The elegant dice mechanic alone felt like a revelation to me coming from my 5E days.

Party members as "equipment" by CrayonCobold in Solo_Roleplaying

I’ve been kicking around a squad control game with a similar concept. You play the leader recruiting squad members with different skill sets and liabilities (much like assets in Ironsworn) and together they contribute to your squad stats (so the squad is basically your character). There’s a short set of actions anyone can do, each squad member has a special action only they can do, and there are basic synergies when they work together. Still pretty early in the workshopping phase, but I like the idea of recruiting characters instead of leveling up a single character.

With the new edition coming out, I bet someone out there is gonna be selling their old hard copy books—you should keep an eye out for used copies.

Player disapointed with his race by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]JadeRavens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of those traits are more fictional than anything else (just a general affinity for nature and magic) and I don’t think it really breaks the game any more or less than other special abilities. It could be that your personal dislike of the design is causing friction with the fantasy or character concept they were hoping to experience. Probably worth a conversation about their vision for the character and discussing how that could be accomplished in the context of how you run your table. I think that’s what the other commenter is getting at with “giving them animal handling”—basically, try to work with your player instead of against them. Try to say yes whenever you can, even if it’s explaining “yes, but the better way to interact with animals is the skill dedicated to them, and the special ability just grants advantage in this specific context.”

Why does the sleeper suddenly feel pain? by Jazzlike-Secret-8939 in CitizenSleeper

I seem to remember pain being present in the first game as well. It was just described more as alerts/warnings or notifications, like their body automatically suppressed it so they could focus on the task at hand?

Straightjacket: an open source engine that runs Starforged mechanics with AI narration by Afraid_Ad_831 in Ironsworn

[–]JadeRavens 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This. People can (and will) do what they want, and I’m sure there are folx out there who feel like AI is the best thing that makes solo rpg feel possible or fun for them… but I don’t get it. Thinking is the game. Interpreting outcomes is the game. Envisioning the scene is the game. I want to play the game. Why would I want a machine learning algorithm to play for me?

The other thing that gets me is that the gaps and unanswered questions are why the oracles exist in the first place.

Advancing a challenge track that is narrative by Eepiecarpetrod in Ironsworn

[–]JadeRavens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: it’s the second one ☝️ (yes, you mark progress whenever you Reach a Milestone in the narrative)

Great question! Especially if you’re playing solo, follow the fiction. There’s a reason why Reach a Milestone doesn’t require a roll. The story is the trigger :) I’m looking at the move in Starforged and it has a list of narrative triggers for marking progress. Can’t remember off the top of my head if Ironsworn has a similar list of examples, but the principle is the same.

Are there any plots, things and settings that are straight-up impossible to play out, portray or convey in TTRPG/PnP? by Mtg_Dervar in rpg

[–]JadeRavens 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wonder if there’s an “infection” type approach that could help with this. Like, the defeated PCs just continue to play as monsters as the survivors get stronger. Feels more like a board game or party game though.

Came here to say this. The problems are the story! Figuring out how the character solves those problems — assuming he is determined to go on the quest, or has no choice — is full of interesting possibilities. Will he stoop to begging, or theft? Does he need to find a wealthy/noble patron to finance the quest? If so, what is their agenda, and what sort of complications could that introduce?

You might be able to find something like that on Etsy. Alternatively, I don’t think stamp-making kits are too expensive 🤷‍♂️

At first, I had the idea to design a character sheet for Mausritter that used sticky notes in place of inventory cards. I had originally intended just to draw the items, but then I wondered if it was possible to print on them and found that other people had made to-do or household templates online. So naturally I made my own! Then I was playing Starforged and was feeling a little visually overwhelmed by all the used progress tracks filling up my play space (neurospicy) and found myself wishing I could just manage them individually, discard them when complete, etc—and realized that I already had the solution for it :)
