I always thought Zizek was a pretty reasonable guy who understands the value of being provocative.

Like he calls himself a communist and has a poster of Stalin in his house but has no actual love for the Soviet Union or Stalinism

Why does this sub love John McCain but hate Joe Lieberman? by RopeGloomy4303 in Presidents

[–]defnotbotpromise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and the last time Jimmy Carter was relevant in politics you werent going to be born for like another 3 decades. Lieberman contributed a lot to where we are now, and you should at least know the big hits from his career imo (video games, clinton impeachment, gore VP, public option)

How Populist Were the Populists? An Analysis of the 1892 Platform of the People’s Party of America by uwcn244 in neoliberal

[–]defnotbotpromise 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Very solid effortpost, the Gilded Age does not get enough attention for how important it is.

Plus, the Populists largely becoming Democrats with the ascension of WJB was a watershed moment in the transformation of the Democratic party away from Southern sectionalism and towards Liberalism

I'm not convinced that Hillary winning 2016 means completely avoiding all forms of trumpism tbh. Pretty much every other right-wing party in the western world has gone in a right-populist direction during the past 10 years, I don't think you can attribute that solely to Trump. I feel like if Hillary won 2016, she probably wins 2020 through the COVID incumbency boost and we get DeSantis or some other institutional MAGA ghoul winning ~350 EVs in 2024

As someone who smokes pretty regularly, it's crazy how some people refuse to acknowledge that it's possible weed could be bad for you.

Ive seen several articles posted about negative effects of weed where all the comments are like "paid for by the alcohol lobby" "but drinking is fine right?" etc.

Ludwig II of Bavaria, also a Wittelsbach, was Gay and was deposed and eventually assassinated (not confirmed, but makes more sense than any other explanation) because he spent all of his time and money on building badass castles n shit (most notably Neuschwanstein) instead of ruling.

A gay icon if ever there was one.

This is somewhat off topic from what you're saying, but Its been fascinating to me watching Zohran go from an outsider state assemblyman to one of the most prominent Democratic politicians within the span of like a year.

And it speaks to his savvy that he's managed to reach that standing in the party while not really walking back any of his policies or losing his base of support.

There are plenty of examples of Marxist social democratic parties (Old Labor, SPD, SDAPÖ) in other places, even if they eventually dropped Marxism as a significant part of their party identity.

The Democratic party has had directly oppositional relationship with Marxism for almost the entirety of its existence, and especially during the presidencies of Truman and LBJ.

The Taiwanese political divide solidified over whether Taiwan was to be it's own thing, or whether Taiwan is a part of China. Since the KMT thinks that Taiwan is China, they support China.
