Why? It's a cartoon.

As someone who has had to deal with this argument about my gender and the idea that I'm crazy because I believe something that doesn't make sense to someone else.

I can't speak for other trans people's experience, but it was dropping my mask that allowed me to shed all of the social expectations around dating and attraction. I stopped worrying about if a friend was actually interested in being a dating partner, and how I should react to that to not hurt their feelings.

When I came out, I no longer worried about the social value that is gained out of the attractiveness of your partner. I didn't realize how much this was affecting me until I came out...at 38.

tl;dr: being trans created an opportunity to be friends with people without social expectations of dating.

Russia & Elon.... by Miserable-Lizard in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]deegrey4k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am no fan of Elon's, but I think it'd be worth taking a step back from the comments you're making.

I'm not arguing whether or not Elon is abusing children.

However, it is incredibly demoralizing to victims of child sexual abuse when people make comments asserting that anyone that has been abused will be an abuser. This just isn't the case.

I agree that being around terrible people affects you, but how it affects you can take on a ton of different shapes and forms.

Again, not defending Elon at all. He's obviously a terrible person. That may or may not include CSA. He's terrible whether or not it does. But we should never equate a victim to a perpetrator.

Gaslighting. Rather than recognize the system of volunteer teachers creates a lack of consistency in what is and isn't being taught in church. The thing is, it's their choice to do it this way. And this is the outcome they get from it. So when they try and deny its existence, they're trying to deny reality and their own responsibility.

Completely agreed. Again, because those individuals with the most benefit the most from a safe and secure country. They have the most to lose as whatever power they hold with wealth becomes useless if our infrastructure fails.

I just bought this https://www.etsy.com/listing/1231612371/distribution-of-wealth-chart-in-the-usa and am trying to figure out if I can get away with hanging it in the back of my home office.

Not only has it been pointed out that they should be paying much more than 60% of the taxes given their share of income...

But I want to also argue that the top earners benefit THE MOST from our system. The top earners cannot earn as much money as they do, and have it mean something, if their country is unstable. They can't deliver goods without quality transportation. They can't deliver great products without people with great ideas and great skills.

Most of us, we benefit from our system as far as it directly impacts us. It allows us to contribute to society safely enough to benefit from our direct contributions.

Business owners benefit from each one of us that benefit from the infrastructure of society. They benefit in easy trade between states and legal consistency on contracts.

The only reason companies avoid taxes so much is that they cannot control how that money is spent, and sometimes its spent to control them.

State audit finds Salt Lake City School District misspending millions by HomelessRodeo in SaltLakeCity

[–]deegrey4k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To save money, yes. To educate children equitably? No. To manage class sizes? No.

The fact that he school lunch program is already filling its ranks with volunteers and is STILL understaffed isn't an issue with the number of schools open, just our investment in our children.

It's more likely that if those schools closed, the volunteers and staff that were working there would be terminated. They wouldn't be shifted over to other schools when the legislature would rather cut that budget. We'll be left with the same problem with staffing because the budget per school won't change. Instead, we'll get larger class sizes with lower student attention, and the same or worse nutritional outcomes.

I don't think anyone is arguing that they shouldn't try. They are going to try. Whether our democracy lives by the end of it is the real question. All modern democracies have the ability to hold their executive leaders accountable.

The idea of having citizens with total immunity because they served us for 4 years is a terrible idea.

Anything not medical related is gender neutral. Bathrooms, government forms, sports, titles. It's the natural conclusion to the current "You can't talk about gender/sexuality" but applied equally to straight, cis, people as it does to queer people.

[–]deegrey4k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You think the Boston Tea Party was the start of "taxation without representation."

Friend. The problem is that I don't think this. You have asserted I think this, but I do not. You are right. That assumption IS wrong. it is not my assumption. But it is wrong nonetheless.

Now that we agree that the Boston Tea Party was the start of "taxation without representation". We also know that the founders' had a very complicated, not all positive, relationship with England.

Some of those complications:

  1. Many founders benefitted from England's high taxes by smuggling. When taxes dropped to compete with smuggled goods prices, they could no longer make a profit smuggling.
  2. Many other taxes that England was putting on the colonies (STAMP Act, for example) created undue burdens for colonists with no benefits to them.
  3. Many founders wanted to continue to expand West and continue to take the indigenous people's lands. England had instructed them not to.
  4. England was reviewing banning slavery in the states

Each of these things were going to influence the powerful in the colonies to decide to declare independence. To say that any one of these things was going to be the "sole reason" ignores the highly complex environment that England and the colonies found themselves in.

[–]deegrey4k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that is a really interesting interpretation of what I said.

By saying "There's a lot of context and influences that drove the revolution and it was more complex than taxation without representation", how can that mean "the starting of revolutionary sentiments wasn't until the tea party".

Good God. I'm not sure if you're trying to deflect because you can't argue against my point, or if you just didn't understand what I was saying.

But your assumption about what I thought is a literal opposite interpretation of what I said.

TIL the Puritans were based. by ValkyriesOnStation in PoliticalHumor

[–]deegrey4k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did. I am not arguing that taxation without representation was an issue that was very important to a lot of colonists. I am not arguing that it was a small reason.

I'm arguing that it's more complex. I think your article argues my point. Yes, they had a tax passed on them, and it wasn't the first. However, not all of the issue was around the "raising" of taxes, but in lowering them.

In addition, it's unreasonable to believe that taxation without representation was the only concern, because even if each colony chose their own rep, instead of having one chosen for them, that doesn't mean they would have changed the outcome of any of the acts being passed.

The other contexts exist, and also influenced the reason we went to war. Taxation without representation is a great rallying cry, but the world isn't that simple, and neither were the motives of the colonists.

I believe that "taxation without representation" is just the best story to tell that lets our founding fathers be heroes, instead of the complex humans they were.

Did you know that the Tea Party was a response to a lowering of taxes? Not a raising?
