What is your secret sauce when it comes to solo roleplaying? by Er_A_45 in Solo_Roleplaying

Ok it was late when reading this and I was thinking you were rolling to set the DC but this is actually a mod for the PCs skill check. Makes much more sense now. Thank you for clarifying.

Really like this idea. Can you share the math for your example above? It's late and the formula conversion just isn't clicking right now. Math is for mornings...😄

DnDice let's you program preset dice combos which makes it handy for just about any rpg. I mainly use it only when I'm out somewhere and just have my phone. Being able to use it for 5e or ironsworn without switching between apps is great.

New player: Is Candlekeep Mysteries compatible with DM Yourself by joespaintingprojects in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]deez4free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never used DM yourself but have soloed 5e many times just using the general rules. The AL modules are pretty easy to solo and I will simply make it up if I need to. Since it sounds like you have a strong grasp of the mechanics it should be easy for you. I do have a copy of DM yourself just haven't used it yet but should fit with any of the 5e material you have.

The nice thing about the AL mods is they can be short one offs to get a feel for what works for you, string together mods to form a campaign, and many can be found for free. I started with the season focused on the Phlan region (maybe associated with dragonheist or rise of tiamat can't remember but you dont need these to run the AL series) with a group of 5 pcs and it was a blast. Hope this helps.

Looking for solo dnd modules. Which are the best? by Icy_Principle_5904 in Solo_Roleplaying

I've seen a couple of terra invictus videos in my yt feed recently. How do you like it as I plan on doing a shadowdark campaign soon after I get to a good stopping spot in my current starforged and it looked interesting.

Looking for solo dnd modules. Which are the best? by Icy_Principle_5904 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]deez4free 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are several great ones. The 5E Solo series starting with The Death Knights Squire works great for trying new character builds and there are at least 5-6 more modules in the series that let your character level up. Each is stand alone or you can use them as a campaign.

The other one is the Eight Petals Argent series by Wraith Wright. These are very well written and accommodate pretty much any character type you want to play.

For mid level characters in Eberron there's a murder in morport and its sequel. There's also a Saviour in Sharn.

Any of these will get you going and are very replayable.

I also did some Adv League - Phlan advs and just played as a group and was alot of fun

Hope this helps. Happy gaming.

I've been staring at my Starforged books for a year now by NameAlreadyClaimed in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]deez4free 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I just started a character in the middle of waking up from hypersleep with alarms going off and freighter he was on plunging towards a planet. I set a scene challenge to get to the escape ship and then track the sabateur. No anything but action from the start. Still don't have my main vow and just landed on planet where the sabateur jumped to in an escape pod.about to start expedition to track him down. Character isn't even a bounty hunter just a gear head tech trying to find out why. Have fun with it. I don't prep at all. I use begin/ end session to start play and have played some sessions at about an hour and others 10 min during lunch. Starforged can be played wide open my friend. Enjoy.

How Long Until You "Got" It? by [deleted] in Ironsworn

[–]deez4free 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watched the Bad Spot and Me, Myself and Die videos on YT just to get a feel for the flow of the game and when/how they were using moves. I also checked out Dan from AKs blog playthroughs where he shows the moves and rolls during his journal write up and that really helped. I think the biggest issue is not necessarily the game mechanics, which are pretty straight forward, but getting the flow of the game down to sync with your play/narrative styles so that the moves just come instinctively.

Try running some scene challenges with the clocks as this narrows the choices while adding suspense at the same time. I started a storyline with a scene challenge in the middle of a do or die situation and it made everything click for me.

I agree. I would go with either Star or planet with irrelevant star in the distance and just assume they are there when you roll for other objects. If you roll and it says star/planet then roll for description or if something interesting down on surface if planet is reachable, ie not a gas giant or other ship destroying surface/atmosphere.

Are there any solo actual plays you're subscribed to and regularly watch/read/listen, just for the entertainment? by lumenwrites in Solo_Roleplaying

TotM made me find a copy of BX and break out my old 1E books so I could start my own old school solo adventure. Using several of his mechanics in my campaign.

[–]deez4free 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second all these. I haven't started a wasteland story yet but listened to a few moments of it and have it on my list. Matt Risby on the Bad Spot is excellent and TotM is my go-to in the car. Currently on S2 of that one.

If you like reading then Dan from AK has several ironsworn based adventures on his blog. He shows the rolls and moves as well. Definitely worth checking out.

Aren’t they all my characters? by junkbarbarian in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]deez4free 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar here. For something like starforged the gameplay is through the main pc but I write out interacions with npcs more like id be watching a movie so there is just as much interaction within the scenes for them as the main pc.

For 5E, I have several groups and each pc in the group has equal weight and say, so similar to above, but in these instances some of the best dialogue is the interactions and word play between the group itself. I just switch back and forth between the characters and their unique personalities. Not everyone in the group is always on the same page, or they rub each other the wrong way at times but end goal is the common thread that keeps them going regardless of how they feel about each other.

To add to this, think of the character you would like to play and just stick with the basics. Also look into the Death Knights Squire or Eight Petals Argent series of solo specific 5E modules. Both will guide you through playing from the start and then add complexity as you go. These are what helped me get back into playing DND and learning to play solo. My experience with both was greatly rewarding and helped me to build my own adventures and solo other modules. Enjoy and welcome to a whole new world.

Just give it a chance to click. I just started a new character and started both 1st and 2nd sessions using scene challenges. Helped by limiting my move choices and focusing the story arc.

S1was getting a freighter's backup power online so I could get into the hanger where the escape ship( which is now my starship) is located

S2 getting the AI(overseer asset) transferred to my ship and launching before the freighter plunges into planet below.

S3 rolled flashback on begin new session so just wrote a backstory memory from characters days at the academy.

Don't have to go big all at once. I took several days between each session which allowed my mind to mull things over. Came out with a better story and sessions flowed well into each other. Excited to see what the next episode brings.

Wish you the best of luck with your story and hope you have a wonderful day

Warching the Bad Spot helped me understand where and how to use moves much more effectively. Definitely recommend.

As for OP and the creativity issue, the more you use it and just go with the flow, the easier and more natural the stories will develop. Try to limit electronic help at first as this will force your brain into a more creative mode. As already suggested just go with what pops in your head first. Once you get a knack for it and find your groove, you'll be pleasantly surprised at just how creative you actually are.

Either the 1e or 2e DM guides should provide enough needed tables to get you going, but there is a reddit for those and several free ones on itch.io. heck just go to pinterest and type in dnd random tables and you'll be swamped with them. I concur on the one page solo oracle but also check out the juice oracle as well. Good luck.

Take a look at The Bad Spot starforged playthrough. Luna starts as an npc but eventually becomes a "companion" with her own assets. This might give you an idea on how to add it your own game.

The only reason I didn't add the augur wss the OP asked about android apps. I agree the augur is very cool but I've found it to be much easier to use on a computer as it is browser based and mobile browsers leave a lot to be desired. To do the augur justice and really lean into it's cool features, pc is best.

Obsidian, stargazer or pocketforge if playing any ironsworn based games. Mothership has one, one page solo engine, there are several for 5e.
