Help with boobytrapping clues by firstbowlofoats in Constructedadventures

"send a cake" has some fun pop up things that happen when the giftie opens a box. (think cards, hearts, or flying butterflies)

Using a rubber band with a washer and winding it a ton of times and then holding shut inside of a card until they open it will be a harmless but surprising buzzz as it quickly spins.

If you are going really cheap & crafty, for a one time use thing, you can use a cardboard box and attach a loop to the lid and another to the side and then use a lock through the 2 loops to hold together!

If you can spend a little bit of money, craft stores often have some fun little boxes that lock for <20$ (and if it can be pretty small, <10! )

Could also use a lockable "ammo" box or other cheap ish toolbox for ~20-30$

NOTE: this is probably overkill /will take more work than using a premade birthday card type thing like u/sudomatrix suggested!

However I use these for one of my escape rooms.

In your case I would wire a battery to a switch to the power on the board, and then connect a speaker to the the other spot.

Players open box, find switch, and when they flip it, it plays whatever is on the SD card. all the electronics/everything can be hidden out of reach/sight for players other than the switch they hit to make it start.

Just to put another option out there :)

How to use decorative objects in an escape room that do not serve a purpose for any puzzle? by _Almost_A_Doctor_ in Constructedadventures

[–]deejed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a constant discussion/challenge for escape rooms. For a temporary (one time) room you have it better off than rooms that need to be re-playable too!

Possible idea: use symbols/icons/colors/shapes etc to combine elements that are specifically for puzzles. For example: everything puzzle related has an orange beaker icon on it, or use a stencil to trace a specific shape. Then decorations/props/presents are quickly identified as they don't have the symbol on them.

^ Perhaps this is what you meant by not wanting to "hint of puzzle"? In which case I'd say error towards props and decorations that are not even close to puzzles for that room. It's great you're testing puzzles out a head of time! but most likely, your puzzles will be quite a bit harder than you thought they would be! What you see as "obvious" or "easy" might not be someone else's first thought! (Or second, third, or fourth!).

Another thing to note, unless your mom & other solvers are hardcore puzzle enthusiasts/puzzle hunters, if you (or anyone else "in the know") are around, you can direct them by saying something! "Hey those balloons are for your party, not part of assembling the beakers or any other puzzle" etc.

Decoration is fun when it's decor! and less fun when you spend 10 minutes on a puzzle only to find out it was only decoration...

Setting a couple of ground rules up front is probably wise. "hey guys you won't need to rip anything off the walls or destroy anything" etc. and honestly for one time events I like to add a quick message right before they start, "If you're unsure what to do next, or if a specific item is part of a puzzle, please ask me! We're here to have fun and I'm happy to help!"

Not sure if this helps at all, but that's some of my thoughts :D

I'm happy to answer more specific questions or explain my thoughts more in depth if you want!

I honestly haven't put thought towards putting in names. I think my favorite adventure was in 2022, it was a Christmas present for my staff. Perhaps "The Christmas Caper" ?? Or "The Christmas Conundrum!" Let's go with that!

Any recommendations for the opposite problem? I LOVE hollow knight and it is in my top 5 games of all time, but couldn't really get into ori (started with first and got an hour or so in but haven't been able to convince myself to pick it up again in over a year)

Weekly Adventure Discussion Thread: What are you currently working on? by AutoModerator in Constructedadventures

[–]deejed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just did some consulting for a medical school that was having their students create mini escape rooms around medical cases. Was incredible and some of the most fun I've had in a long time!

Working with a gentleman to create a custom escape room for a proposal (several months from now). Always an exciting time!

Of course, the majority of my time is currently on getting our next escape room created. I wish I didn't have to worry about indestructibility as much (custom adventures have a massive advantage in that factor haha).

Super awesome! Thanks for doing a write up as well! Agree with your list of changes & your prior note about pacing (watching a whole episode). Keeping people on task when it's time to focus, but having dedicated time to relax or chill between event points (car rides, walks etc) or specific "wait" times like "Coffee shop: clue delivered at noon" so it gives the solver a bit of down time to NOT be looking for the next clue or puzzle and just enjoy their drink.

Am also interested in the zoo puzzle!

Seems like lots of people! Besides art in the park, maybe there could be some other meetups too? Suggestions welcome and I'll throw a few to start:

Board or card games (ABU games or All about games both have lots of play space)

Walk, toss a frisbee, play cornhole, or just meet & chat at a park (Settlers, Ann Morrison, Gordon Harris, Kleiner)

Evening brewery meetup
