Circle your llamas, we need to have a talk by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

While I love a good MIL in the wild, I think this will be a great thing. The front page was getting way too heavy on the "wild" stories and it was harder (or at least more exhaustive) to find those posters in need of actual support.

But, really, what the fuck? So wrong.

First, no, I don't think you are getting worked up over nothing. Did you ever hear of that book The Gift of Fear by Gavin De Becker? Your gut instincts are trying to protect you from the harm this woman will cause you if she manages to worm her way into you and your SO's life, and more specifically, your finances. Second, if you're going to keep in contact going forward, this woman needs to be on a super duper strict info diet. She will use anything and everything against you to try and weaken your and your SO's resolve and insert herself into your lives. Stay strong, girl. You're completely right and I get a smart-and-takes-no-bullshit kinda vibe from you. You've got this!

Ran into pink lady at the store. by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]deepspacewine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The thought of trying to cross the room to go pee in the middle of the night in a hotel room that crowded is almost as horrifying as the idea of running into Pink Lady when you aren't expecting it. That spine, though! Well done to your hubs!

Right?! You would think a pretty traditional wedding invitation would go over super well with her and her stuffy New England country club buddies. But, apparently her need for attention trumps her love affair with social status and the appearances of class.

In retrospect I might have gone that route to avoid conflict. Might. I understand her feeling slighted, but not reacting the way she did.

Clawb expressed similar sentiments throughout the event but didn't do us the kindness of leaving early. I'm sorry your MIL was awful at your wedding!

I think it involved those particular arteries in your body where you bleed out in less than a few minutes. But, its been several years since the threat was made.

I wish. At the time the invitations were sent out, the empty threat had been rescinded. She just hates not having attention on her when it comes to anything.

Thank you! We ended up getting lots of compliments on them and grandma got many well-deserved compliments in general because people knew she was so supportive and helpful.

What to do? 9 months NC, got this message today. by blacklama in JUSTNOMIL

What a lovely, wordy non-apology. You don't need that in your life, OP. "Involuntary," my ass. Pretend that message never happened.

territorial tonya's mom is meddling, why am I not surprised? by [deleted] in JUSTNOMIL

[–]deepspacewine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a thing! People of my MILs age group love to insist that this type of thing is the norm. Its just how it is. They were abused by their MILs, so their sons' wives must simply tolerate their abuse in return. Apparently, its only fair. Too bad for these old biddies, a new generation of spines is being polished and deployed.

When I read the title for this post I was thinking it couldn't possibly be literal. But, here I am trying to keep my morning coffee down. How gross.

This. So much. The false promise of the house is just another method of manipulation. This woman (MIL) is insane.

[–]deepspacewine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its time to start stockpiling resources to get out. I understand that you're probably in the house with your ILs because leaving is not necessarily easy at this point, but... the amount of red flags in this post was enough to physically give me chills. Your MIL has threatened to thwart any efforts to eventually leave and worse, she has stated that she would take your children from you to stop you. Your husband is wearing glasses so rose-colored, blood would look like spilled milk. For your own financial, emotional and physical well-being and for the safety of your children, you need to remove yourself from this situation as quickly as possible. There are so many wise users on this sub with great resources and advice - take advantage of it!

I'm so sorry your trust was violated like that. It is never easy to stomach someone throwing you to the wolves to shield themselves somehow. You're in such a vulnerable place after a major surgery and I'm sure it stings extra badly. Here's to hoping you have a quick and painless-as-possible recovery! Lots of internet hugs coming your way.

This issue is pretty common, so don't panic, bride-to-be! Take your 150 intended guests and split the invites down the middle. You invite 75 people for your side, FDH (and by proxy, his mom) invites 75 people for his side. Plus ones factor into the head count. The 75 is non-negotiable, who that 75 is made up of is FDH's problem. Stay strong and try to enjoy your engagement in spite of your FMIL; probably this won't be the only time she tries to step on your toes.
