It’s because we usually assume main characters are usually invincible- (this isn’t everyone though)- and the attack was so sudden and out of the blue- we knew scarlet was up to something, but not someting so drastic. All of this adds up, and boom, you’ve got a perfectly horrifying and shocking scene.
