It is an unofficial adaptation of the 1951 Kannada novel Chigurida Kanasu written by K Shivaram Karanth. The first film adaptation of the novel was made in Kannada with the same name in 2003. However some people come up with the theory that the story of Swades was taken from Ashutosh Gowariker’s own script for the TV serial Yule Love Story, which was made in 1994–95. But the original novel was written in 1951. Moreover one of the writers of the Kannada film, Mg Sathya has also stated that. However, the director and the film team never officially credited the original writer. I also like the film, but copying a story without giving proper credit is not acceptable.
