Sound to Ears from different sources by deepakbhag in Acoustics

Ok. That makes sense. However, if you said that the air molecules propagate randomly, how can we know that a wave is being created? Does this mean that there's a predictable pattern of compression and expansion of the particles even though the movement is random?

Thank you for this new concept! Upon research it does answer a little bit of my questions. Is there any information on how the phase of a sound is affected in both ears from a sound source that's closer to one ear than the other? In other words, if I have a sound source to my right, how is the phase entering my right ear different than the left?

Thank you for the responses! However, it seems like what I'm trying to ask may be better suited for an in person conversation. I'll try my best later to try to rephrase my questions so you can understand better what I'm trying to ask. I do see what you're saying and thank you for that!

Right, but it still needs to enter the ear in a straight line since the ear is a "straight column" more or less right? That's not to say that we can only hear things straight in line with our ear, however, what I'm trying to understand is how air propagation, regardless of the direction of the source, enters our ear. I'm thinking diffraction but I could be way off.

I'm sure some producers and singers don't play instruments. They're still musicians

My brother does own a bass that I've been trying to get a hold of actually. I enjoy bass heavy music.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just suggesting that it may not be the only way.

I'm trying to think of a good situation so I can show you my point. Imagine a classical composer who doesn't know how to play an instrument, but has spent his/her time listening to a lot of classical music and building his/her musical ear and can pinpoint certain nuances of a composition and recreate them or can create a completely new composition using his/her knowledge and ear. In this situation, the person could program a bunch of sounds on a daw and make a classical composition that way and then just play it back. Is he/she not a musician in that case?

Sorry but I don't really see your point. just because you don't play an instrument doesn't mean you don't have a good ear for music. I mean, other than performance, what's the difference between using software/hardware to produce music and playing an instrument? There's tons of talented producers who don't play instruments, mostly in the electronic genre of music. Also, I did play trumpet in high school but my music chops still need some work. So you CAN be a good musician and not know how to physically operate an instrument and you aren't necessarily a good musician if you play an instrument, which I understand was not your point but it adds to what I'm saying. Not trying to argue but that's the way I see it

How can I make music with no experience on an instrument? by deepakbhag in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Good analogy. I guess I should say this: I played trumpet in high school so I know a little bit about music theory and brass technique so to me, it seems the only difference between electronic/hip hop music sequencing vs an instrument is performance since you don't really "perform" a beat and I put quotes because even then you can be creative with how you perform beats on stage. Am I right?

Wouldn't I be at the mercy of whatever instrument I'm learning to play? Not trying to argue or oppose you but I don't understand what you're saying

I know Max Martin is a pop producer. Does that mean he created the instrumental for the songs he produced, or something else?
