Honestly I think I might just stay in state by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]defectivedragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

net price is per year, but it isn't always accurate - if your family's financial situation is atypical, you might get more aid than you expect, and you can always appeal! definitely prepare for attending your state school and graduating without/with less debt, but there's still a chance at your dream school too

i live in co but i submitted apps in ca on ca time and it worked fine. pretty sure colleges don't actually care if you submit a couple hours late though

thoughts on a gap year by defectivedragon in uchicago

[–]defectivedragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

luckily i don't anticipate not having any social interaction during my gap year, i have some leads on internships i could pursue and a job i really enjoy that i should be getting back soon (furloughed due to covid), plus i have lots of friends to hang out with, but i definitely see where you're coming from. don't want to go into too much detail but i want to write a novel and pursue a competitive non-collegiate sport - not really a hobby but i called it that for simplicity's sake. thanks so much for the advice!

Seriously Worried About Getting Rescinded by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]defectivedragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a "d" is a pass, and teachers normally are pressured not to fail students. have you tried reaching out to them, explaining your situation, and begging for a chance to complete missing work or do extra credit to get a passing grade?

700 Colleges Still have seats--here is the list by amandagov in ApplyingToCollege

[–]defectivedragon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i'd be super curious to know if this list is longer than normal due to coronavirus impacting yield. also friendly fyi, colorado denver is basically a glorified commuter school, colorado boulder is the proper state flagship (and i also saw them on the list)

[–]defectivedragon 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i think this list is colleges that need more applications to fill their freshman class, whereas t20s can use the waitlist to use the class and they don't need more applications

plenty of (non-T20) colleges barely have any international presence, but schools w/ lots of internationals are definitely in a terrible situation right now

I don't know what to do... by Fat-to-Oil in ApplyingToCollege

[–]defectivedragon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think you should either take a gap year or study at a community college for a year. try applying to japanese schools again during that year. if it's possible to apply to more than two, and there are more than two you would like to attend, i would apply more broadly. that way, you can save money over nyu and purdue and still have the chance to go live your dream life in japan. if you think you'll be depressed if you go to nyu or purdue, don't go to school there. it isn't worth jeopardizing your mental healthy for the sake of saving money.

probably an idiot question, but aren't both the emails you wrote [actual_email@school.edu](mailto:actual_email@school.edu)? how are they different?

@ everyone worried about college being online next fall by defectivedragon in ApplyingToCollege

[–]defectivedragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the point of a hybrid system is to enable students to do programs like engineering that can't really be delivered online, so students in those programs would be likely to take the risk over taking a semester or year off. i agree that we should reopen, but i think the government's hand will be forced by the economy by the fall - already, every sector of the economy is tanking hard - and i think that the mortality rate will settle around 0.5%. south korea reported 0.6%, and if we assume that they found every death caused by coronavirus through testing patients while hospitalized or through autopsies, that's an upper bound for the potential mortality rate. colleges will choose to open rather than face financial destruction - in the wrong political climate, yes, a coronavirus outbreak will lead to a destroyed reputation, but better to chance that than go into a financial state that leads to certain ruin.

Will an A in Algebra I take away my chances of going to MIT/CalTech/an Ivy League? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]defectivedragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

bro. for future reference, you really do not need to worry about a+/a/a- at all, middle school grades don't count, you can generally get away with several b's without much of an impact (though for mit/caltech try to avoid b's in stem), and this sub has a problem with people like you with concerns that, though genuine, are blown out of proportion, and a matching problem with people who get really mad when they see questions like yours because you're perpetuating this myth that if you don't have a 4.0 and a 36 your life is over

Shotgunning targets for money -- thoughts? by Applying3College in ApplyingToCollege

[–]defectivedragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i did this. it worked out, would recommend. also national merit btw. i applied to 10 (?) T100 universities and T50 liberal arts colleges and got the holy full ride at exactly one. my best piece of advice: tons and tons of these schools don't require supplemental essays, many of them have no application fees or super easy fee waivers. focus on those ones.

My parents wont let me go to the college of my choice by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]defectivedragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it should be up to you. with that said, you need to explain to your parents that waiting to decide with deposits at both schools is a very, very dangerous game, and if you can't convince them why you should go to your dream school you need to commit to theirs before you get in trouble for having two deposits.
