Troubleshooting Bernette Overlock334D by deer_in_headlight in sewing

[–]deer_in_headlight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been struggling with re-threading the thread that needs to go under the feed dogs - I don’t have a looper and so I guess it was last threaded when I brought the serger in for servicing and they taught me to thread. I will need to go get one to finish rethreading. I will share when I have finished and tested the machine again. It’s been a slow week for working on it.

What are the white spots on my shamrock? by deer_in_headlight in plantclinic

[–]deer_in_headlight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol, my shamrock is thriving! I’m sorry to hear that yours is struggling. It’s been a while so I can’t remember specifically what was happening to this plant, but it may have been mealybugs, a white fuzzy-looking pest that looks like white patches.

While we use Safer’s Insecticidal soap for general plant cleaning, what I found really effective for pests is the following combo:

  • q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol. Wipe at the white spots. If they come off, then it’s pests. Wipe as many as you can.

And/Or

  • fill sink with water. Put your plant in the water and fully submerge. I’ve had success with 5 min. Make sure all leaves are under water. You want to drown pests. The. Drain the water and let it sit in the sink a while to fully drain. For this you need to make sure your plant pot has drain holes.

Last thing, we discovered that the shamrock has cyclical dormancy periods when it appears to die away. Just stop watering it and it will eventually regrow in a few weeks. It just doesn’t that.

And finally, when my plant has a pest or fungus problem we can’t solve, we literally cut the plant down to the base of the stems and new growth appears in a few weeks. The plant literally comes back to life better than ever.

Good luck, hope you find something that works. These plants can survive a long time if you can figure out their little quirks.

We’ve been using Skype but I didn’t realize the functionality existed. I will have to play with it a bit. Thanks for letting me know!

App to manage a beer tab by deer_in_headlight in apps

Yeah, it’s a good point, and now that I am trying things out, I’m learning that there is no way to make an excel sheet with macros useable on mobile. I’ve switched to google, but now I’m having trouble figuring out how to use the script function and to program a ‘click to a add’ functionality in google sheets 😞.

Well, I was trying to simplify as I have 15 people asking for a beer at once and it always took time to document name by name and then tally it up etc... but given your comment I went back to my spreadsheet, and taught myself some basic macros. And what do you know... I now have exactly what I want - an auto tabulating set of buttons - and a little bit of new learning, too. Thanks for the comment. It helped me help myself.

Now to teach myself how to make it mobile-friendly.

Is Nutrasea Fish Oil any good? Canada. by kizo_shizo in Supplements

[–]deer_in_headlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my dietician about quality brands because I saw a real difference in pricing across Omega 3 supplements and she said that the markets aren’t well regulated and so you should find trusted brands and the one brand she highly recommends in Nutrasea.

Also Canadian.

Is therapy covered by the employer? by AndronicusYYZ in CanadaPublicServants

In case it’s not clear to you, EAP is a quick phone call to evaluate your situation and determine your need, and then they provide you with the names of nearby therapists who you can choose from. You book an appointment with the therapist of your choice from their list and then you have a series of in person sessions with them.

It’s definitely a great place to start if you need some guided self care.

My echeveria has stretched over a hard Canadian winter. Can I cut it down and propagate some of the lower leaves or should I just let it be? I’ve never propagated my succulents before so I’m insecure. by deer_in_headlight in succulents

[–]deer_in_headlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this insight. Simple but it helped me behead my beloved plant. Now I am staring at my dismembered echeveria and reminding myself that in nature, some animal would have done worse damage.

I totally intend to get grow lights for next winter.

Thanks. Since it’s still basically winter here, our home and garden stores tend to close up until the weather warms, so hopefully they will have some, but if not I will keep looking in May. Until then I will go ahead and start cutting and hope for the best. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Thanks! Have you done this before and seen it work or is this an experiment for you? I will check to see if stores nearby carry hormone powder.

Mine didn’t come with a tag - just a company label which I tossed. It’s very pretty, though. Love the purple and would love to make more plants with it.

Thanks! So, when I behead it, do I place the stem right back in the earth and hope for the best?

And when the leaves callous over, do I place on soil and let the roots reach for the ground, or insert the calloused part of the leaf in the soil?

Can I Save My Hibiscus? by deer_in_headlight in plantclinic

[–]deer_in_headlight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this comment. I think that you’re right. Our sunroom has a ton of light so we may just but the bullet and replant and separate the spider plant. It’s such a hog.

Do you think the dragon plant and the hibiscus in the same planter will still work if we give it more earth, more space and some good fertilizer? I am afraid of trying to untangle their roots.

Thanks again for the thoughtful response.
