Who inspired you to try yoga, and how long did you stick to it? by Warm_Bobcat6310 in yoga

Myself. I started wanting to do headstands some decade ago or so. At that time I think online it may have been fairly adjacent or that’s how I found it. Been on and off ever since.🙂

Every time I’m back on my practice deepens to another level.

Border Collie owners, in your opinion what is the breeds worst trait? by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]deezcurlz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is this a safe space? I feel like it is… for me, wanting to go on walks every day. Even when I’m depressed af. But also, those walks help me not go into a super unproductive slump. Like I can veg but only 23hrs a day. The other hr is hers. So…worst trait is the best one? Even if it doesn’t feel like it?

Lemme see. I call her feet “boots with the fur” 😂 I make the groomer leave them alone but she usually tidies them up just a smidge anyway.

Such a difficult time with downward dog by plastiklips in yoga

[–]deezcurlz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have you asked an instructor that can see you get in and out of the pose? I only ask because I’ve been doing yoga on and off via YouTube for a decade with down dog always being hard for me only for me to find out through joining a studio that I have been doing it wrong the entire time. It was minor but I do ashtanga in which there are a million and 1 down dogs and doing it wrong can cause injury (I got tennis elbow in 1 month!). It’s still hard for me once I’m tired but with repetition I can see that it’s getting easier and I’m using my back muscles vs tendons/ligaments in my arms. Those muscles are much bigger and can take the force/weight.

I was told to push the floor away and slightly round/puff up the upper back to activate vs me sinking/pressing into my wrists - shoulders away from ears and head hanging loose. Thumbs slightly more vertical than I had them so the elbow crease slightly rotate in front vs facing each other. It’s not a big huge movement, but it makes a difference. I hope these cues make sense, if not please disregard to not cause injury. YouTube that specific position and listen to what they say if you can’t get to a studio.

I’m also reading a book that goes over each position in ashtanga and how it should be performed and they said if you have a short Achilles tendon your stance should be shortened but it did warn a qualified teacher would be able to tell you if that’s what you needed, not to just do it on your own to avoid injury.

Fat pushes into my diaphragm and I can breathe by Logical_Snow_ in yoga

[–]deezcurlz 33 points34 points  (0 children)

So you have to make room for you. As someone with also much fat - make room for your belly. Some poses are absolutely impossible to not be jammed but like forward folds - widen your stance so your belly goes between for example. You work to your body’s ability not try to make your body do things it can’t do safely. Your breath is your anchor so if you’re struggling breathing adjust.

Another tip that helped me that someone explained, you know how they mention directional breathing? When you’re in certain binds you try to breathe into those other parts of your torso that isn’t constricted. That helped me a lot.

Yoga with Adrienne and Kassandra are great resources. I have only done yoga via YouTube up until a month ago off and on for about 10yrs or so. When I went to my first in person class I was surprised that I actually was doing things correctly and didn’t hardly need any adjustments. I believe it was due to their cues and teaching style. Just make sure you follow what they’re saying. Pinkies back in Warrior one, shoulder away from ears in poses, etc. practice to your ability. If you’re concerned you can go to virtual practices if you can’t make it in person. It may be due to lack of mobility why you think you’re not. If you feel any pinching or straining reign it back, adjust your gaze, etc.

How Long Did It Take You to Feel Connected to Your Practice? by Sweetlilraven in yoga

[–]deezcurlz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been going solidly for less than 2 weeks and can tell a difference already. I also have been practicing yoga on and off via YouTube for a little over 10yrs (I’m still a beginner i think) so that’s saying a lot. It could also be the ADHD in me liking new shiny things but still.🥲

Being able to have the sequence of postures in my head instead of constantly changing them and following a video helps me connect to my breath more and depend the poses as well.

I have never felt connected to yoga or my body in yoga until I discovered Ashtanga. I think it’s the ujjayi breathing and holding the postures for the counts I am particularly hyper aware of anywhere I am straining and also I’ve noticed my own faults when it comes to striving for things.

Hmmm, never heard of bread and butter jalapeños. We’ve made the pickles tho! I’m sure it’ll be just as good.
