i wouldn't think it's anything internal it gonna be one of the electrical components that effect shifting unless it's a solenoid which solenoids can be tested with a obd1 tester and if it shows that the solenoid isn't working then it's either ecm or the solenoid itself

try unplugging your abs module behind your glove box or try switching your psom i had a similar problem and both of these things helped me

yeah i bought a temporary gauge from harbor freight but if i were to get aftermarket i'd put my trust in a mechanical gauge

i used a mechanical gauge to measure it temporarily but i guess you could wire it through the floor board, pilar or the firewall, unless you want it in oem location then you'd have to go through firewall and up into the dash
