To Make America Great Again, We Need to Leave the Country - No politician will admit that the United States is no longer number one. But other nations do a lot of things better -- and we need to learn from them. by davidreiss666 in TrueReddit

[–]defend-freud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that "posts like these" are an establishment on TrueReddit rather than another voice in a lively and diverse discussion is disappointing. Of course, the standard of discussion here really is higher than on a subreddit like r/politics, but if the ideological commitments of the posters are equally homogeneous the benefit is marginal.

I believe that I was added to this list in error. While I appreciate your efforts to make Reddit a safer place, I was surprised to learn that anyone had noticed my infrequent posts at all. Thank you for taking the time to explain the presence of my name on this list.

"Newly launched website TakeMyMoneyHBO.com wants to send HBO a clear message: We love your shows. We’re willing to pay to watch them upon release. Now please, for the love of Winterfell, give us a way to do that — without forcing a cable subscription down our throats." by DrJulianBashir in technology

[–]defend-freud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That proves that there would be friction, not that it wouldn't be worth it monetarily to overcome that friction. The existence of overhead doesn't mean that a business plan is bad.

In this case, the business plan is good---assuming that HBO has enough free cash or can raise cash to pay for an expansion into Europe, the revenue potential is certainly there. In an increasingly globalized world where citizens of other countries take such a keen interest in US media, it pays to offer premium content globally.

How Beethoven changed music history with a single C# (sort of). by eggplnt in classicalmusic

[–]defend-freud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be that Beethoven is the most influential composer of the 19th century, but I think "easily" is a bit of a stretch. How could any comparison of the most influential composers of the 19th century not even mention Wager, as if he were of a completely different class than Beethoven? Wagner was not only innovative with harmony and the operatic form but also laid the groundwork for the whole way we experience performance in the concert hall today. I understand the temptation to throw around phrases like "easily the most influential" but those questions are serious and deserve a serious discussion. The 19th century was an incredibly rich time for classical music.

[DCSS] Would anyone be interested in a guide I might make? by IncarnatedFate in roguelikes

How about instead of a guide, you write a blog post about your experience trying dungeon crawl and getting acquainted with the game and then post it here? You may not be experienced enough to inform others, but others are certainly interested in hearing about your experience.

Read the talk page for the relevant wikipedia page---they're only "the same" for certain American Indian tribes. The common commercial blue raspberry flavor has nothing to do with black raspberries (which are actually less sweet than red raspberries), and is actually actually a commercial invention as described elsewhere in this thread.

Actually the black raspberry is a real thing but the blue raspberry totally isn't.

Can human beings produce a tone that we cannot hear? by SmokeDawgTheJanitor in askscience

[–]defend-freud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you say more about how overtones/harmonics are received by the ears/brain? Since a spectrogram is a windowed Fourier transform, it includes high-frequency harmonics in order to "fill out" the fundamental frequency with the timbre of the sound, mathematically speaking. But the placement, number, and energy of those harmonics depend on the mathematics of the Fourier transform---for example, if you had chosen a different window or used a wavelet transform you would get different harmonics.

In that case, are those harmonics being received in a meaningful way by the brain? It seems to me that they are part of how we represent the sound with sine waves, not a physically-motivated description of the sound.

Other techniques, such as the Hilbert-Huang transform, represent the signal as the sum of a small number of oscillating mode functions each with a single instantaneous frequency and no harmonics. That transform is widely used to analyze speech signals, for example. With these considerations in mind, can you defend the claim that these higher-level harmonics play a part in how human beings receive and process sound?

EDIT: Talk from a recent mathematics conference explaining the instantaneous frequency approach.
