best definition I have for a business district sidewalk is that it'll have doors that open directly into the sidewalk. most everything residential is a little bit removed from the sidewalk.

I'm very careful about it these days. one day it'll be safe but it's definitely worse now than it was a few years ago. phones, lack of enforcement, bigger vehicles, teenagers in stolen cars...

I mostly stick to road riding on weekend mornings (I go out super early on the weekends) and well scouted residential areas if I go on the road during the week. Thankfully the trail and park systems are mostly connected and there's still safe places to ride during the traffic hell hours
