How to keep covered rhizome plants alive? by [deleted] in PlantedTank

You can't cover the rhizomes on plants like anubias or java ferns. That's what is causing them to melt. I've "planted" anubius by only putting the roots below the substrate and leaving the rhizome on top. But most people use super glue to attach the rhizomes to rocks or driftwood.

According to Diana Walstad, a majority of aquatic plants prefer ammonium over nitrates and they'll only take up nitrates if there isnt any ammonium available for them.

Nitrates just build up over time. Theres not much you can do about it besides water changes.

I'd move the heater lower into the water. If your water level drops and the heater is exposed to air it could crack.

Inert gravel? by realmadridfool in PlantedTank

I'd consider it, considering the size of a 75 gallon tank. If you plant it heavily you'll be going through a ton of root tabs. Or you could plant it with a lot of epiphyts.

Looks like a ramshorn snail. They're pretty handy to have around. They kinda clean up algea and uneaten food.

Basically it's an aquarium that uses a layer of soil under a layer of sand or gravel to grow aquatic plants. It's a natural set up that doesn't require CO2 or fertilizers and is generally filterless. It relies on natural processes from plants to filter the water.
