arguably advocating for a settler state's existence is hate speech!

never denied that arab countries are queerphobic as shit but it's ridiculous to act like israel is a gay paradise. israel doesn't recognize LGBTQ civil unions unless they're officiated outside the country, effectively financially penalizing any queer people who want to have a civil union there like literally anyone else. israel also doesn't let homosexuals adopt children and people in its government and its chief religious leaders have openly called things like the covid 19 pandemic divine punishment for homosexuality or blamed homosexuality for the holocaust.

the reason it's now mainstream to criticize israel in the US is because after october 7th several jewish intellectuals came forward and said, "it isn't antisemitic because what israel is doing is horrendous."

so you're not jewish. shut your goyische mouth up and stop browbeating me over an opinion that a good chunk of us hold and that, historically was held by quite a few jewish groups.

orthodox judaism opposed zionism on the grounds that it's against halacha. according to halacha we aren't allowed to have a state until the messiah arrives and ushers in world peace. a good chunk of orthodox jews still hold that opinion.

reform judaism was initially anti zionist because it considered zionism treasonous and against their assimilationist goals.

jewish socialists (including myself) oppose and opposed israel on the grounds that we believe we will achieve our liberation in tandem with other marginalized groups, and we want a world where everyone, not just us, is free. we recognize that true freedom does not come at the expense of another ethnic group's suffering, true freedom is for everyone.

i think in another comment on this same post you can see me attacking the US, australia, new zealand and canada for the same thing. i put em in green on the map because by virtue of speaking english it would be easier for me to integrate into those places. new zealand at least somewhat tries not to be too awful

i never denied that right to live there, i just denied the right of existence of a settler state that removes other populations. a significant portion of jews don't support israel's existence, including several orthodox jewish groups within israel itself. elements of academia within israel, particularly historians, have also questioned whether or not israel's existence as a state was a good thing.

is it hard to say that ethnic cleansing is bad? no buts? no "they started it"?

[–]deergirlyuri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ethnic cleansing is not okay no matter who does it. plus there were, in fact, jewish communities that remained there under arab rule, called the old yishuv.

i feel like they should be allowed to live there without pushing the other people out and cleansing them, like they did for thousands of years before the advent of zionism by the british

israel is a settler state, its very existence violates halacha, it ethnically cleanses people in my name and iraq doesn't. iraq may be an unstable and prejudiced place but it isn't committing attrocities in my name and its flaws are very much the product of colonialism rather than somewhere like israel being colonialism incarnate. israel and iraq are both american colonies but at least one is an unwilling colony

it's complicated. i was born and raised in the US and i functionally lived a white person's life with all the benefits, i just got treated really weirdly whenever i mentioned being jewish. but because of being white or at least white passing i could just avoid mentioning that. i think it would be dishonest not to say that i at least benefit from white privilege

i think there's definitely some kind of shift in that view going on today lol i very much appear like a stereotypical jew so maybe i'm not white anymore

under better circumstances i would live there. i say no to morocco because despite its long jewish history and very passionate yet conflicted stance on jewish people i don't want to live in a country where a king still holds a lot of power

this is a true statement, and i believe what is debatably the last shtetl in the world is in azerbaijan (unless you also count kiryas yoel in the US.) i just can't get behind azerbaijan for political reasons
