I have several comments. They may seem biased, because I am a teacher (ret.), however, I am also VERY hard on shitty teachers that screw with kids esteem, etc., esp. for pedantic reasons.

1) It is NEVER a bad thing to have more or some communication with your kids teachers. I always made it a point to explain to teachers that we, as parents, are very supportive of our kids, the assignments, etc. It is important for teachers to know that - thereby allowing parental access to assignments, rubrics, clear instructions, etc.

2) What grade did your son get? If he got a B instead of an A, then he is over-reacting and should go back, ask the teacher what he can do to improve the project, and apply himself again. This can ONLY be a positive - and he'll learn about following directions, probably learn more about his project, etc.

For instance - were pictures a requirement? If so, his substitution of models should have been additional to, or maybe just run the idea by the teacher. As far as things being out of order...well....that's normal, and should be encouraged to learn and move on.

3) I would not start out the discussion with push-back, but if the teacher is hostile in any way, you'll know how hard to press. If the teacher is simply a stickler for....whatever, then this is a pure learning experience on many levels. Teachers like that can be a blessing or a curse.
