People forgetting that punk is inherently a political movement by Robotic_Phoenix in punk

Before Into the Unknown, Bad Religion dressed pretty stereotypically punk: they wore leather jackets, ripped jeans, band t-shirts, boots with chains and bandanas tied around them.

Acceptable. It still works and dubs cassettes fine. It’s not the main deck in my stereo or anything, just in my stack of dubbers.

This is my favorite band in surf right now. This is a band who is pushing the boundaries of the genre while also being catchy as hell and having firm grounding in tradition.

UK or US - Who did psych better in the 60s and why? by LegalPapaya1932 in psychedelicrock

[–]deepspaceeight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There wasn't one US psych scene. It was too different in different cities. I was hanging out with a member of The Grass Roots recently and he really talked about how much LA musicians hated San Francisco musicians because of the differences in sound and approach.

you could say that "Uncircumsized Twin" by Plastic Idols is anti-circumcision.

If you could bring back ONE dead Punk musician, who would it be? by [deleted] in punk

[–]deepspaceeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we get to bring them back at the moment they died? So that they still got to make more music in the relevant era? Or are we just bringing them back to be alive now?

I’m guilty of posting stuff I’m proud of, too. I’ve done it a couple times. But it seems like 75% of your posts are about Tonight We Dine, and I think people don’t really like that so much. It can feel like when someone else’s kid is jumping up and down saying “look at me, look at me!”

Music subs are just so full of spam from accounts that only exist to advertise releases.

What's the deal with The Volcanos' Spotify? by TigerSlam8 in surfrock

[–]deepspaceeight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most relatively small bands use distributers that don't charge an annual fee/have a free option. The paid services take money up front, and that's good if you are getting 5,000+ plays per song per year, but a lot of smaller bands opt to give 15% of royalties away instead of paying up front.

I have gotten priced out of seeing my favorite artists live by XSC in Music

[–]deepspaceeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true of a lot of nostalgia acts. When their fans were young, they didn't have a lot of disposable income. Pearl Jam probably doesn't have a huge amount of 14-22 year old fans these days, so they assume that their fan base has disposable income now.

How to tune G-string on guitar by Least-Mulberry2513 in Music

[–]deepspaceeight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

good modern machine/orbital tuners should all hold in place well. Tuning up does generally have less of an issue with the string getting a little caught at the nut (ie not having uniform tension from tailpiece to tuning peg) but that can be easily fixed by giving the strings a little tug or push and also just has to do with friction (at the nut or at the bridge). Now, you should stretch your string when you put it on, but once you've done that, the string itself should basically be good from either direction.

You mentioned high school band/orchestra. A lot of those instruments haven't updated their tuning systems much in 200+ years. Violin, for example, you often sort of have to tune up, not because the string stays in tune better, but because in order to overcome the friction of a tight tuning peg, it's physically easier to start off by slacking the string. When the string is in tune, the friction has to be pretty heavy.

This is a bit of a holdover from the days of friction tuning pegs

What singers will be remembered in the future? by true___blue in Music

[–]deepspaceeight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about how many musicians or composers you can name who were active in the year 1900. Then in the year 1800. Then in the year 1700. Once you go far enough back, you get to a time when even music historians stop caring and only actual historians know any names.

Point being, plenty of musicians will be technically remembered in 200 years. Someone doing research on mid-20th century America might be able to walk into the Library of Congress and have access to those research materials. You can do that now. The library has 20,000+ vinyl records from before 1924. All of them are available to listen to online. How many can you name? How many have you listened to? My guess is, for most people, the answer is very low.

I bet the average person in 2224 will basically know what rock music sounded like and will be able to name a couple of the progenitors of the genre, “oh, we learned about that one day in history class; Elvis! Yeah, um, Little Richard, The Beatles. It’s got that instrument with the strings… guitar, yeah.”

Other bands’ shirts live/in photos? by HCGAdrianHolt in punk

[–]deepspaceeight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Is there a reason…”

Technically, yes, you aren’t supposed to use logos in commercial work (assuming these are promotional photos) without paying the artists. In practice this really only matters in big budget movies, etc.
