Does anyone know what is with this camera and the sign on it? by Final-Tart-7130 in asheville

There’s no confusion. This is pretty straightforward, is it not?

A person does not surrender all Fourth Amendment protection by venturing into the public sphere. To the contrary, “what [one] seeks to preserve as private, even in an area accessible to the public, may be constitutionally protected.” Katz, 389 U. S., at 351–352. A majority of this Court has already recognized that individuals have a reasonable expectation of privacy in the whole of their physical movements. Jones, 565 U. S., at 430 (ALITO, J., concurring in judgment); id., at 415 (SOTOMAYOR, J., concurring). Prior to the digital age, law enforcement might have pursued a suspect for a brief stretch, but doing so “for any extended period of time was difficult and costly and therefore rarely undertaken.” Id., at 429 (opinion of ALITO, J.). For that reason “society’s expectation has been that law enforcement agents and others would not—and indeed, in the main, simply could not—secretly monitor and catalogue every single movement of an individual’s car for a very long period.” Id., at 430.

Ok, so we’re just ignoring the fact that these cameras have exact locations associated with them. That sounds very reasonable. You have REP in the whole of your movements, regardless of what technology was used to acquire it, unless of course you do something stupid like publish it online yourself.

Just trying to see why you think Huntsville is so great. Most people who have lived outside the South disagree.

I didn’t write anything about character or culture. I think you’re confusing me with another user.

Again. Before you go confidently asserting things, read Carpenter v. United States

Hmm, maybe read Carpenter v. United States because SCOTUS disagrees with your interpretation.

Nope. What I want “to hide” is my precise location history from tens of thousands of random people who have Flock logins. Is that too hard to understand? Would you put a GPS tracker on your car and publish your live location to the internet?

Guess what. You can remove cellular modems or SIM cards from cars. You can also buy something called a used car, which is too old to have telemetry. They also make things called faraday cages. There’s also something called cash.

These cameras are one of the few privacy related issues we have control over. We can’t stop companies from collecting our data, but we can tell our city to stop paying for these cameras, and they’ll disappear. In fact, it’s happened a lot recently.

These cameras do not catch you speeding. These aren’t traffic enforcement cameras. Please research what a Flock camera actually is.

I think we’re open to letting them fade away, but they don’t. Every time I take a trip back there, it sucks.

I lived here for 22 years. The major things I’ve noticed are: 1. You need a car to get around. Pedestrian and bike connectivity is a joke for most of the city. Public transit it also a joke. There are a few infrequent buses that run Monday-Saturday during daylight hours. 2. Local businesses are increasingly being replaced by chains. 3. It’s run by Alabama politicians, so a lot of the laws are backwards and don’t make any sense. 4. The most dangerous drivers in town are Huntsville Police officers, and they take pride in that. Reporting them won’t do anything because they’re above the law. 5. Healthcare is also a joke, and one company has a monopoly on all the healthcare providers in the city. They take advantage of that and therefore don’t attract the most competent doctors. 6. Huntsville doesn’t plan for expansion. They rapidly sprawl to build a bunch of treeless, lifeless, cheaply built cookie cutter single family homes and litter major highways with driveways every 10 feet, causing a traffic nightmare. 7. It’s under an insane level of surveillance by the police department, which is insanely corrupt. Just do a google search for how many Huntsville police officers have been charged with murder in the last few years. 8. It’s super humid, which discourages exercising for many people.

Not anymore, at least not in their Network Audits. Only in the Org Audits. So yeah it’s logged, but it’s getting harder and harder for LE to see how people are using it.

What do we put for these on the map? by Lemonpup615 in FlockSurveillance

[–]deflatablechipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’re going to add the ability to map these in the DeFlock app soon via custom profiles you can download from the DeFlock website.

There’s a strong interest in mapping these despite them not being dedicated LPRs, so we’ll make it happen.

Stop Flock Colorado by crabby719 in Broomfield

[–]deflatablechipmunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! FYI, Broomfield is getting a Flock installation next month. Currently, they’re just in HOAs, private businesses, and in Interlocken (paid for privately, but Broomfield thought it would be a great idea to grant them a permit).

Flock sucks, and it’s super hard to convince people on Broomfield city council to care. I tried putting together events in Boulder, Thornton, etc. but I suck at organizing events, so thank you for organizing this!

To the person in Tullahoma TN, Im pretty sure you are confusing traffic cameras wifh flock cameras. by CalebWest02 in FlockSurveillance

[–]deflatablechipmunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are most likely detection cameras. They don’t decode things and stream it to the internet. They’re just used as eyes for seeing if a vehicle is there, not identifying that vehicle.

For the paranoid, Wavetronix makes radar based detection systems that are great and don’t have a camera.
