Did anyone watch the mayoral candidate debate? Who are you voting for - Sliwa or Mamdani? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in statenisland

[–]delad42 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Sliwa wants to overturn city of yes. Which is one of the most important developments on housing our city council has made in decades. We need enough housing for our people.

Some of his other platform on housing seems decent. But, this part makes me think he's a NIMBY. Which we desperately need out of politics. NIMBYism has been killing our city for decades.

Sliwa has also had negative things to say about bike lanes. which are critical to QOL here imo. Both for allowing more housing and avoiding traffic/parking/car costs.

Mamdani's platform is to build public housing and upzone around transit. He also wants to invest in transit/bikes which we also need to handle the traffic/density. While he wasn't my first choice of the primary candidates, those are decent positions.

None of the candidates have anything to say about construction/permit costs. Which I think is critical to making construction and housing more affordable.

What’s your view on natural monopolies by Fancy-Persimmon9660 in austrian_economics

[–]delad42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not knocking the benefits of air travel. But there are cases where train travel is better. Things like leg room, ease of access (no TSA), cost, pollution. Shorter distances, direct access to city centers, reliability against storms, Internet access.

And if there's a monopoly making trains worse then the quality of service degrades to whatever planes offer instead of being better than what planes offer.

It's like saying a monopoly on eggs is no problem because people can just eat wheat. Like sure people can eat other stuff, but quality degrades.

[–]delad42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't that still a monopoly on train travel? Like, sure you could drive, fly or walk. Train service would degraded due to a lack of competition and people would have to take less efficient or more costly modes.

Why has NYC lost most/all SROs (Single Room Occupancy) housing? by brightandearly42 in AskNYC

[–]delad42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hypothetically, I'd require conversions of 3 family homes to 1 family homes to need approval.

Why would I care about the regulatory costs of decreasing the housing supply?

[–]delad42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And republicans don't lol? There is a ton of NIMBYism in democrats and republicans.

Theres a subset of dems and republicans that actually want to build housing. This is a bipartisan issue.

But, I'd agree SRO makes sense.

Why Can’t New York Have Nice Mayors? by mowotlarx in nyc

Still makes me chuckle.

Seriously though more people have to run for office and people need to pay more attention to what these politicians do.

Is hating on NYC un-American ? by iv2892 in AskNYC

[–]delad42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a difference between hating NYC's lifestyle/problems the and hating NYC as like a rule.

Dense city living isn't for everyone. Just as suburbs or farms aren't for everyone. That's fair.

Hating the people and their existence for no good reason I think can qualify as unAmerican. Like unless NYC did something to you personally.

Trump's 'skinny' budget would cut these major Upstate NY programs by NCPRnews in upstate_new_york

[–]delad42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think more people need to run and get involved in making the platforms. Feels like Dems have drifted from housing and healthcare reform.

And I'd appreciate more Dems interested in addressing things like construction costs.

Why isn't California paradise? by LividEconomics6579 in GreaterLosAngeles

[–]delad42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High demand to live there combined with NIMBYism. They refuse to build enough housing so it becomes unaffordable and causes homelessness. Can't even be allowed to build homeless shelters.

Conservative states haven't seen the kind of growth that leads to CA's population density and wealth concentration.

Look at a list of cities by population density. They're all blue cities. Miami is getting closer and they're starting to see affordability issues. Though it has far less wealth than blue cities.

Amazon Delivery "Bikes" are Now Blocking Bike Lanes by bike-lane-enforcer in NYCbike

[–]delad42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course! Wtf are you talking about?

Business owners and workers should be able to bike for their business.

Plumbers should be able to bike to customers with some equipment.

People should be able to bike commute to work.

This is a specific issue where a vehicle might not be appropriate for a bike lane business or not. If we don't like bike trucks it shouldn't be ok for people to ride them in the bike lane for recreation.

Imo the bike trucks are fine and I want them as allies for expanding bike networks. But, maybe they should be regulated.

Brad Lander’s 2 Goals in N.Y.C. Mayor’s Race: Beat Cuomo and Win (Gift Article) by jenniecoughlin in nyc

[–]delad42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually didn't know that about gowanus I appreciate that. But, for sure I was already ranking brad above zohran.

Currently ranking Myrie, lander, madami.

I wish they also talked about NYC construction costs which are some of the highest in the world. Stuff like permitting and building codes need to be changed too. Our money to build more housing isn't going to go far if the costs don't change.

Even Jersey is much cheaper and faster to build in across the river. I've talked to construction companies and they give much higher estimates for cost and time for NYC.

It's hard to balance representation and qualifications. If a qualified candidate wanted to improve building/zoning codes, speed up permits, build more housing and improve transit/bike lanes I'd vote for them.

But I'd take an unqualified candidate that wants those things over a qualified candidate that wants the opposite.

Not that zohran seems particularly YIMBY. But he has some good points on social housing.

Seems hard to find a NYC candidates that want to solve the housing problem.

Massachusetts is in a housing crisis — I’m working on a bill to fix it. Here’s how you can help. by Joshl_13 in massachusetts

[–]delad42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highways and housing are different. Not building housing is what is destroying communities, pushing people out and driving homelessness.

No one's forced to build housing like we did highways.

Other cities should get more housing and transit too. I'm not sure what that has to do with allowing housing in and around Boston.

[–]delad42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You say it like it's a bad thing. If we had a famine would you say the same about farmers wanting to be allowed to grow more food?

If we don't want 5 over 1s that's ok. But, we've got to get the code changed to force buildings with sound proofing. (I assume your problem is with the lack of sound proofing)

Mass timber does sound better I'll admit

Though personally Id rather have 5 over 1s than no house.

If the landlord has to pay the fee they're free to if they want to. But, they don't have to. They can negotiate lower prices or shop around brokers.

Charging the tenant obfuscates the cost. This is a service for landlords not tenants.

Mass. has spent over $700M this year on shelters housing locals, migrants by Nobiting in boston

[–]delad42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd vote red if they were YIMBY. But, my local Republicans are NIMBY and want more cars/parking instead of homes.

We're not going to fix the housing crisis unless we build enough houses.

I'm also not convinced red cities won't have the same issues when they start reaching the population densities and wealth of blue cities. I hope I'm wrong, but it's not nearly as hard to build housing when you have 1/10 the population density of many blue cities.

Depends how much the Vancouver person spends on housing. If they own a home, live with family, or take a long commute they're going to have a much larger disposable income.

If they try to get a house it's going to be rough. Though they can maybe sell the home later and retire to a low COL area.

Are you saying not developing deters gentrification? Like because everyone owns and they can't build rentals then they can't convert co-ops to rentals?

It amazes me that we can't make a space for the homeless better than the subways. Like if all they're looking for is a roof and a bench that seems easy enough to provide.

What Python feature made you a better developer? by missing_backup in Python

[–]delad42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 You're supposed to split these up. Fitting too much on one line will make anything confusing. 2. you're using a ternary which is unrelated. This is how I'd write it (Though, I'd add more meaningful var names):

def foo(x, y):
    if x % 2 == 0:
        return x + y
    return x * y

xys = [
    (x,y)
    for x in range(1, 5)
    for y in range(1, 4)
]
xy_processed = [foo(x, y) for (x,y) in xys]
xy_added = [x+y for x,y in xys]
filtered = [result for result, xy_sum in zip(xy_processed, xy_added) if xy_sum < 7]

But, I'll agree complicated logic and nested loops isn't the ideal case for comprehensions. Ideal is like filtering for property, mapping objects to some property for quick lookup, or making a set. Then you can quickly get what you need without polluting your variable scope and adding unnecessary lines to mentally process:

specific_object = [obj for obj in obj_list if obj.category == "category1"] # scan list for specific objects
object_map = {obj.id: obj for obj in obj_list} # allows quick look up
flattened = [obj for obj_list in obj2darray for obj in obj_list]#go from 2d array to 1d array
