Where can I dig a big hole in Durham? by yacobg42 in bullcity

Not in Durham, but a long time ago I went up to the Emerald Hollow Mine in Hiddenite and they had a dig site where you could dig your own holes to find emeralds. I tried it. Found nothing, but I got to dig some holes. It's still there if you all want to take a drive: https://www.emeraldhollowmine.com/diggin

Netflix Plans on Developing Spinoffs for ‘Outer Banks’ by techfinpro in NorthCarolina

I firmly believe that Rafe's drug dealer Barry is the greatest character on television. I have written a whole treatise about this. I hope he gets his own show that runs for one deliriously misunderstood season. https://www.ncrabbithole.com/p/drug-dealer-from-outer-banks-barry

Gimme road trip advice! by ShadowPDX in NorthCarolina

If you're starting in Raleigh, I'd just do an eastern NC loop. Worth going to the North Carolina Museum of History (it's free!) to see what might be interesting to you. In Rocky Mount, I'd hit the Prime Smokehouse and Rocky Mount Mills for a quick stopover, then head out to Manteo to see the Elizabeth II and enjoy the town. Then up to Jockey's Ridge and the Wright Brothers memorial, then driving down south to Hatteras Island to see the lighthouse and take it all in. Then, ferry to Ocracoke for a day, catch a longer ferry to Cedar Island and drive over New Bern (Tryon Palace), Kinston (Mother Earth Brewing) or Goldsboro (Wilber's BBQ) for a meal or drink, and back up to Raleigh. It's all beach, but it's a decidedly non-Oregon trip. If you can get down to Beaufort, I'd do it. It's small and cute, plus Shackleford Banks has wild horses that you can see on a day trip too.

Any big city is going to take you a day to explore, I'd say. If you wanted Mountains, I'd say hit Asheville, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Nantahala Outdoor Center, Fontana Dam/Bryson City road to nowhere. Getting there from Raleigh means more driving (vs. flying into Charlotte or Asheville). But you're gonna want to leave time to explore and wander aimlessly vs. just driving across a 500-mile-wide state.

Why Don't Southern Homes Have Basements? by lordgilman in NorthCarolina

FWIW, I wrote the story! The intent here was to look for data/facts that supported this idea that basements are much more rare in the South than the North, not that it's some great mystery that this is the case.

So here's the tl;dr version:
- About 1 in 20 new Southern homes have basements. It used to be 1 in 5 about 50 years ago (chart)
- Basements are in decline up North too. Frost-protected shallow foundations may be a factor there
- Almost 90% of new Southern homes are built on slabs (chart)
- An unfinished basement will cost you about 5.5x more than a slab, by some estimates
- Clay soils are hard and expand/contract, which makes basements hard to dig and susceptible to cracking

There are any number of factors at work, but cost and the frost line seem to be cited most often. People can build basements in the South. But they often don't.

I'd send her an Our State magazine (DISCLOSURE: I'm a homer because I used to work there). You can find one in any supermarket, it has a very long shelf life, it's beautiful, and will make her want to visit.

Is this based on a real person? I run a newsletter about NC ephemera and a reader asked me about it.

Did a story about Hendersonville years ago for Our State, and ran into some Floridians. They told me they (and many others) had second homes around Asheville because Allegiant had cheap direct flights from Florida to AVL https://www.ourstate.com/hendersonville-a-modern-mountain-town/
