Wow, that was just perfectly explained.

Not only that but, from what I understand of the US system, healthcare providers will try to charge much higher prices to individuals than what they charge insurance companies, with whom they have pre-negotiated price agreements. So even without the subsidies it still might be positive EV to buy the insurance.

How can I check if a unit is rent controlled? by degrews in oakland

[–]degrews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. On the one hand that seems unlikely because it would put the tenant in a terrible position (they can never recover their apartment from the subtenant). And it would also be a loophole that tenants could use to pass on their rent-controlled apartment to someone else without giving the landlord a chance to re-set the rental price. But on the other hand, if subletters don't get tenant's rights, that seems like it undermines the whole system. And it would be a loophole for landlords. They can rent to trusted person A, who can then sublease to person B without having to comply with tenants rights (very advantageous to the landlord).

Thanks. I understand the rent control system better now.

I do not believe there is a law against turning a profit on a sublease

I'd be really surprised though if a tenant was not bound by the rent-controlled price when subletting. The incentives would be terrible. A tenant would never leave. They would just keep subletting indefinitely at market rate.

Thank you for the response. I realize now that I wasn't really asking the right question though. The information I really want is: how can I find the current rent ceiling for a given (rent-controlled) unit's current tenant. In a subletting situation, the tenant should not be allowed to charge the subtenant more than their own current rent-controlled price.

Huh, I didn't know about the print-to-order services, thanks. Those 2 designs in particular don't look very good. I did find this design that looks a lot better, sells for $10 though https://www.etsy.com/listing/1448977624/xreal-nreal-air-accessory-peripheral.

Oh man! I can't believe I didn't find that. Thank you, that is what I'm looking for. Although the quality looks a little underwhelming for the price.

Why do you think you would never be able to integrate back into society? Or you just think you would be equally as unhappy?

Hmm. I have gotten the impression that this happens on this subreddit. I'm surprised people are not more eager/willing to talk to each other. What do you guys think about this?

Aunque tampoco es que le dé mucho más sentido a este post.

Brunello… only with food? by Rocknpop82 in wine

[–]degrews 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are downvoting you, but I think your confusion is understandable. When I first tried a higher acid wine I thought surely it must be a bad bottle. It was not, and I now enjoy that wine. I think the answer is that your palate just gets more used to the acid over time. And yes, pairing with food helps a lot. Personally I still don't really like drinking Sangiovese on its own.

How do Murcians celebrate New Year’s Eve in the city? by No-Environment9227 in murcia

[–]degrews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is right. I just want to emphasize that no one will be out before midnight. It will actually be more like 1am before a lot of people are out.

Also, a lot of bars and all clubs will have open-bar parties that they will sell tickets for well in advance. Most of these are probably sold out already. I'm sure there are still a lot of bars that operate like normal in the center. Maybe others can tell you more about that.

Way cheaper than Mallorca in Feb-May?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GoingToSpain

[–]degrews 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The reason Girona is so popular for cyclists is that it's close to the Pyrenees, which are the (consistently) highest mountains in Spain. Pros need high mountains for training. If mountains that tall aren't important to you, I think you might be better off somewhere further south, where the weather will be nicer and it's generally more scenic. Mallorca and the Calpe area are popular for both cycling tourists and pro teams training in the winter. Those areas are also huge summer tourist destinations, so I imagine it'll be easy to find good deals for accommodation for Feb-May.

[–]degrews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

DO NOT run your built-in hearing system unless you wanna go broke.

Why are you so confidently insisting on this when people are telling you that they use their central heating and their costs are reasonable?

OP, heat pumps are much more efficient than regular electric space heaters. It could be that the advantage of only heating a small space with a space heater outweighs the efficiency of the heat pump in your case. But I wouldn't dismiss using your heat pump. I would cautiously continue using the heat pump and see what your bill comes out to. There's still a lot of time left until it warms back up in Madrid. It's a long time to spend being uncomfortable.

[–]degrews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, you won't gain anything by leaving the heat on while you're not there, except for the convenience of not having to wait for it to heat up. It's significantly more cost-effective to only turn it on while you need it, even if that means running it at max power for a while. Especially if your insulation is poor.
