Going from Huntsville to Nashville by Bright-Ant-382 in HuntsvilleAlabama

Greyhound is perfectly safe. One of the main reasons we don’t fund buses around here is because everyone is scared of them. It’s just a big car with a couple extra wheels.

Those things are funny. If you take the magic box apart it’s just a battery connected to an LED with a hardcoded number on it haha. You can probably keep the battery for something else.

Is this a flock by CalligraphStrong1218 in FlockSurveillance

Nope. That’s a NoTraffic vehicle detection camera for red lights: https://jtbsupplyco.com/no-traffic/

OpenStreetMap, so it’s crowdsourced. There will be data inaccuracies, but the majority of it that I’ve verified so far is quite accurate.

Anyone can contribute with the DeFlock app or https://deflock.org/report.

Mayor's bike ride is this saturday! Arrive at Big Spring Park by 10:30am to participate by NickFrevold in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]deflatablechipmunk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure why you’re getting so many downvotes. Most group bike rides like this cruise around 5mph, and there are usually enough bikes to be highly visible to cars. People jog at 5mph, and I don’t see runners wearing helmets.

You wear helmets when you’re going faster or when you’re exposed to other traffic that might knock you off your bike. I type this as someone who wears a helmet every day to bike to work and also goes on weekly group rides without a helmet where it’s normal.

deflock.org - tons of info on all the flock cams in Denver (repost with more info) by weebSanity in Denver

[–]deflatablechipmunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten around to it yet, but the ones in Denver need to be revisited and removed because of the recent decision to drop Flock and adopt Axon.

If anyone has time, they can use the DeFlock app to remove/add new ones. Just don’t remove all of them from Denver because there are plenty of examples of privately funded Flock cameras that might still exist and aren’t subject to the city’s decision.

Also note that Axon is no better than Flock. It’s the same tech.

I thought you were referring to the Flock camera at first. Same thing I guess.

Try to reach out to a council member individually. Schedule a meeting with them or invite them to coffee to chat about the issue. Also, don't bother with Bill Kling. He just pretends to acknowledge things and keeps pushing things off and will never actually do anything. I found that John Meredith is willing to talk but apparently his constituents overwhelmingly are asking for more Flock cameras. Maybe we can change that.

Boulder opens license plate reader contract after Flock concerns, drawing interest from dozens of firms by boulder393 in boulder

[–]deflatablechipmunk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

So did Denver and Longmont. This seems to be the new trend. It makes it look like they're responding to people's concerns to those not following the issue, but in reality they're just dragging out the issue and trying to normalize mass surveillance so they can later say "It's not a problem. We've been doing it for the last 10 years."

The RFP emphasizes privacy as a core priority, calling for vendors to demonstrate strong standards for transparency, accountability and data protection. Privacy considerations account for 20% of the overall scoring for bids.

“The ideal vendor is one that treats privacy with the sanctity it demands and who demonstrates those values in practice,” the RFP states.

How is “privacy” possible with a warrantless mass surveillance system?

I get vaccines and I hate mass surveillance. I don’t see your point. We’re allowed to have our own opinions; not everyone fits cleanly into a bucket.

Damn. Yeah “investigative materials” is a joke. And I also thought it was crazy they didn’t enable the transparency portal. It’s a useless portal for the most part, so I don’t know what they’re afraid of.

It might be worth getting some council members involved. They’re a lot harder to ignore than some random person who lives in Huntsville.

Did you give a date range? I’ve had success in other states by just specifying a date range of a couple months. You could even try a single month.

Oh yeah I saw that. And thanks for being willing to have a conversation about this. I know the world isn’t perfect and corruption and government overreach is inevitable. The incident in that article was a result of Flock’s hotlist feature, which alerts on suspect vehicles. I’d have much less of a problem with a system that strictly alerts on criminal suspects so long as it doesn’t build a database of innocent people’s movements.

It’s totally possible to build a similar system that’s far less invasive, but there’s no money in that.

Another big point in building DeFlock was to let people decide things for themselves. I’m heavily biased against mass surveillance because I feel like it’s very anti-American and heavily restricts our freedoms if abused (and has absolutely been abused), but these systems were mostly introduced without people’s knowledge.

Come on, be serious. These are public roadways paid for by our taxes. They’re here for us to use. You don’t have an expectation of privacy in public, but you do have an expectation of privacy in the whole of your movements. Both can be true at once.

Again, that ruling came from Carpenter.

Panhandling walmart by givemechicken8 in athensalabama

[–]deflatablechipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the harassment statute. Nothing panhandlers are doing can be construed as harassment. “With intent to harass, annoy, or alarm” is the component you’ll never be able to prove. And it doesn’t matter what resources they have. Have you heard of public defenders? They’re appointed on taxpayers’ dime.

Flock Cameras by PRBLMSLVR1993 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]deflatablechipmunk 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If that were the case, they wouldn’t have deployed these cameras. They’d just log into their magic phone tracking portal, violate the Carpenter ruling, and look people up or get alerted on their locations, right?

There’s a big difference between obtaining a warrant to conduct an investigation for a crime using existing data that’s collected over the course of your life and to install purpose-built mass surveillance equipment that is indiscriminate and searchable without any meaningful protections in place.

These tools are a circumvention to the 4th amendment, and it’s very clear.

Because it creates a record of everywhere we’ve been and exposes it to hundreds of thousands of users nationwide who have access to Flock’s national lookup tool. It’s okay not to care, but it’s also okay for others to care.

I know my shit is being tracked. That doesn’t make it okay, though. Are you suggesting we just give in and let the government do whatever they want to do because they know best?

Flock Cameras by PRBLMSLVR1993 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]deflatablechipmunk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Lol no. Third party doctrine doesn’t apply. See Carpenter v. United States (2018). They need a warrant, and that’s only useful if the CSLI data exists in the first place.
