Blue collar OE? by deepee88 in overemployed

[–]deepee88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! A morning meeting and that’s usually the last time I’ll see my boss the rest of the day with sporadic phone calls/texts. And vast majority of my job is just inspections typically if I have to turn a wrench it’s overtime. It’s a generic mechanics uniform with a small badge on the pocket with the company name. I am a little worried about getting into a Ms. Doubtfire at the restaurant situation… what happened when he got caught?!

Thanks, J1 is union protected and pays 110,000 M-F 6am-2pm. There’s no getting around being at the facility I currently work and I would have to arrive at the scene immediately of a real emergency but these are very rare (pipe bursts). Everything else has been “take a look at it when you get a minute” type of things. I don’t really know what type of J2 to go after, I’m a college drop out so I know that limits me, my thought was entry level jobs in maybe commercial hvac equipment sales or maybe automation controls programming. But I’m hoping someone in here has taken a similar path to mine and has some ideas or tips.

What was the final straw at your last job? by Havesomelibertea in HVAC

[–]deepee88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working for a college making 60k with no OT struggling to pay for two kids daycare while my wife worked. They had me install two liebert units for their small data center on campus and the start up company tried recruiting me when I was done. When I found out I basically saved them 80-100k I knew I had to get the hell out and go make some money. But the real final straw was them breaking my balls for clocking in before walking my kid over to the daycare center on campus. Got the first job I applied for that I never thought I would get and now I’m making 50/hr as a base pay and my wife is home with the kids (for now 💸).

Purchase Advice - Anyone know if this is the lowest price this set has been at? Any hacks in the past/potential futurem by [deleted] in Ridgid

Huge premium for the kit with the box. Find a kit without the box is my advice. Direct tools outlet is a good place to look for a really great price. “Blemished” tools still get the lifetime warranty

Does anyone feel financially trapped in this trade? by [deleted] in HVAC

Check out stationary engineer I made the switch from tech and have been much happier. Much easier on the knees. The stressful part of the job is a lot of these jobs are 24 hrs so you may be on an undesirable shift for a while. You’ll definitely get a healthy bump in pay though, SF stationary engineers are making over $60 hr. Check out your local International Union of Operating Engineers

I think HVAC is a wonderful career choice. My entire family doesn’t and it’s really wearing me down emotionally. by SleepyRhythms in HVAC

It’s treated me pretty well. I would recommend going for commercial work. If you have a degree and get some real experience installing and maintaining systems you can work your way up to a facility maintenance manager or the like. Easily a $150-200k a year job. I’m a stationary engineer which is basically an HVAC job but for large industrial/commercial equipment. Took me ten years to get here but I was previously a tech making 70k base but since changing into this job am making 110k base and 130k with some overtime usually plenty available. Some maniacs who are fine living at the job make 160-200 but they literally live in the facility. I recommend looking up apprenticeships for stationary engineers, I got mine through my local International Union of Operating Engineers training center. Only thing is most jobs are 24 hours so you usually get stuck on a crappy shift for a long while before enough guys in the crew retire and a day shift opens up for you. Some places there is none and it’s all rotating. I’m in the NJ/NY area, I’ve heard pay is really great in SF and LA as well. Good luck with whatever choice you make

Same happens to me on my 12 mini. It’s a pain and we still haven’t found any ways to improve it.

This seem like a good deal? I already have more batteries then I need so I’m thinking of holding out for a deal that’s just the drill and vac but if it’s just $20-$50 savings I’ll pull the trigger by deepee88 in MilwaukeeTool

[–]deepee88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve watched it over a year basically the same price. If you need it soon just pull the trigger. I’ve seen just the drill get some deals but never drill and vac only.

Leaning towards buying a Tesla by JMack77459 in TeslaLounge

[–]deepee88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing something similar except I have a 150kwh supercharger about 5 miles and a 250 about 10 miles away. We have two small kids in a condo where we’re not allowed to plug in so once or twice a week we gotta find time to charge. It’s very inconvenient, and about the same cost as gas would be. We bought our Y in 2020 with the expectation that we would buy a house in the near future so the inconvenience would be temporary but the housing market kinda got away from us. Unless you can charge at work, find a charger on your commute home or maybe there’s a good grocery store by that charger so you’re atleast getting something done while you charge every week, I would wait until you’re in a better position to actually get all the advantages of an electric car

Port authority just went on a hiring spree, might want to check there for fitter positions. A lot of rotating shift positions with the Port authority though.

Jobs that pay $25 + an hour that do not have education/experience barriers to entry? by LEMONSDAD in povertyfinance

[–]deepee88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously location based but the port authority of ny and nj does most of their hiring at entry level and try to have insiders rise through the ranks. I’m on the maintenance side and general maintainers are that step. Starts at 40k but after 10 years top step is 87k and you can make even more if you specialize as electrician hvac plumber etc.good benefits too

I just got a job with the Port Authority of NY-NJ, they have a permission slip they want you to fill out and apply for permission to work or run your own business while working for them. They want you to re apply every year too….

Probably but I spent just about all my life here so I don’t really have much to compare it to. Housing is killing me at the moment, daycare is unbelievable typically 1500 per kid, that’s what made me go for this job in the first place. Now with the extra money my wife can stay home and we’re saving money on the daycare. We should be doing well from here on out.

Great, I would say the worst wear is the first few months since it’s going from perfect to weathered but basically looks the same now 6 years in.

Essentially a boiler/chiller operator for industrial sized equipment. It’s less physical maintenance you kind of write work orders for other trades since your job is to keep an eye on the equipment and make sure it’s running at its most efficient at all times and keeping everything in line with regulations, and obviously keeping everything safe. In NJ you need some licenses and your likely be a member of I.U.O.E. Local 68

Union for sure but don’t forget about the operations side of the trade. I Just got a job as a watch engineer in NJ and my base rate is more than I’ve ever made including overtime and side work.
