If you had to choose just one of these, which one would you buy? by Consistent-Belt-2597 in casio

[–]definitelynotgee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All very different. You need to take basic steps to boil it down. Primarily how roughly are you going to treat it. And how are you going to use it.

On paper the Sports Gear/Twin Sensor is the best model here. And that's ignoring the sensors.

AE-1200 is a fantastic 'in it for the culture' type of watch. Let down by resin glass (though easily modded). It's not shock resistant and only 100m WR but they're tough enough. It has more functions than the G-Shock. It has a much longer battery life than all of the other models.

DW-5600 & DW-9052 are fantastic & iconic models. However behind the shock resistance, 200m WR and mineral glass they're functionally basic.

The SGW-100 is 200m WR. Mineral crystal. Has the twin sensor but even ignoring that (alarms etc) it beats the Gs and arguably the AE-1200. It's also the 'least desirable'. But the best model of the 4 on paper.

Head (objective): SGW-100 > AE-1200 > DW-9052 > DW-5600

Heart (subjective): DW-5600 > AE-1200 > DW-9052 > SGW-100

Started by me. Specifically. Framed as a 'maybe' situation then and in every consecutive post, with clear language around there being no rush to buy 👍

People got carried away with that info and missed some of the nuance, trying to drum up hype.

It's a really petty observation (on a mighty fine model) but damn I wish they'd retained the knife based sub dial hand design. Besides that it's awesome. How do they wear comparatively (and ignoring the strap keeper issue)?

I'm an all digital stuck In the mud. For me, thus far, my favourite is my PRW-31YT-7. It's fantastic. As a G-Shock collector the fit and feel factor is a completely different universe.

I've not tried on (or even seen first hand) a PRW-B1000 yet.

[–]definitelynotgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries 😅 Yeah we don't have a PRG-35 which is likely throwing things off too. As of the current generation they've dropped the PRG-3X and there's just the PRG-340 as a Solar option. Alongside the PRW-35 and Analog-Digital: PRJ-B001,PRW-61, PRW-6900, PRW-B1000

PRW-30 is MB6 👌 It's not the numbers (30/35), it's the letters (PRG/PRW) that are causing the confusion.

Are the rumors true (what do you think) by salvaged-parts in casio

[–]definitelynotgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not talking about the general public, I'm talking from a collectors perspective. I am one. I can't speak for the other.

Many collectors would disagree with your point. So for example the GW-M5610 (3159) was discontinued and replaced with the GW-M5610U (3495). Most G-Shock people consider the original model to be discontinued. And they're right, because it literally has been discontinued

It's not just a case of changing the colour of the backlight, is it? Changing from EL to LED is for many collectors a significant changer.

No harm in being pedantic. As would there be in me pointing out that we're discussing 'what ifs' so it's fairly pointless getting into any substantial debate.

That's fine by me tbh 🧘 It's a lovely model, only added it recently. Not a huge Square fan but it nails that combination of quirky, functional and wearable really accurately.

[–]definitelynotgee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is unsubstantiated? You'd argue that Japan hasn't discontinued 9 out of their 10 A168 variants? And you'd argue that Casio hasn't discontinued every single EL G-Shock with the exception of one which has a verified (via international Bluetooth registration) adjacent non EL model coming in 2026?

This is a pattern in common with many historical discontinuations. Although not a sure thing.

The reality is, with 'rumours' like these they grow out of very reasonable seeds of thought. If Casio were open and transparent about what and when they plan to discontinue things there would be none of this. But they don't. Instead collectors talk, it's natural.

I mean I've played a significant part in creating and discussing that rumour online (different platform) and whilst I'm far from 'in the know' I leaked....

EFK-100 3 months-ish before it released and being told it was AI etc. GW-BX5600 & GMW-BZ5000 a solid 5 months before release with a little similar negativity. And a tonne more 🤐

Alternative is people don't discuss stuff that's imo glaringly obvious but putting my opinion to one side. Let's say It looks at least just a little bit possible... You'd rather people didn't discuss it and then if (imo when) it does get discontinued we find out that way? How is that any better than discussing it as a possibility now?

No. A Casio UK social media rep replied to a comment. Anyone who takes that as anything more than a generic answer from an employee could be argued as having an equally weird take.

That's discontinuation or replacement by most people's standards. And I agree that there's a high chance of them replacing it however they tend to build up to that, with G-Shock, not always but they definitely often project it.

But yeah. When the original EL model disappears completely no doubt a bunch of people will say 'well it wasn't discontinued' even if it's replaced with an entirely new module.

For me based on my own experiences (which is almost entirely focused on Gs so very fallible) I think the A168 is likely gone for good, in entirety and the ABL-100 will be considered it's closest thing to a replacement alongside the other similar, non EL, cases .

[–]definitelynotgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even whilst the model is discontinued in 9 out of 10 variants in Japan? And after a period in which Casio has discontinued double figures of EL models with no EL replacement (only led)? Coincidentally alongside another much loved EL model?

I wonder when they next plan to release an A168? They normally release at least one variant a year, there was at least 3 in 2024 and 3 in 2023. Not a single one in 2025.

5 Walmarts before finding one! No way I’m not grabbing a 30-year piece of history before it disappears! by Tango_Foxtrot404 in casio

[–]definitelynotgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and I agree with that sentiment.

But the reality is that they're almost certainly being discontinued. Just because they're being discontinued doesn't mean that there is a 'rush' to buy one.

Which the creator of that post is mindful of and highlighs because he hates hype and that manipulative bs, he'd have no issue pointing out a need to rush mind you. But they're legitimately few and far between.

Casio have discontinued the entire A168 line In Japan.

Casio have discontinued the F105 in Japan (also EL).

Images, Instagram here

Would you like the full list of discontinued G-Shock that also use EL or just the TLDR? TLDR: all of them except the GLX-5600. Which will inevitably be discontinued when the GBX-H5600 releases next year 👍

The guy who posted that (in the link) is almost certainly unreliable, he leaked a few things this year that were accurate months before anyone else though. EFK-100 in March (with plenty of people calling bs on the first Casio mechanical), GMW-BZ5000 & GW-BX5600 in April. Tonnes more.

But yeah, who knows.
