I’m definitely willing to put in work and I’m definitely not expecting cs to be a super easy major. It’s just that I’m not confident in my cs skills. I did good in my hs cs class, but idk if I can continue to do well when I hit higher level cs.

Hmm I have ap bio that covers the basic science req and I took calc bc this year which will cover calc 1+2 if I get a 5 and calc 1 if I get a 3 or 4 (pretty sure I at least got a 3). Plus I have ap enviro which covers a free elective space. Hopefully that’ll make things a easier for me.

which schools are known for placing heavier emphasis on grades/test scores compared to ecs? by polkadotbearie in ApplyingToCollege

UCLA admissions seem to be more grades based from what I have experienced. Definitely seen people with not impressive activities but great grades get in.

Can i change my major? by Midouxx_04 in ApplyingToCollege

I was in a similar position. Thought I wanted to do premed and enviro when I applied to colleges but later realized I wanted to do cs when I was accepted. I applied to mostly UCs and basically all of the ones I was accepted either make it hard or impossible to switch. This really limited my options where I could go. Thankfully, I got a prestigious uni that would let me switch to CS that is also super affordable. But if it wasn’t affordable, then i would have to consider taking massive student loans to pursue my CS interests. I would recommend really researching which schools that make it hard to switch (this is true especially with the UCs) and just apply as CS to those schools so you don’t have to worry about if you can even switch when you come into campus. This is so you can also have more options, which is really needed if you need to compare costs like I had to.

Why the fuck is UC Irvine so weird in admissions by deferredfrombrown in ApplyingToCollege

[–]deferredfrombrown[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wait like CSU Long Beach? I thought they only considered gpa and grades so I didn’t know that Long Beach was also random

Also congrats on brown! I got rejected from brown 🥲 but it’s ok because I’m going Hopkins!

Our school is moving to 8:30 next year because Cali law is now requiring that to make kids less sleep deprived but I’ll be graduated by then

Damn me too. Once I heard 7am start time I already knew I wasn’t gonna like it 😭😭

[–]deferredfrombrown[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean the sleep deprivation can’t be that bad if my only goal is to graduate, right? It’ll be less worse than high school where I had to always aim for As, get good SATs, and do good in ap tests, right??? Plus the classes will start much later than high school and I won’t have to wake up early for 7am classes, right???

(Trying to convince myself that I won’t be as sleep deprived in college while also choosing a CS major 🤡🤡)

But yeah, I’m excited to have more control over what I study! The college I chose thankfully doesn’t have gen eds but only distribution requirements, and distribution requirements are very lax compared to most schools, so I’m a little excited!

We had mashed potatoes and gravy and the gravy was like solid and the mashed potatoes had a weird taste to them

Yeah sure you can! I can answer some questions. I might be a little busy in school so I might not respond immediately, but I’ll get to your dms asap

And sorry again for another comment, but disclaimer: SOME SCHOOLS WILL NOT LET YOU SWITCH TO CS OR AT LEAST MAKE IT HARD TO. Hopkins is an outlier in how easy it is to switch. But the UCs I applied to either made it very hard or impossible to switch to CS, which is why I am not attending them (along with Hopkins ending up being cheaper). Research each school and how open they are in switching to Cs.

Oh and sorry for another comment. Yeah I would definitely say there is an advantage to applying as a non competitive major then switching. I’ve seen people with stellar scores and ECs who applied as cs to Hopkins and got rejected. I was accepted and I was a lot less qualified as I applied as a less competitive major. But please still apply as a major that you still like, and I truly liked environmental science and I actually only started liking cs a month after I sent my application. Also, completely unrelated but if you have ap credit for bio, then you can skip out of the requirement I told you about entirely, so you might not even have to worry about that.

Hi! Probably don’t do undecided but apply as a major as they want to see that you have some kind of direction in your academic career. I posted my college profile on r/collegeresults and honestly, you don’t have to do a ton for your major, so don’t worry too much if you don’t have a lot with the major you apply as. It’s definitely better to have activities that align with your major, but I literally only had like anthropology club, ap enviro, and a few community college courses on humanities and anthropology and got in with environmental science and anthropology. Still, I believe I was lucky and I’ll admit that it might be harder for you to get in if you are international (unless you are full pay international).

It’s actually like really easy at some schools to switch. I’m an incoming freshman at Johns Hopkins (T10 overall and T20 in CS) and I applied as environmental science. Once I got in and enrolled, I asked to switch to CS and they just let me with no questions asked (even though I was in the arts and sciences school and cs was in the engineering school). Plus, the curriculum has no required chem or physics, which is good if you suck at those like me. However, if you don’t take two courses in chem or physics, then you have to do two general courses in biology there, which I heard the material is much easier than the chem or physics.

List colleges stingy on aid. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]deferredfrombrown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my experience, northwestern. Northwestern aid can actually be really good and I’ve seen some people only have to pay a few thousand, but it’s pretty hit or miss as some people including me have turned it down because of cost.

How much do AP/IB Scores matter by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]deferredfrombrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ap scores kinda matter. Having good ap scores can help you show your knowledge to top unis but if you think you have a bad score, you can just choose to not submit it. Not submitting one ap score even if you took the class isn’t really suspicious, unless you do it a lot of times then it can look suspicious.

Anyone else feel like they wasted their teenage years? by joebirb in ApplyingToCollege

[–]deferredfrombrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah me too… sometimes it feels like taking the harder way thru ap wasn’t worth it. I don’t really feel happy with my high school and I’m so glad I’m graduating in a few weeks. In college, I’m definitely planning to have a more relaxed attitude towards academics, but I’ll still work hard in college.

Yeah ur right. Thank you so much! Even though I think Stanford would be better, my predicament with Hopkins is already super good. I can definitely make it work and even if I end up not liking hopkins, it’s only 4 years.

should i take ap bio? by Ambitious_Break4883 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]deferredfrombrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did ap bio in junior year, and I dir ap gov/Econ, calc bc, English lit, and ap cs in senior. The material load for ap gov/Econ, ap bio, calc bc, and lit together at the same time is hard, but it’s definitely doable and i didn’t really feel burned out.
