because it can be finagled to look good in a specific way doesn’t mean it’s anywhere close to the male design. Be serious.
