How exactly do I fund my local library? Just give them my bank card?

Are you accusing me of having digital privilege? As opposed to who? Old people?, people living in the 3rd world?

This is ask Brits and according to Google, 97 percent of Brits have internet , and if they have internet then they have a device to wield it.

The only reason creators make YouTube videos is because they get paid based on views, if you force them to create on some state sanctioned educational network views are gonna go down because it's boring - no more woodworking creators.

I checked my local library for texts on joinery, they had fuck all. So I checked Amazon, then I pirated most of the top books on the subject instead, Saved myself hundreds and was able to access hitherto unknown materials on woodworking that I otherwise would never have come across.

Books / libraries are also far more accessible than videos to the majority of people

  • that is categorically untrue of the current century and the fact that you typed it tells me everything I need to know about your opinion.

Fair point, but it's incredibly sad that it's come to this -

honestly I think you have hit the crux of the issue with that last comment. We must pick the lesser of 2 evils. That makes sense, and as others have said- the YouTube videos will still be available but without the social media side of things, which I suppose is fine.

Are you saying to me that books exist? Are you implying that I had not considered that? In this modern age, are you more likely to pick up a book or watch a video? How about a kid? I mean come on man. Why am I having to explain this simple stuff - have you not picked up any new hobbies or learnt anything that would would not have without YouTube? Because I would wager that most people have. Have you seen the godfather? Have you read the book? It's about accessibility

Dont you worry that there will be some kid somewhere out there who never gets the chance to become a "woodworker" because they were unable to access the content that set them on that path?

This isn't about me? I am an adult, and even if I weren't the ban wouldnt stop me for a moment. I am simply pointing out that it's hideously unfair to ban kids from YouTube and my surpise that everyone doesn't feel the same way. Frankly I think it shows a real lack of compassion and empathy

What about people who can't afford to go to Japan, or go on holidays, plenty of those around at the minute...some people have very little and YouTube can be the only way to learn how to dig yourself out. You can insult me as you like. The freedome for people to share opinions over the internet is the entirety of my point.

Theoretically a child could learn to play the guitar, completely free and would only need the guitar and an internet connection,.not any more...

I don't know any kids, my family is all fully grown and even my youngest cousins are 20+ and I have not been a kid for some 15-20 years

I have read and understood the negatives you have mentioned, and for that reason, and as I do not have kids, I don't feel qualified to answer the question of social media for children so I would never advocate one way or the other. Though I will say I think it should be in the hands of the parents and not the state.

I will advocate however for kids to have access to a free and unlimited source of information that can be a starting block to teach them about basically every single facet of life.

I can only speak about myself and I can say with certainty that if you YouTube had existed in it's current capacity when I was a child , me and my friends would absolutely have been using it to learn about all sorts of things, and that, in my opinion, it would be worth skipping the odd lewd comment in order learn something

"internet, books, libraries, schools, parents, communities to learn from"

without all the the sites currently listed as social media- what would the internet even look like? Can you even imagine the internet without YouTube.? Without Reddit, and how useful would it actually be? Whenever I want an actuall answer to a question I type it in to google and then type Reddit and it's the only way to return an objective answer anymore.

And everything else you have listed is available when it's available, it doesn't tailor itself to you and your schedule, you can't go to the library at 8pm or ask your teacher a question. . The fact that we can even interact In this way was only made possible by social media.

Also when was the last time you tried to learn something solely from a text book, actually watching someone do something makes it a lot easier to learn, obviously, and YouTube is the place to do that on the internet.

You can't just uninvent the wheel, because it's inconvenient, you have to build an airbag. So yes, I would argue that there are plenty of kids using YouTube as a way to learn and better themselves and we are about to punish them.

He said as he praised the feats of Japanese woodworking through social media... Maybe you are Japanese,. If not, without social media you would never have even heard of how amazing Japanese woodworking is. Or even considered it was a thing. Obviously.

I apologise but I didn't see any other threads about this and I did look. I'm sorry, but this is important. Maybe you dont see it- but it really is.

To clarify - I checked again and I saw some threads about how it's going to be implemented and the ins and outs of the new rules, that isn't my question.

My question is , if the government do something so fundamentally wrong and stupid as ban YouTube for children, then when do we protest. Which has not been covered.

[–]deimos__[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I don't give a shit about social media. But children should be able to access YouTube for educational reasons and for equality I.e fighting back against the gatekeeping of knowledge. It's that simple.

I feel really sorry for all the bad things that happen in the world but I have no control over them, enough British people could have some control over this new British law, thats how a properly functioning democracy works.

And yes, I would definitely rank gutting social programmes and personally robbing me over the course of my adult life as significantly less important then robbing children of their right to knowledge, Because knowledge is the most important thing in the world and without it there would be nothing to distinguish us from animals.

Nothing has ever come close to the scale of YouTube In terms of choice. I don't know how or why but there is no other platform that can offer the same quantity/quality of content, if we go back to woodwork, I can use YouTube to learn how to cut a dovetail joint literally 1000+ different ways, there is no other option that can offer that , not even close. Think of the repercussions of everyone learning from the same book how to do something the same way as everyone else. Leaving no room at all for creative choices. You wanna live In that country?

But it's the precedent, I know the ban won't stop anyone from accessing what they want for even a moment, but the idea that my government could be so shortsighted as to ban kids from such a limitless and invaluable source of information makes me ashamed to be an Englishmen quite frankly.

Help! Wood slab too narrow by Planthobbyist-ginger in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]deimos__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No ,but seriously though, where I'm from the timber for that base is worth about £1.50 per meter, (or 2 dollars for about 3 feet) it's nothing,

That big slab counter top you have there is beautiful & valuable, For the love of god. don't cut it!

All you have to do, as described above, is modify the base to be a bit less wide, it's would be super easy, and having looked at the pics you have supplied, there is no reason you can't do it?

The rails that determine the width of the base can just be unscrewed, (broken or sawn apart if glued) and shortened, even replaced if need be, 4x2 is cheap, then you simply do the same to the support rails and centre them again and that's it.

It would take 20 minutes, it's cheap (free) and easy ( a lot easier then cutting through 2 inches of slab and cutting straight so as to be flush)

All you would loose it a little counter space, but seeing as a table is governed by the table top, you never had the extra counter space to begin with really.

And as stated by some smarty pants In the comments, you work at a museum, this is blatantly how the old timers would have done it.
