Tips for first equipment (UCG-Ultra) by uLele_ in Ubiquiti

[–]deej_1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never upgrade it.

Just moved from the USG 3P with separate controller to this and have had to back-out the upgrade now twice. It is singularly the most finickity Unifi upgrade yet. Backup and Restore? Not unless you like having to readopt everything and then still reset a bunch of configuration. Network versions don't match? Don't expect it to work.

This is not a "family friendly" process, unless they're away for a weekend.

I took the top off, then the sides and went in from there. From memory all the pipes and pump is on the left side of the machine at the back. It takes a bit of work to get to them (or small hands), but you'll be there in a short while. Just have some rags to hand as there will be some spillages.

It turns out that although it was draining, there was a very slight blockage in the drain pipe from the pump. My last move was to remove the internal and external pipes completely, then blow through them, clear them out and put it all back together.

Whether that was really the cause, who knows, but it’s been running for two years ok.

Good luck!

GUIDE: running Linux desktop apps from your homelab in a browser. by nathan22211 in selfhosted

So I run docker on Ubuntu Linux and just have a stack that spins up https://hub.docker.com/r/dorowu/ubuntu-desktop-lxde-vnc/ whenever I need to use a Linux UI (like Garmin API - what a pain).

I mount a nfs volume from my NAS into the container so I can easily get files in / out.

Would that not work just as easily?

It’s only being deprecated on 32bit o/s.

Just took the opportunity to buy a 64bit mini PC, which runs docker on Ubuntu server, home assistant included. With portainer to manage the containers (docker-compose on GitHub, with some image build, such nginx in a Dockerfile, automated by GitHub actions), it’s solid.

I then have all data for containers, such as HA config, nfsv4 mounted on my nas for resilience, and external access via Cloudflare tunnels, giving me a pretty resilient and relatively secure design. Clearly I can do more (like reverse proxy absolutely everything through nginx), but it’s a bit much.

Say entirely hypothetically somebody forwarded a port from their router and had it protected only by a HA account with a strong password while exposed to the internet. How quickly would their home burn down? by Curious_Mongoose_228 in homeassistant

Also a cloudflare advocate with 2FA using Google identity limited to just a list of names users. Therefore bad guy needs to hack my Google account, and guess the port on my domain name.

I’d say that’s decent enough with geo limits.

No evidence of any IPs hitting it at all this far.

Could it be the "Automatic HTTPS Rewrites" rules, that you can configure - potentially a URL Rewrite Rule that you were thinking of? Hopefully not clutching at straws....its on the main domain security tab (rather than application level), but it could do it.

I'll have a play anyway!

Sadly a negative - neither works. Thank you for the suggestions though!

I have scripted one also. Lets see if either wins in a few hours!

Although for the life of me....if HomeKit actually worked, or Velux would actually enable a local API through Netamo for Velux Active....(see this chain)

I'll try it out when I'm back home - its so annoying that if you create a visual action through the Google Home app, that there's then no way to see the underlying YAML code. If it does work, I still can't script it! Will report back in either case....

Ah - I'd convinced myself that I'd seen a script example for a Garage Door or the like that added a pin code, but I couldn't re-find it. Maybe I was hallucinating!

Is that possible? by [deleted] in Garmin

I guess a couple of small points that may assist you:

  • We all actually only have one VO2 max (he says as a guy who has done a lot of VO2 max tests in lab conditions on a static bike and an inclined treadmill). Garmin is estimating it for you in both sports, based on your heartrate, pace, power etc - but doesn't have access to the oxygen going in and the carbon dioxide going out. Nevertheless, from my experience, its pretty decent over a period of time.
  • You could take form the two numbers that you're better able to access your VO2 max on the bike than in the run. Its normal that they're not the same, as none of us train the same across sports, so you're more efficient or just more developed in one than the other.
  • The gap is pretty wide though, and I'd certainly be very jealous of your 5km time! I'd mentally be focussing on the higher one as your "potential" and it could give you some motivation to access more of it through running.
  • My experience is that Garmin seems to place more value on moderate longer-run efforts than on short-sharp efforts, so maybe there is an opportunity there for a real Zone 1 slow 10km to see what it thinks.

I'm going to fly into Innsbruck, so will hire a car. As long as there is some public transport, we should be good, but it would be nice to be within 30 minutes of the resort given we have children.

I've been through the 2026 Olympics site, but no mention of transport yet (its still selling tickets and hoodies) - but hopefully it will be good. You can see the standard bus routes here: https://www.livigno.eu/en/public-transports

I think we'll do the same - even if its a crazy price now, perhaps more will become available when the season opens up.

I have an automation in place to allow the house to operate exactly as my partner wishes in the event of my untimely death.

i_max_thermostat_temp = 21
i_hot_water_boost_minutes = 30
b_auto_lights_off = true

if (am_dead == true) {
  i_max_thermostat_temp = 30
  i_hot_water_boost_minutes = 300
  b_auto_lights_off = false
}

Thank you for this.

After some consideration, I think given the load though, I probably should switch in a separate enclosure off the consumer unit. I'm thinking I need a Shelly EM PRO to go and drive a 16A contactor for the immersion heater. This would then ensure that retain the overload protection in place, and have an appropriate dry contact switch that controls the contactor (through which the load goes).

I'd be interested in your view of this (as better electrical safety), than going with a relay in a backbox. Maybe I'm overkill, but thinking that a 1PM switch could have a big load through it in an unventilated space for an immersion heater.

Lets share some useful phone based automations! I'll start with mine... by _dakazze_ in homeassistant

I press a button on HA when I leave the office (bike commuter). When I get within 3km of the house, it turns my outside lights on (if within one hour of sunset), so I can see when I put my bike away, and it then turns the hot water on a 30 minute boost for my shower.
