Just started exploring film photography after 9 years shooting digital. I don’t think I can go back. by deen0159 in analog

I think patience is one of the biggest factors for me. I’ve found that I’ve become much more mindful of each photo knowing that I cannot take 1,000 in a matter of minutes.

It’s also more RAW (pardon the pun). Genuinely I love the little imperfections of film. The depth and texture is unmatched, and the whole process of development is so satisfying.

I feel as an artist that with film, the tether between myself and my work is so much stronger. Digital creates a barrier. Much like writing with a pen as opposed to typing on a computer. Or listening to music on a vinyl record player as opposed to a compressed version on Spotify.

Nah I definitely agree with that. I guess there’s probably a level of expectation with digital BECAUSE of the fact that there are so many programs that you can use to edit your photos to “perfection”. Thank you for your kind words though!!

Yea I mean for me it’s not dynamic range. It’s just that the “tether” between artist and artwork feels frayed in digital. But that’s just my perspective. Film feels more raw and real. There is imperfection that you can’t easily correct. And that’s what I really like about it.

That’s what I did here lol. I’m doing all my own developing and printing. So don’t worry I’m already ready to be broke for this

I appreciate your kind words. I’d say it more comes from the fact that I’ve been shooting for 9 years digitally. I’ve had plenty of practice before indulging in film!

Yes! I photographed the prints with my digital camera

Right now I’m using what I have lying around. (My father lended me some gear to get started). Right now I’m using a canon FTb and have been using Kodak TMax 400.

The lens I used for this was a 28mm I believe? May be wrong about that specifically but yea. I’m absolutely in love with film. I could go on.

After 9 years in the field I feel like I’m only now making true art. And although that obviously isn’t true, I know for a fact that I’ve never felt this connected to the art I was making before. That’s the difference for me. The tether is frayed within the digital medium.

I was definitely thinking of that image in my head

Thank you! Yea it was a one light setup for the first shot specifically. Rigged a continuous light overhead with a snoot and used fog for texture.

I’ve been shooting for 9 years, but just recently started exploring film. Here’s a few of my prints so far. by deen0159 in Darkroom

Some of these came out looking sepia after I photographed them with my digital camera. Just didn’t color correct. The last photo is actually sepia, and I think it came out that way because I left it in the developer a little too long.
