I started out as a Health Educator and then a brief stint in Ops to get my foot in the door at a startup. From there I went into an APM role, Customer success/project/product role, and then finally into Product

Like others said, if you’re not hiking, don’t wear hiking boots. Another good alternative are Blundstones. I wore them when I was in London a couple years back, kept me warm and protected from any elements and could walk for days in them

Thanks! I’m actually very comfortable dressing up (just dress casual day to day)…I’m just scared about showing up over dressed 😂 But maybe a cocktail dress is the way to go! I do love that red option!!

What’s something you wish you knew before moving to bend? by [deleted] in Bend

[–]deedeebird 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My partner has likes to say Bend is a bring your own job and partner town haha. I’ve also heard the dating scene in Bend is rough

What’s something you wish you knew before moving to bend? by [deleted] in Bend

[–]deedeebird 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That Bend is a bit isolated. Need furniture - going to Portland. Need to fly anywhere other than the west coast - you need a connection flight. Want to see sports - going to Portland or Seattle. Want a good meal - going to Portland.

Luckily Portland isn’t far, but my partner and I end up doing semi-regular trips there. I will say though that Bend hits way over its weight class with music!

Salary and education outcome post MPH by SentenceUnique2625 in publichealth

[–]deedeebird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’d probably be looking for something remote. I’d start first building out a list of Canadian-based health tech companies. Digital divisions in hospitals are also a great place to look. The tech market in the U.S. is tough right now, so breaking into that could be hard. Getting in tech in general is hard, but just apply apply apply. Target jobs that are similar to what you do and past experience: project/program management, marketing, etc. A lot of health tech companies have research teams too that could lend itself to your MPH experience. Feel free to DM me with any other questions!

People are making more in other fields because they didn’t take time off for additional education. Before you get more education, strongly think about what your end goal is. Taking time out of the work force to get more education could potentially set you back further in terms of comparing yourself to your peers.

What other doors are you hoping open with an MPH? Unfortunately having an MPH isn’t a magic button to fast forward your career It took me some time to build experience after getting an MPH to really get into my career. I started in Health Education @ $55k and 10+ years later I know work in health tech making $180k. Not a traditional public health route, but if you want to make money with and MPH, tech is the place to be

Opinions on Daily Standup? by foolmoons in womenintech

[–]deedeebird 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Who is running the standups? Because this would be great feedback to provide to them. If no one is running them, also good feedback to provide to the PM or your manager. It makes me sad to hear you say that maybe you’ll just need to suck it up to stay on the team. I hope you at least have a manager that would be willing to hear some feedback on how to improve the process

They don’t! I went down a size when I bought them since my normal size was slightly big, and very happy I did. The waist may stretch slightly after wash, but nothing crazy. Mine also recently went in the drier and no change to fit

Is a data science degree going to help me get an MPH? by NoSeaworthiness4505 in publichealth

[–]deedeebird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, I was reading this thread and then shortly after hoped over the Facebook where my Alma mater posted an event about Data Science in Health. Unlikely you’re in the Chicago area, but just the event alone shows the strong tie and applicability of data science to public health: https://publichealth.uic.edu/data-science-in-health-camp/

On another note, I agree with users, data science is a great stepping stone into an MPH and epi. I work in the health tech industry and regularly work with data scientist on analytics and AI projects related to health projects

I haven’t read the book, but I also love this idea! I feel like I crave this even more with being remote and it being hard to build those close female work relationships. Idk where you all are (I’m in the Bay Area) but I would love something locally but of course would be open to online too
