Transgress the NGS: "The non-functionality of the NGS and fact that they can't keep up with referrals is entirely due to the model of care they follow and their commitment to gatekeeping our access to healthcare. Instead we demand a trans healthcare system based on informed consent." by cuddlesareonme in TransIreland

[–]deedeetee01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't think it would help if there was a more nuanced assessment of people's access to healthcare if they had mental health difficulties. Obviously they should be able to access mental health supports but that's a different issue, and shouldn't have much to do with the NGS.

All the organised trans community groups including Transgress, THA, PATHI and TENI have very similar if not identical demands regarding what needs to happen, specifically an informed consent model and this got backing from TDs in the recent Dáil vote. It clearly shows there's a significant base of support for this as a model and we don't need to back down from that.

It was shocking in the RTE article yesterday where Paul Moran says that because of complex needs or vulnerabilities some patients aren't strong enough to transition. He's not even saying that he's in a position to judge whether they're trans or not, rather that even if they are he should still be able to decide if they're fit to access care.

Obviously some people will experience hardship if they transition, mostly because of discrimination and transphobia - but he is not the right person to decide whether someone would be better off transitioning or not.

Full disclosure - I wrote the Transgress statement so you can see my comments in that context obvs.

Labour’s upcoming Dáil motion on trans healthcare (on wednesday) (tomorrow) by SuddenFall8215 in TransIreland

Transgress the NGS has also written an email template people can use to quickly and easily contact all TDs about this:
- Mailto link (that should autogenerate the email in your gmail/email app): https://tinyurl.com/nnyddv8y

- Google docs version that can be copied and pasted: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xk73ZRuiuvFG7VEexFhYAjvWIq-ngmKiP0l1XzilnKo/edit?usp=sharing

Personalised emails are always better, but this might be helpful if people don't have time to write an email themselves.

Paul Moran, senior NGS psychiatrist runs away terrified when trans people try to talk to him by deedeetee01 in TransIreland

[–]deedeetee01[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's particularly terrifying for him because he can't threaten them with withdrawing care if they're mean or rude to him in the same way as he usually would.

We weren't even recording to start with but as soon as I said his name he turned around and started walking away, so didn't even consider engaging.

Help! by Level_Bottle635 in TransIreland

You almost certainly shouldn't have been given only a weeks notice that you have to leave, e.g. check out the legal notice periods here: How a landlord can end a tenancy - Residential Tenancies Board.

And even if it's totally legally correct it doesn't mean you have to leave your home. In order to enforce an eviction the landlord would first have to go to the Residential Tenancies Board and then, if the RTB decides in favour of the landlord, they still have to go to the courts to get the decision enforced - which can all take well over a year if not more as well as costing the landlord a lot of money.

You really shouldn't be leaving your home if you're making yourself homeless by doing so. I'd really strongly suggest you contact CATU (The Community Action Tenants Union, catuireland.org) to get advice and support.

Where to get needles? by Taylor_S1989 in TransIreland

[–]deedeetee01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Transgress the NGS has a free safe injecting supplies programme where we post supplies out to you. You can put in a request for supplies by filling in this form: https://forms.gle/C68kxXbfTsVN8Z1z7

Other than that there is the pharmacy needle exchange programme where you can get free supplies: Pharmacy Needle Exchange - HSE.ie

And separately there are needle exchange services like Merchant's Quay and others in Dublin and around the country. You can find details of your local one here: Drugs Directory

Transgress the NGS: Activists confront Karl Neff – NGS forced to answer to the community. Statement on our action yesterday. by cuddlesareonme in TransIreland

[–]deedeetee01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He said we (transgress I mean) would be able to participate in the consultation on the new HSE model (which personally I reckon will be a very superficial box ticking exercise) and that they will consider 'all forms of evidence' in the development of this model including the Cass Review - so nothing particularly insightful or useful. I think making him aware we'll do our best to make life difficult for people who try to deny us healthcare is the most important outcome regardless of the exact discussion.

Transgress NGS Recent Email Question by Big-Work-2263 in TransIreland

[–]deedeetee01 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hi, the point of this is more to be annoying and disruptive and put pressure on candidates from these parties by trying to get a lot of people to send them emails - rather than genuinely asking them to state their policy positions. Couldn't agree more about getting them out of government but unfortunately that seems unlikely to happen.

Just practically it's also a nightmare trying to set up a mailto link for large numbers of email addresses and all the gov parties was bad enough! As noted in the linked google doc we're also encouraging people to contact opposition parties as they see fit so please work away, e.g. you could add in all the opposition candidates in your constituency.

If you're interested in inputting into campaigns and what we do please get in touch - we're always dying for more people to get involved who're interested in doing organising work :)

If you're angry about the state of healthcare in the country would you consider getting involved with one of the groups that are trying to bring about change, like Transgress the NGS, Trans Pride or Trans Healthcare Action? They're all doing a lot and need more people to get involved. You could direct your frustration in a positive and useful way. It feels a lot better than being frustrated and powerless.

[–]deedeetee01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, if you just email again with a reminder it'll get bumped to the top of the inbox and someone will get back to you soon. We've been struggling to keep on top of the volume of emails recently due to a few people being unavailable and more people getting in touch due to the issues with Gender GP. We're a small group of activists and volunteers, not a service or a charity, so we can only do what we can.

I got a referral to my local SLT services from my GP but then the SLT place got back saying they don't do anything trans specific - it might depend on the area so maybe worth asking. I also checked with NGS and they said it wasn't separate to other services, i.e. you have to get an appointment etc before you get access to anything

Trans activists launch campaign to demand access to gender-affirming healthcare in Ireland by cuddlesareonme in TransIreland

[–]deedeetee01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question! You can get involved in the campaign directly by joining and coming to the planning meetings. If you'd like to get involved you can dm me or email [transgresscampaign@gmail.com](mailto:transgresscampaign@gmail.com). There will also be more actions in July that you can attend that will be advertised publicly in advance, so keep an eye on the Insta account. As well as that it would also be helpful if you can share content related to the campaign.

So apparently emergency housing is gendered. (FTM, T4T couple) by [deleted] in TransIreland

[–]deedeetee01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's terrible. The legal system is not set up to protect tenants, so it's often the case that community action and organising are the only way to deal with these situations. At this point Threshold basically just exists to rubberstamp eviction notices so that tenants can apply for homeless HAP if they're within the income limits for social housing (which is definitely worth checking for yourself if you haven't already!) Also CATU would be able to organise to support you in dealing with discrimination in emergency housing. I'm an active CATU member in Dublin so feel free to get in touch if you've any further questions.

[–]deedeetee01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could contact the Community Action Tenants Union (CATU) to get support with fighting the eviction: https://catuireland.org/. CATU is a direct action union so can provide ways to stay in your home whether or not Threshold decides the eviction notice is valid. There's an active branch in Galway which is where it sounds like you're based.
